Sundial information in the World Wide Web
Sundial information in the World Wide Web (WWW) --- A lot of information about sundials is already available in the WWW. A starting point for this may be http://aibn55.astro.uni-bonn.de:8000/~pbrosche/hist_astr/ha_items_instrum.html , a document among the History of Astronomy WWW pages http://aibn55.astro.uni-bonn.de:8000/~pbrosche/astoria.html . Additions to this document are very appreciated but should be limited to historical sundials. Wolfgang R. Dick Secretary of the Working Group for the History of Astronomy in the Astronomische Gesellschaft <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Appendix: The World Wide Web The World Wide Web (WWW) is the universe of network-accessible information, an embodiment of human knowledge. It is an initiative started at CERN, now with many participants, and is growing exponentially. The WWW has a body of software, and a set of protocols and conventions. It uses hypertext and multimedia techniques to make the web easy for anyone to roam, browse, and contribute to. Each highlighted phrase (in color or underlined) is a hyperlink to another document or information resource somewhere on the Internet. The access to the WWW is available for everyone at prices comparable to that of a telephone connection. To learn how to get access one may just go to the next bookshop and buy one of the numerous books available.

Hello, A huge sundial was made in september 1988 in the Mont Saint Michel in France using the well known monument as a gnomon. With a dimension of 1.1 km it was probably one of the largest ones but it only lasted less than one month. For further information please read the issue of L'Astronomie, march 1989, vol. 103 (in french). Another one was made on the Place de la Concorde in Paris but it was never finished, the obelisk was acting as the gnomon and a few hour lines are still visible on the ground. new book: sundials in and around Bologna
MERIDIANE E OROLOGI SOLARI DI BOLOGNA E PROVINCIA - by Giovanni Paltrinieri and Italo Frizzoni Paltrinieri, an enthusiastic dialist, and Frizzoni, a photographer have compiled a catalog of the sundials in Bologna and environs in northern Italy. More than 500 sites are described in detail with a photo of the sundial or the building. The catalog part is headed by an introduction into the measurement of time and gnomonics. After that the reader finds the places with sundials sorted alphabetically. Each sundial is classified in five categories namely orientation, shadow caster, time shown, counting of the hours and existence (whether the sundial still exists or not). Descriptions and inscriptions are given in plain text. In the medium there are photos of sundials in color. Unfortunately the used paper is not suitable very well for color prints. But this is compensated by the following parts in which interesting meridian sundials are described in detail. Conclusion: A very noble book which was done with many lovely details. I'm sure, every dialist wants to own this book when he takes a look at it. Although it is written in Italian language it might be valuable for those who don't understand this language. If one want's to order the book he can send an Eurocheque for 120 000 Italian Lire to Paltrinieri (shipping included). When ordering from outside of Europe please contact him first.
