[freenet-support] Route not found - stability next generation routing

2004-03-20 Thread Ulrich Koepping
Hello [EMAIL PROTECTED],

first of all I want to thank the developers of freenet
and freenet related tools for their work. It is a
needed tool these days.

However, I have been using freenet for some time -
also before next generation routing started. My
general experience is that the performance has gone
worse:

1) After starting a new node version or not having it
online for a while the node sometimes fails to
establish a stable freenet connection. I fix this by
deleting all rouing files (*_a und *_b in the freenet
directoy) and downloading a new seednodes.ref file.
However, this does not always work on the first
attempt.
2) Even after having the node up for a wile and(!)
successfully downloading content, the node more often
fails to route the request to other nodes than before
NG-routing. Wihtout NG routing I was able to have
request returned with 25 HTL with a "data not found"
error - a clear indication that the data was not there
for sure. With NG routing I am having trouble to get a
data-not found message at all, most of the errors I
only get "route not found" with 1 or 2 nodes or even 0
being contacted.

Now to my questions:
a) is there a way to make my freenet node try to
contact NEW nodes more often? For example by more
aggressivle cleaning up the routing table?
b) How can I tweak routing that my node (AFTER
successfully receiving data!) does no longer think, it
does no know where to deliver the requests to?
c) Why does my node deliver "route not found" errors
with onlny a few (<< 5) other nodes it tried to
contact? How can I make it contact more nodes? (> 20)
d) Do nodes tell each other about the nodes they know?

e) is it easy to get involved in the freenet
development?

Since I am a software engeneer my own I have the
impression that the ideas behind NG routing are
reasonable, but the algorithm itself is not stable,
yet. Esp in the special case of starting a node or
having one that it not permanently online. I came to
that conclusion because I have been reading the
support-archive and was surprised, that some people
even with NG-routing seem to have good performance (as
I experienced it without NG routing).

Thanks for any answers!

Uli

[freenet-support] My freenet installation experiences

2004-03-20 Thread Bill Polly
I have been trying unsuccessfully for five days now to
get freenet working. My machine is a 256MB celeron,
Windows ME, and a 56K dialup modem (OK, I'm not
wealthy). Freenet installed OK at first, but I
couldn't get much past the YoYo page before it bogged
down. "The Freedom Engine" wouldn't load at all. All I
get after that is repeated "Network is busy",
"couldn't connect to the network", or "data not found"
errors, in about equal proportion. I created the
user.js file in Mozilla's profile directory as
directed (I'm on Mozilla 1.6, and couldn't find any
equivalent profile option). Freenet version is 5076.

When I tried the freenet configure option, It would
seem to work initially, but anytime after the first
time, I would repeatedly get "error in freenet,
freenet will now close" and it did. After
reinstalling, now all I get is "a required DLL file
MFC71.DLL was not found".

I read that for modem connections it should be set up
as a transient node. Without the configurator, the
only way I could see to do that is to manually edit
default.ini and freenet.ini and change transient to
'true' and delete the comment character. Soon I
sdiscovered that freenet resets this periodically, so
I question whether I really have it set. When I did
get the configuration option working (at first
install), you have to go to the geek page to enable
setting transient on the main page, but it was still
greyed
out, so I couldn't set it that way.

I have spent days trying to get anything at all out of
freenet with no success (OK, I got to the YoYo page
once, but haven't been able to since).

Is this experience typical? From the archives it seems
like lots of people are having similar experiences. I
would like to get it working, but it seems completely
unuseable. I'm wondering if the network is full of
mis-configured machines like modem-based windows boxes
with transient set to false.

When I try to get a DBR Freesite (like DFI) I always get a RNF, I tried
a lot of them from the History of my Browser.

[freenet-support] 60016 - no upstream bandwidth usage??

2004-03-20 Thread Rudolf Krist
Hello,
2.5 hours ago I updated my node to the build 60016, and started it. Till
now it has NO upload traffic (~300 bytes/sec). Normally my node is
running ~10 Hours a day, since ~5 months. The node normally needs to
reach my upload bandwidth limit (13 KB/s) within ~10 minutes after it
was started.

some stats:
