Subject: Pulseaudio and volume control

Greetings.

I'm using pidgin-2.5.6 and pulseaudio-0.9.15 and I'm having
difficulty setting the volume of pidgin notification sounds. I use
pavucontrol to set the playback levels for various apps / streams /
whatever. The trouble is that pidgin's sounds are too short for me to be
able to grab onto the volume slider in pavucontrol. Pavucontrol only
displays a volume slider when a sound is being played, so pidgin appears
for a very short period of time, then disappears again.

After some searching around, I found a post along the same lines
in the pulseaudio mailing list, where the response was that pidgin
should use libcanberra for notification sounds, which would result in
pidgin sounds going through the 'System Sounds' stream / whatever.
'System Sounds' are *always* visible in pavucontrol. I'm not 100%
convinced with this answer however. Personally I would prefer to see
pavucontrol display levels for apps even while they're not playing (
perhaps in another page ).

Did you suggest this to the pavucontrol authros ?

Are there any known solutions? Are there any plans to use
libcanberra as per the suggestion mentioned above? Is there any dialog
between pidgin pulseaudio communities on this issue?

Thanks :)

Dan

Why not try setting a custom sound that's longer (whatever sound file
you have handy), play it, set the volume, and then change it back?

I'm getting my story straight first. That's why I posted here. I was also
curious about whether there were plans to use libcanberra, as the
pulseaudio people claim this is the 'proper' solution. But yes, I will be
adding my voice to others who want streams to be slightly less transient in
pavucontrol.

Doh! Yes that's a pretty obvious workaround. Thanks :)

[no subject]

2009-06-15 Thread David Chmelik
Peace be with you,

Over the years I have seen a pidgin bug sometimes. Instructions for
backtracing are only for a few GNU/Linux distros and do not say where to get
debugging symbols otherwise. It seems a bug exists with the display for
default X setups, though I did export DISPLAY=0:0.0 and gdb reported a
segmentation fault. I tried debugging but it says 'no symbol tables' a lot of
times, though it does mention libgstreamer.

Following is the display bug, which has been reported again this year, but I
see no fix listed for.

$ pidgin

(pidgin:4199): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_get_name: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY
(display)' failed
Pidgin 2.5.6

** (pidgin:4199): WARNING **: cannot open display: unset

It mainly happens when I run X/KDE as root and pidgin non-root. Some people
say not to run X as root, but I have used Unix/Linux 11 years and I am not
going to: I would have to xterm login root most times, which is preposterous.
On LinuxQuestions someone said remove .Xauthority, but root always makes it. I
cannot figure out how I fixed this last time. I am not on the mailing list but
if you add a report to the bug database or want me to try anything, just write
me back here or privately to my same user name as this e-address but at gmail,
which I check more often. Maybe within a couple weeks I will also check if the
gmane group is this list.

The use of libcanberra has been discussed before and shot down. Using said
library gains us nothing that we need or want and just causes more maintenance
work for us.

Hi, How do you change a password on pidgin instant messenger? Thank you.

You must Login to the individual Chat/IM Service and make the Password
change on the specific Site. Pidgin will connect to many individual
IM/Chat Services but all administrative functions _must_ be handled
within the specific Service.

Extending Pidgin

2009-06-15 Thread evanescent
Hi All,
I am a software engineer at lsf.
I have a P2P overlay network(Dcache http://wathsalav.blogspot.com/ ) which
is a distributed web cache based on IP multicasting. Any computer in the
network can join or leave this P2P network at anytime. Now I want to publish
the presence of these nodes which are joining to P2P (This part is done with
avahi. Now I can publish the presence of nodes and can see those in pidgin).
So now when a node peer joining to overlay I can see it using pidgin as i
publish the node with avahi.

Then I want to give the chat facility to these nodes in pidgin without
creating accout in pidgin manually.

1)How can I do this? If any sources please put here.

2)In order to do this It is neccessary to customise pidgin ?

Or can this be done with no changes to pidgin source?

Thanks
