I am minimally computer literate and need to figure out how to get and install the plugin that will allow Google Chat to work with Pidgin. I have used Pidgin for years to communicate with my disabled wife first through Google Talk and more recently Hangouts. I really need to try to make this work rather then reinvent the wheel. How to get pidgin working on a server with no SSL cert
Hello, I'm trying to get Pidgin to work with a jabber server run by mordus angels, it's an eve online group. After I tried a few solutions offered by google, which involved manually retrieving the SSL cert via Firefox or console command, I spoke with the server admin and confirmed that the host, http://mordusangels.net/, doesn't have an SSL certificate. Since he was pretty firm about being too lazy to get an SSL certificate I'd like to know if there's a way to just ignore the certification all together? Windows Focus
Hi all, I'm having trouble with Pidgin not taking focus when a message is sent to a user. I've setup a private (intranet) Openfire server using xmpp only. Users can login and send messages to any of our locations without problem but, the messages won't take focus and are therefore hidden behind anything that is open at the receiving computer. Has anyone run into this and found a solution? Openfire is running on WAMP on Windows 2008 server (R1) and Pidgin is running on Windows 7 sp1. Windows, clean install. Hitting the cancel button while the installer is trying to download gtk or the spellchecker will continue to process the install and claim it's successful, but pidgin will then fail to launch with a gtk.dll error. This is the newest one in apt. I realize that sometimes ubuntu is slow to track newer versions, instead opting to remain stable. (This is laughable to me as I decided to try Karmic, which introduced a number of regressions to me.) In turn, this is why I bring up the issue here rather than open a bug immediately. Would it not make more sense, on an auth fail, to have the system DELETE the in-memory password (if it's not saved on disk), so you'll simply be re-prompted? Yes, I believe that would make sense. I believe the complication is that we can't necessarily tell that the problem is definitively that you typed the password wrong - there are other cases under which a "" may be received. We'll call that option feature request number one. (Delete the stored pass on an auth fail if it's not saved to disk). The AIM case above is the only one I can think of (but then, I'm not a protocol guru). I'd say the best logic might be: if I've gotten an authfail, and I'm clicking "re-enable" and get ANOTHER auth-fail (while trying the in-memory password), it's most likely that. (Feature request number 2). Would it also not make sense that if I'm editing an account that was ONLY disabled for an auth fail, that as soon as I click save, it's re-enabled without having to manually do so? That would require otherwise unnecessary accounting of the reason for disabling, so I'd be inclined to say "not worth the effort" for an exception case. If the other issue (which I consider a bug) wasn't present this would be a non-issue. Even if I had had something else wrong (say, my username), there'd still be a need for the extra trip up to the enable menu once I had saved the thing. How about an "enable account now" checkbox in the "edit" dialog box, then? Or a "save and enable" next to the save? (Number 3). Also, there's an additional bug that's I may not have made clear from the above. If, on the "edit account" button, I put a password, but do not opt to save it, I am still prompted when I enable the account. This means that the password field in the edit box means NOTHING unless you click save. Logically, to me, it would mean "save this in memory and use for sessions until I quit" but not to disk. (Bug #4) The final bug is that in the current incarnation, there are both a "modify account" and a "re-enable". I need BOTH, as things are currently set up, but the dialog disappears after I hit modify. I'm still in a "failed" state (I'm not signed in). The only reason I'd go to modify the account is if I wanted to continue using it. Can we keep that dialog box around, possibly add a little "x" or "dismiss" until I'm enabled? (Feature request #5) Is there already a bug open on this issue? I get this on two different machines, and it seems REALLY bad ui design. It is more of a bug than bad design. Feel free to file a ticket (http://d.pidgin.im/newticket), there doesn't appear to be one already. As above, it's actually four or five inter-related bugs. Would you (as someone with more voice for the developers than I) prefer one issue per, or one monolithic "this interaction all hurts my head, here's how to make it better" bug? -Dan -- "Station!" -Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey Dan Mahoney Techie, Sysadmin, WebGeek Gushi on efnet/undernet IRC ICQ: 13735144 AIM: LarpGM Site: http://www.gushi.org --- ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Authentication Failure --> Re-Enable
Hey there, I'm noticing an odd behavior with pidgin under ubuntu linux (whatever version just happens to come with Karmic via apt). In this case it's Pidgin 2.6.2 (libpurple 2.6.2) 95470d310d5d3a229c0b9fc4232da9bfeafaeb5b As we all know, and as is an FAQ, pidgin leaves your password laying around in cleartext. I currently don't have my password to the company jabber saved. Instead, I have to type it at login. I'm fine with this. As it's a good, complex password, I occasionally mistype it. I then get a note at the bottom of my buddy list: dmaho...@foo.company.com disabled Authentication failure [Modify Account][Re-Enable] Clicking re-enable simply tries the same password you've put in, again. It does not re-prompt you. Presumably the only use for the "re-enable button" is if there's something that was broken on the server but is now fixed, or if pidgin has cached a password that you're *about* to change your password to. (It's also useful with AIM as this is the error AIM hands you when you use the "disconnect all but the current connection" option). Once you're here, your only option is to "Modify" the account, and save it (still with no password). Once you do that it dismisses the alert at the bottom of your buddy list, so you must THEN go back into accounts-->accountname-->enable and put in your password. An important note here is even if you put a password in, and click save, you have to go to the accounts menu, enable, and type your password again. It seems more logical that putting in a password would save it for THAT session, but not in the config file, but this does not appear to be the case. Would it not make more sense, on an auth fail, to have the system DELETE the in-memory password (if it's not saved on disk), so you'll simply be re-prompted? Would it also not make sense that if I'm editing an account that was ONLY disabled for an auth fail, that as soon as I click save, it's re-enabled without having to manually do so? Is there already a bug open on this issue? I recently transitioned my computer from Windows to Linux, but am transitioning myself by installing my same version of Windows in a Virtual Machine. As I cannot use Pidgin because the interface is too different (just know that I am disabled, and there is significant difficulty attempting to adjust, so much so that I cannot), I am relegated to keeping my VM open and on the desktop at all times so that I can socialize. But I don't want to operate soley in Windows. The only solution is for me to acquire a copy of GAIM 1.5, or even 1.3.1 which I currently use, for Linux, preferably a .deb package. If anyone has access to the source code and can build a package or provide a copy to me so I can try to build one, or perhaps has a .deb package of GAIM 1.3.1. or 1.5; please let me know. So what you are saying is that the UI differences between pidgin and its predecessor gaim are so severe, as to be intolerable, moreso than the difference between windows, and some flavor of debian? Ouch. We really can't recommend that you use an old version though - there are some known security vulnerabilities and several of the protocols will not work. The security issues Daniel spoke of are quite real, as are the protocol issues. And running your gaim client in your VM is no more secure or any more an answer. For example, Yahoo IM changes their protocol about as often as the political regime in a third world country, and if you've been on the list for a while, we *still* get a number of people asking some question varying on "WHY MY YAHOO NO WORK". It seems that AIM and ICQ (which use TOC and OSCAR) are more stable, and if those are your preferred protocols, then you have many options, even using AOL's own java client, or Meebo. If I may soapbox only minorly, Michael, please let me state that despite whatever cognitive disability issues you may have (which I am not at all faulting), your question, as well as the information provided with it, and your logic for asking it, were more well phrased, and better worded and thought out, than most questions I've seen in the short time I've been on this mailing list. I don't envy what you're going through. Windows, in their ultimate wisdom, continues to drastically alter their UI, only as the people used to older versions and worse at adaptation continue to age. Windows and Gaim suffer a similar problem: people altered UI that a nontechnical audience was comfortable with, and I'm not sure if the need to do so was there. I would love it if every piece of software had a simple "emulate version" dropdown menu on their main screen, that just made it look like the old stuff. Windows95 to 2000 was not a large problem for my father. Going to Vista, and trying to figure out Microsoft Office with its new "ribbon bar" (which is a real pain when they're used to menus), took me several hours of UI changing so things were "where they used to be", stripping out HP "feature" software, and months of scouring ebay for older versions of things that had previously just worked. Problems with DBUS methods
