Which version of Pidgin? And what platform (I assume it's Windows, but
am not certain).

Have you applied the Windows Update Root Certificate updates that come
along from time to time? If the root cert is out of date then this is a
possible result.

Pidgin Error - Validate Certificate Error: SOLUTION

2010-11-18 Thread B Linky
To people getting the message:

The certificate for omega.msn.com could not be validated, The
  certificate chain presented is invalid.

.. trying to connect to MSN today, see the following page for the solution:

http://blog.andreineculau.com/2010/11/pidgin-and-msn-certificate-error-for-omega-contacts-msn-com/

I've no idea why noone from pidgin has thought to post to this list
about it - I had to go on their irc channel to find out, where people
were coming on all the time asking. You'd have thought they'd have
been fed up answering the same thing all the time.

No one has posted this because it involves force-feeding Pidgin a
certificate from a third party of unknown validity. It works, but
unless you understand what you're doing, you could be fed a bogus
certificate which enables man-in-the-middle attacks.

You start a chat (muc) room and all join it.

 Buddies-Join a Chat
     or
 Conversation-Join a Chat

There is a specification available for a process by which one can
upgrade a normal conversation into a muc room but it isn't particularly
well supported and has some less than well designed parts to it.

I had running Pidgin with a MSN account the entire day.
When I saw these mails I disabled the MSN account and after a few seconds
I enabled it. It connected without errors.

The I closed Pidgin and started it again. Now it gave me the same error dialog.

Using v2.7.5 on Windows XP.

ssl certificate

2010-11-18 Thread Derek Arndt
Every time I try to connect to my hotmail messaging account I receive the
following message:

Unable to validate certificate

The certificate for omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated. The
certificate chain presented is invalid.

A few google searches did not help solve the issue. This is making pidgin
unusable. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure the source of the
issue, as far as I can tell it started randomly.

Re: [2.7.3]Can't Connect to ICQ...

2010-11-18 Thread Etan Reisner
Use pidgin 2.7.5 with clientLogin and without SSL and it will/should work.

If you absolutely cannot upgrade to 2.7.5 (because you are using an Ubuntu
version for which our PPA has not yet been updated for example) I believe
changing the server for the account to one of login.icq.com or
login.icq.net (I forget which) may work with clientLogin and without SSL.

Is this Windows or Linux?

For Windows there is a FAQ entry you should read.

For linux the theme control plugin should work just fine depending
on your environment and what options are you trying to change. Things like
interface font and the like may not work in recent GNOME/etc. environments
as the environment settings will be taking priority and will need to be
changed from there.

Invalid certificate

2010-11-18 Thread Elizabeth Burton
I run 2 msn accounts thru pidgin. This afternoon I started getting

Your MSN buddy list is temporarily unavailable. Please wait and try again

And had a pop up with this

SSL Certificate error

Unable to validate certificate

The certificate for omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated. The
certificate chain presented is invalid

It causes the accounts to disconnect. Then for no reason will disconnect.
And it doesn't always effect both accounts at the same time.

However when it attempts to connect it still kicks me off of windows live so
it must be getting some where.
Server messenger.hotmail.com
port

Please help cause i hate msn.

RE: Chatting with more than one buddy

I've had several users complaining of the Pidgin window hi-jacking what
they're doing when another user IMs them - for example, someone might be
editing a Word document and the new message window pops-up and interrupts
their typing. What setting controls this?

Thank you!

A few interesting notes:

| The problem isn't on Pidgin's end – it's a misconfiguration
| of the MSN servers

and

| How to replace your certficate (the GUI method):
|
| Go to pidgin's Tools-Certificates to remove the old certificate. Don't
| close this window yet. (You can, but it is easier to not)
|
| With your browser, go to https://omega.contracts.msn.com. It will give you
| Directory Listing Denied
|
| With Firefox, if you click on the lock in the lower right corner, you
| get a dialog box, where you can click on View Certificate. On its Details
tab,
| you can export the certificate to a file.
|
| Now, back on the pidgin Tools-Certificates dialog, you can add this
| certificate, and all is well.

XMPP Visability

2010-11-18 Thread Sarah Fox
Hello. Just joined this group now.

I've d/loaded the latest version of Pidgin a few days ago (Ive used older
version before)..

1)

When i'm invisible, i can right-click on a user/person, allow them to see
me.
However, I can't do this with XMPP accounts.

(Or is there another way ?)

2) is there a way to move a person, or multiple people to a 'group' check
'presence settings' for the entire group at once ? so they can see me online ?

basically, I want to be left alone, for a few hours a night, but allow
'important' folk to see me.. - if needed.
