Re: [freenet-support] connecting

2015-11-20 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hi Brian,

Does this happen when you try to start Freenet manually (via terminal) or
is it simply failing to start when you reboot your Mac?

Would you be willing to come in to the Freenet IRC channel[1] briefly so I
can help you figure out what's going on?

[freenet-support] connecting

2015-11-20 Thread Brian
Hello,
I have downloaded and connected to freenet a couple of times already, but
for some reason it stops working after a short period of time. It starts
off working pretty good, actually, but quite quickly stops. I have left my
computer on with freenet running 24/7, but yesterday it just stopped
working again. So I decided I would restart my modem, router and
computer. I left everything off overnight and rebooted every thing in
sequence. And it is the same as the last time. I am not able to restart
freenet. When I attempt to open the web interface "Safari can't connect to
the server". Of course, I haven't started freenet. The last time, I
uninstalled freenet and basically stated over. New web of trust,
everything. But once again, freenet just stopped working. I am using an
older Mac, v. 1011.1, iMac (20-inch, Mid 2007), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4
GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I have only used the Safari browser for freenet and
I haven't used Safari for any other reason. I have tried changing
different settings, after reading some of the articles on freenet. I'm
just not sure what I need to do to make this work. I am ready to sign up
for a monthly donation, probably only $5 or $10 per month, but I can't
justify donating if I can't make it work. I hope you can help.
Thank you,
Brian

The terminal output you mention is the same as that when starting
Freenet successfully. Do I understand correctly that Freenet is running
and you can open http://127.0.0.1: in a web browser and interact
with Freenet? Were you able to complete the first run setup / wizard in
the browser? I wonder if there are any details about why it stops
running - can you tell us what is in the file wrapper.log in the
directory Freenet is installed to?

[freenet-support] Connecting to Freenet

2014-02-18 Thread Nicholas Kovich
I am running Mac OS X Mavericks. I cannot get Freenet to run by clicking the
freenet.jar file, so I am opening Freenet within the terminal via the command
"./run.sh start". It works, the jar file opens and Freenet connects for about
30 seconds until it shuts down. I cannot keep Freenet running for more than a
minute. It just times out. The following is what Terminal says:

Macintosh:~ nicholaskovich$ cd /Applications/Freenet
Macintosh:Freenet nicholaskovich$ ./run.sh start
Latest JVM is /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
Starting Freenet 0.7...
Macintosh:Freenet nicholaskovich$

I would greatly appreciate any help!

I really think you've got the wrong Freenet here ...

This mailing list is for http://freenetproject.org/ : a censorship resistant
peer to peer network:

==

What is Freenet?

Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the
Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is
entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are
anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and
without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.

Communications by Freenet nodes are encrypted and are "routed-through" other
nodes to make it extremely difficult to determine who is requesting the
information and what its content is.

Users contribute to the network by giving bandwidth and a portion of their
hard drive (called the "data store") for storing files. Unlike other
peer-to-peer file sharing networks, Freenet does not let the user control
what is stored in the data store. Instead, files are kept or deleted
depending on how popular they are, with the least popular being discarded to
make way for newer or more popular content. Files in the data store are
encrypted to reduce the likelihood of prosecution by persons wishing to
censor Freenet content.

The network can be used in a number of different ways and isn't restricted to
just sharing files like other peer-to-peer networks. It acts more like an
Internet within an Internet. For example Freenet can be used for:

* Publishing websites or 'freesites'
* Communicating via message boards
* Content distribution
* Sending email messages

Unlike many cutting edge projects, Freenet long ago escaped the science lab,
it has been downloaded by over 2 million users since the project started, and
it is used for the distribution of censored information all over the world
including countries such as China and the Middle East. Ideas and concepts
pioneered in Freenet have had a significant impact in the academic world. Our
2000 paper "Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and
Retrieval System" was the most cited computer science paper of 2000 according
to Citeseer, and Freenet has also inspired papers in the worlds of law and
philosophy. Ian Clarke, Freenet's creator and project coordinator, was
selected as one of the top 100 innovators of 2003 by MIT's Technology Review
magazine.

it's a route that's not found, it will say something like "tried to

It's been up for about 17 hours. That should be long enough to get one
of the gateway pages right? Or even just the GPL? None of those work.
I'm pretty sure that I've set up port forwarding right because it does

The request couldn't even make it off of your node. Try again, perhaps
with the GPL to help your node learn about others. The publicly
available seed nodes have been very busy lately. If possible try to get
a friend to give you a reference to their node instead.

What should I do? Thanks,

Re: [freenet-support] connecting to freenet?

2004-09-15 Thread Toad
Okay, here's the deal at present:

If you don't port forward, bidi connections means that you may still be
able to become a useful member of the network by serving requests for
nodes that you opened connections to. However, you may not, in practice,
as Newsbyte's node is an example of (have you tried reseeding, Newsbyte?
Could you perhaps reinstall, then send me the routing table and open
connections pages twice daily for a few days? Probably the Environment
page would help too).

If you DO port forward, then your node's IP address will be detected
automatically and everything should just work.

Automatic port forwarding is possible for some routers via UP&P but has
not yet been implemented.

Your situation is not unique, and there are some possible reasons mentionned

[freenet-support] Connecting to Freenet ?

2004-06-03 Thread Michael R. Stork
Hi there
I'm trying to set up a Freenet node, and I'm not having any luck at all.
I've followed all the instructions for opening up ports on my router,
and I've reseeded several times now.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP1 with all the latest updates, the latest build
(5084) of Freenet, and my router is a D-Link DI-604. Within the router
I've opened the following ports; 64028 (the listen port listed in the
freenet INI file), 8481, & . I opened the last two just to be on the
safe side, since it wasn't working anyway. I'm connected to the net, and
I'm able to get other P2P software to work; Limewire, Kazaa, Shareazaa,
so I'm not sure why your software won't get through.

Anyway, hope that you can help

Windows freenet client? Are you talking about FUQID?

> client so that it only goes to the linux freenet server.

If you tell the client to talk to that server it will talk to that
server only :) More on that below.

>E.g. a freenet proxy server if you will.

Hmmm.. I don't really understand that statement.. The freenet
server/node is a freenet server/node and the machine running FIW or
Frost or FUQID or whatever is a client to that server/node...

> Would anyone have any idea how to configure either or both
> serers to that end.

The freenet server/node has to be told to accept FCP connections from
the client machine. Check the 'fcpHosts' param in the config file, it
accepts both host addresses (e.g. 127.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1 etc) and
network addresses (192.168.1.0/24 etc).

Then the client application (FUQID or whatever) needs to be told to talk
to the freenet server. Check the documentation for the application for
information on how to do this.

[freenet-support] Connecting to a non-transient freenet server in a dmz from a dhcp freenet client behind the firewall

2004-04-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,

I have a linux server that I want to run freenet on as a non-transient server hanging
off a dsl line. I'd like to use the windows freenet client on a dhcp client as a
transient client so that it only goes to the linux freenet server. E.g. a freenet
proxy server if you will.

Would anyone have any idea how to configure either or both serers to that end.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks
