pidgin refuses to connect

I run debian wheezy (testing) and the pidgin package provided does not
connect. I've read that this could be because of a problem with dbus
and/or NetworkManager and was instructed to run pidgin -f.

With that, pidgin just doesn't connect and the list stays blank but it
doesn't display a message about waiting for a connection anymore.
