qt extended - no ring
Hi, Today I flashed qt extended 4.4.2 to my FreeRunner. It seems very nice, but there are two problems, one minor, one more major: 1. it doesn't make any noise when a call or message comes in. It vibrates, but it doesn't ring. If I answer the call, it works fine - I can hear the caller etc, it's just the ring / message tone which doesn't seem to be playing. 2. It doesn't seem to mark sms messages as 'read' - when a new message arrives it says 6 messages have arrived, not 1. The only way around this seems to be deleting the messages as I read them, which I'd rather not do. Any suggestions? ONLY an idea, no factual knowledge :) but: Perhaps the charging circuitry is flipped off when the battery reaches 100% reported charge level, and then the phone is running off of battery, causing the slow discharge you see? When you unplug and replug, since the battery is below 100%, the charging circuit is turned back on till battery level once again reaches 100%? Think this is the explanation? Have you tried unplugging the phone when it hits 100% batt charge, and leaving it unplugged, and seeing if it maintains the same rate of discharge? Are you in a good signal coverage area, or does the phone have to 'shout' to talk with the tower (presuming your GSM is on)? When I'm in low-signal areas, the battery discharges faster. Been that way for my Nokia (past) and Motorola (present) phones too. What about other chipsets - Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi? Are they powered off, or are they on? Might be contributing to battery drain... HTH Ed. Ed, Yes, this sounds like the correct explanation - it stops charging once it hits 100%. When I have it unplugged, it SEEMS to discharge faster, but this may be due to usage [i.e, when it's plugged in, the screen is turned off most of the time ( I use the 'dim only, don't lock' option), as I tend to do everything via ssh. When it's unplugged it tends to either be in use or in my pocket (where the screen tends to get bumped and therefore powers back on briefly). I'll do some more testing by unplugging it and putting it on the desk while i'm not using it, and report back ] I'm in a good coverage area, and usually have full bars or close to it. I usually have GPS, bluetooth, and wifi turned on, although sometimes I turn them off to conserve battery life when I'm not going to be near a charger for a while. It used to just stay at 100% when left plugged in, so I'm guessing that one of the updates (probably the kernel? possibly around the time we started using the 'aux' led to indicate charging) has changed this. cheers, -Dale ___ support mailing list support@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/support

Re: Battery discharging while plugged in
Which charger are you using? USB cable connected to computer, not the charger. Is the phone on and unsuspended the whole time you're charging? yes, using 2007.2's dim only, don't lock option, so most of the time the screen is turned off, but the phone is not suspended. I don't use suspend. Some chargers only work at 100mA which will charge you when the phone is off or suspended (slowly) but it will gradually discharge if you have the phone drawing operational power. erm, i don't know how to tell for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's getting 500mA from the PC - it will charge to 100% in a few hours (not the 12 hours needed at 100mA). it's plugged directly into a USB port, not a USB hub or anything like that. Host is running fedora, not sure how to determine how much power the it's drawing, but 'lsusb -v' gives me (among much other info): bmAttributes 0xc0 Self Powered MaxPower 500mA the way I'm plugging it in hasn't changed since It used to charge to 100% and stay there. Re: Freerunner issues
1. Disabling standby sounds like a good (but temporary) solution. BTW, how long does the battery last in such cases? This is something I've been trying to figure out. It's highly dependant on how many times the screen gets touched (and thus turns itself on for a few seconds) in your pocket, which will depend on how much you move around and how secure it is in your pocket. In my experience and from my estimates, I would say you should get 3-4 hours, though I have personally had it disconnected from power for about 5.5 hours in this fashion (for most of that time it was in my jacket pocket hung over a chair, thus not moving very much at all - fewer screen touches). Your mileage *will* vary. On this note, I'd love to come up with a way to disable the screen powering back up until I push one of the buttons or something, to stop the screen from turning on everytime I hit a bump on my motorbike. Another solution would be some kind of flip down screen protector like on my ipaq, which prevents the screen from being touched by keys / inside of pocket / etc: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/ppct-ipaq6900-preview-large-01.jpg 2. Also, is there a way to disable or enable 'ringtone'? I need the phone in silent mode most of the times during the day (so, right now the standby kind of helps :) ). I don't believe so via the gui, but you could probably achieve this through the use of the alsa states. i.e: to create a silent state: 1. run alsamixer, and fiddle until you've muted the ringer volume 2. alsactl -f ~/silent.state store then to put the phone in silent mode, use: alsactl -f ~/silent.state restore to put it back into normal nonsilent mode: alsactl -f /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/stereoout.state restore Not so important one: I hope to load the 2008.8 into the sd-card and have a dual boot configuration. Let me know if this is not possible, take a look at: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Moving_current_system_from_flash_to_SD I haven't tried it yet though... This solution is interesting: http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-August/025388.html will give it a try, thanks! I hope it works with the official freerunner distro, i.e. 2007.2 also. Yeah, I have this page bookmarked for me to try playing around with when I have time, I'd be interested to know how it turns out. 5. Also, is there a wiki page or something where 'how tos' for tweaking of settings are mentioned? Like the standby idle-time, silent-mode, screen brightness, etc? there are lots of wiki pages with lots of little tidbits scattered through them... ;) finding them seems to be a whole other matter, the search isn't great by all accounts. 6. I have installed media player, debug tool, gps, calc, calendar, ... The phone's become slower - boot time is higher and application (eg. dialer) loading takes a lot of time. Is this normal? It sure was faster before I updated/installed those. I haven't seen this, and I have a similar raft of apps installed, except I've not seen any debug tool in the repos...? Granted, it's not the fastest thing I've ever seen, but I don't think it's much/any slower than it was when I got it.
