[freenet-support] VPN

2015-03-27 Thread John Verney
Hello all,
Simple question -
Is it safe and secure to run freenet through a VPN? I use one of the major VPN
services.
Thanks___

Hello,
I'd say it is even more secure.

It should be fine to use a vpn, though I have not tried it. I wonder what the
downsides would be? A little extra latency shouldn’t matter. If you leave it
on all the time maybe bandwidth costs?

Hello,
I didn't give any data about the vpn, but I'm using one with freenet
(with everything,

only from time to time changing my location), and it works perfectly.
of course, depending on what vpn, the bandwidth may be smaller,
I for my part am using proxpn, that has an unlimited bandwidth, no speed
limit,
one can also choose the port(s), including for mails (in and out) and
adsl phone,

on about a dozen places (Seattle, NY, Singapoor, Amsterdam, Sweden…)
It costs me about 6.5 $ per month.

Re: [freenet-support] VPN

2015-03-27 Thread Bert Massop
Whether "a little extra latency" matters depends on how much this extra
latency really is. Considering a request in Freenet may require >10
nodes to be traversed, latency adds up quickly, reducing already low
network capacity for everyone.
I don't expect much impact from a tiny extra bit of latency, e.g. if you
live in Paris and your VPN provider were located in Amsterdam. Paris ->
Singapore however would probably a bad idea and is definitely not
something I would recommend for Freenet.

A properly configured VPN connection transparently connects your
computer to the public internet through an ISP that does not actually
provide a cable into your home. That's all to it.
In general, Freenet should work both functionally and securely over such
a connection. The only downsides would be the (already mentioned)
additional delay, as well as introducing yet another party that is able
to monitor your internet traffic under a jurisdiction that does not
necessarily have to be equal to yours.

Here, "properly configured" means that at least the following criteria
will have to be fulfilled (I may be missing some though):
- Your machine should ideally be able to reliably determine its external IP
- Your external IP should be relatively stable
- Incoming UDP packets on the relevant ports must not be blocked, i.e.
ports must be forwarded wherever necessary
- Your average ping stays well below ~700 ms (but lower is definitely
preferable!)

In case your VPN connection comes with a dedicated IP, all security
caveats for computers connecting to the internet directly (i.e. not
behind a NAT router) may of course apply.

I assume you tech support for freeness? I have a problem that maybe you can
help with, running a Mac OSX 10.10.2 confirmed install of Java 40 , when
attempting to open freenet a message appears can not connect to server
127.0.0.1 Any suggestions? Thanks

Well, this is exactly doing the same to me, for quite a few months,
saying it'll stop someday if no java update is made… just waiting to see
if maybe it's a misreadding of freenet, since being also on Yosemite,
Apple makes automatically the java updates and I've got the latest :

Sounds like you have multiple versions of Java installed, and Freenet is
not configured to use the latest.

In wrapper.conf in the directory Freenet is installed to, is
"wrapper.java.command" set to java? If you run java -version in a
terminal does it give version 1.6?

What happens if you change it to /Library/Internet
Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java - does that file
exist, and if so does the warning go away?
