[freenet-support] We need your help!

2005-05-30 Thread Matthew Toseland
As of today, we are down to ONE daily updated DBR index freesite - that
being The Freedom Engine. Its author's dedication is greatly appreciated
- but this is one hell of a single point of failure, and we need more
than one index site and one flog by the same person on the Web Interface
page.

Please could somebody run an index freesite? You will need:
- To maintain strict anonymity. Freenet, mixmaster/cypherpunk remailers
(Content of Evil uses hushmail, which arguably only provides nominal
anonymity), and possibly I2P or Tor could be useful. You should not
(as the author of the index) be on real time communication channels
regularly due to the danger from time-correlation attacks.
- You can use the spider to generate the index. This is the easiest way.
The freesite HUH has source code and everything needed to get it
  working.
- We would strongly prefer that an index be a DBR.

Legally, if you can be traced, then it is likely that you can be
compelled to not link to illegal sites. You might argue that you are a
common carrier, if you link to _everything_ and the process is entirely
automated - but this is probably still pretty shaky.

Morally, in my opinion, not representing the project for this paragraph,
you can run a freesite that does not link to (for example) dolphin porn,
as long as there are other uncensored sites, as long as you make your
policy explicit, and you cannot be compelled to not link to interesting
illegal stuff (Diebold, Co$ etc) unless they can find you. :)

Speaking for the project, my view is that any comprehensive or mostly
comprehensive index site will be linked from the Web Interface. Although
this will be subject to Ian's approval. Personally I would prefer an
index which is categorized and excludes child (and animal) porn, but
this is just my opinion and **I will not exclude any useful index site
from the web interface on this basis**. Ian might prefer that all
indexes be completely automated, but unfortunately it is necessary to
have some manual input to avoid flooding, spam and so on..

It is most unfortunate that we have to provide a list of index sites
centrally, really. The darknet portion of Freenet 0.7 will include the
bookmarks in the distribution servlet, so we don't need to provide any..
But the open network will probably always have to have published indexes,
since most users will download freenet from freenetproject.org after a
slashdotting rather than being introduced to it properly by a friend.

2002-10-31 Thread Ian Clarke
Unfortunately - due to Scott Miller's ISP being crap, emails from hawk
are being blocked by an increasing number of mail-servers because
technically hawk is on a dynamic IP address (although in-practice it is
static).

Does anyone have a reliable SMTP relay that they could allow hawk to
relay mail through? You will need to allow relay from
hawk.freenetproject.org (4.46.23.40).