Hello, I'm was messing around Pidign's DBUS interface and I have a problem with some methods (for example purpleFindBuddies - I know it is prefixed with "purple" but I hope these are the right mailinglists :-) ) For reaching all the methods I use program qdbusviewer. When I try to execute method purpleFindBuddies, I get following error dialog: Unable to find method PurpleFindBuddies on path /im/pidgin/purple/PurpleObject in interface im.pidgin.purple.PurpleInterface And in console (running pidgin --debug) appears following: (23:16:02) dbus: Need to register an object with the dbus subsystem. (If you are not a developer, please ignore this message.) (23:16:02) dbus: The signal "dbus-introspect" caused some dbus error. (If you are not a developer, please ignore this message.) Also trying to use qdbus returns some error: [prog...@notas ~]$ qdbus im.pidgin.purple.PurpleService / /im /im/pidgin /im/pidgin/purple /im/pidgin/purple/PurpleObject Cannot introspect object /im/pidgin/purple/PurpleObject at im.pidgin.purple.PurpleService: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownInterface (Interface 'org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable' was not found) I'm using dbus 1.2.14 and latest Pidgin. I tried it on Kubuntu with the same software and I got the same errors. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it a problem in Pidgin or libpurple itself? Also, could you give me some hint about what should I do? Pulseaudio and volume control
Greetings. I'm using pidgin-2.5.6 and pulseaudio-0.9.15 and I'm having difficulty setting the volume of pidgin notification sounds. I use pavucontrol to set the playback levels for various apps / streams / whatever. The trouble is that pidgin's sounds are too short for me to be able to grab onto the volume slider in pavucontrol. Pavucontrol only displays a volume slider when a sound is being played, so pidgin appears for a very short period of time, then disappears again. After some searching around, I found a post along the same lines in the pulseaudio mailing list, where the response was that pidgin should use libcanberra for notification sounds, which would result in pidgin sounds going through the 'System Sounds' stream / whatever. 'System Sounds' are *always* visible in pavucontrol. I'm not 100% convinced with this answer however. Personally I would prefer to see pavucontrol display levels for apps even while they're not playing ( perhaps in another page ). Anyway, this isn't possible now. Are there any known solutions? Are there any plans to use libcanberra as per the suggestion mentioned above? Is there any dialog between pidgin & pulseaudio communities on this issue? Thanks :) Dan___ Support mailing list Support@pidgin.im http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

The minimized icon turns a light blue, which I don't see, and the audio notification gets lost in the music I'm listening to. I would like to see a pop-up that stays on the screen, and doesn't fade away. I would like to see the light blue minimized icon flash in Red. I'm sure there's a way to do this, either standard configuration, or a plug-in, but I haven't been able to find it. I've found the "tabbed" interface that seems to be a popular thing of late annoying -- it means I lose the context I'd gain from looking at my taskbar or the alt-tab captions. Your problem relates to this. If you separate each conversation into its own window, you get the effect that you're looking for in your system tray (similar to older versions of AIM, for example). It's not a "pop up" but it is a persistent notification of which conversations have changed. -Dan -- "there is no loyalty in the business, so we stay away from things that piss people off" -The Boss, November 12, 2002 Dan Mahoney Techie, Sysadmin, WebGeek Gushi on efnet/undernet IRC ICQ: 13735144 AIM: LarpGM Site: http://www.gushi.org --- ___ Support mailing list Support@pidgin.im http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support
