Good afternoon Mr Scola,

To better help our understanding of why Oracle employees seek the
Pidgin mailing list for help could you please answer the simple
question of how you found out about using the mailing list for help?

With that information we might be able to better direct future Oracle employees.

I'd like to chime in to provide more detail;

1, Android has a native development kit so that C and C++ code can run
on Android, however yes you need a version for each processor
architecture, although generally ARM and x86 are going to cover the
market.
http://developer.android.com/tools/sdk/ndk/index.html

2, Android doesn't use X11, it has its own custom graphics stack, at
its core is SurfaceFlinger, whilst X11 is available on Android, it's
not there by default.
http://source.android.com/devices/graphics.html

3, GTK has not been ported to Android, I have never seen any hint that
there is any intention to do so, a GUI would have to be written in
native Android calls or using the Qt toolkit.

4, A multi-protocol chat client is a very bad idea for a mobile
device. Think about all the wake-ups that happen with the client
chatting to the servers, your battery wouldn't last two hours. None of
the protocols were designed with low power and radio signals in mind,
this was one of the reasons that Google gave for developing Hangouts.
They centralised as much as possible and keep the chatter low on the
device. XMPP has some mobile extensions, however they are still in
experimental stage.

5, APK install files for Android can be installed from a download or
memory card, you just need to turn off verification in the developer
settings of your Android phone. However the Android App store probably
doesn't have the restrictions on GPL code that Apple has.

Re: Pidgin emoticon iOS support

2013-10-08 Thread Phil Hannent
Hi Sebastian,

If you read the emoji-for-pidgin's read me it has a hyperlink to the file
to download:

https://developer.pidgin.im/raw-attachment/wiki/ThirdPartySmileyThemes/Emoji-for-Pidgin.tar.gz

You then open Pidgins Preferences screen, select the "Themes" tab, then
drag and drop the tar.gz onto the "Smiley Theme" drop down list. It will
then load it into there for you to select.

I cannot prove it works but it certainly looks like it should.

Hi again,

I would look up the font name that is being applied to the messages. You
might be able to see this in Pidgin's debug window as part of the XMPP
messages. Once you know the font name, you could check that it is actually
installed on the computer, then you could look to see if it usable with GTK
which Pidgin uses.

If you are sending Emoji then that is really dependant on the receiver
having the font installed to display them, I see that Mac OSX10.7 and

It is important to note that whilst it *might *be technically possible to
create a mobile UI for libpurple. It certainly wouldn't be good for your
battery. You have to remember that each network you connect to would cause
wake ups for your mobile device, thus draining your battery.

I am not aware of any standards which support this activity, there are
several considerations when trying to transfer files to a group of users.
Primarily bandwidth for sending, storage, waiting for acceptance from each
party and potential to spam groups of people with unwanted requests.

Whilst none of these issues are insurmountable the do offer an explanation
as to why it has not been implemented to date.

One of the Google Summer of Code students projects is to deal with a
protocol agnostic file transfer method using HTTP which might get you to
what you are looking for when it is complete:

In other words, I don't know. You'd need to do some reading of the servers

Re: Setting Up Pidgin

2013-05-16 Thread Phil Hannent
Good morning,

Protocols can be disabled by removing the plugins from the installation
location. However this is not a very good solution to the problem since
anybody could run a portable version of Pidgin and still have the facility.
If you really don't trust people (and I'd recommend you should trust
people, people are inherently trustworthy) you should block access to the
specific servers at the internet firewall. That way you can be sure the
problem is solved.

The problem with your request and Pidgin is that Gtalk, Jabber/XMPP and
Facebook are all the same protocol. So you cannot really remove Pidgins
Facebook protocol whilst keeping Gtalk because its part of the Jabber
plugin.

Regarding logging on server, you should really consult the documentation
for your chosen server. This isn't the mailing list to ask
very general questions about some other software.

Basically it looks like its working as expected. You are logged in twice,
once to MSN and once to Skype. Chances are that with the merger Microsoft
haven't yet coded a way to only send to the most recently active client so
send to all logged on clients. Which is a reasonable proposition from their
perspective.

Either way Pidgin cannot do anything about a server side issue.

Someone more authoritative might know more than me. However as far as I am
aware Pidgin uses the GTK Themes which are not linked directly to the
Windows XP themes. You can alter the GTK themes via a plugin in Pidgin.

Buddy List -> Tools -> Plugins -> Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control -> Configure

I am not sure if what you are looking for is within that Plugin, if not
then someone that knows more would possibly be able to point you in the
right direction.

The method to start Pidgin depends on your operating system. On windows you
would just need to press the Windows key, type the word Pidgin and press
enter.

Many modern Linux based systems Pidgin can be found through the same

It would then start up and show you a Wizard to help add accounts.

Pidgin is always helpful. Then perhaps stating where you are with the
application that you cannot next figure out what to do.

To activate the webcam during an conversation that supports it, you would
go to: "Conversation" menu -> "Media" -> "Video Call".

However Pidgin current only works with Video calls when using UNIX type
operating systems such as Linux. Also it currently can only be used with
the XMPP (Jabber/GoogleTalk) protocol.

Re: pidgin and VPN issues.

2013-04-16 Thread Phil Hannent
Hi,

Do you actually need Pidgins traffic to do down the VPN? Because you can
stop the VPN from becoming the default route for all traffic and only set
it to be the route for your companies servers.

If that is the case you can change the IPv4 Settings for the VPN and press
the "Routes..." button. Tick the box "Use this connection only for
resources on its network" then add the network address range of your
company network "10.0.0.0" for example.

I am not saying that it is from your description, however I once banged my head
against a brick wall for a month trying to figure out a poor connection issue at
a branch office.

All the diagnostics were fine and no errors reported. In the end it turned out
to be the 4 port switch in the router was broken, you should have seen how
pissed I was when I finally figured that one out. Lessons learned.

Get the customer to capture the debug window which is on the help menu. That
might give clues as to what is wrong.

If you mean SPIM then from then on the Buddy list you can select the "Tools"

OK, when replying on an email list you have to "Reply to all" and preferably
remove personal email addresses, unless they are not on the email list.

Also top posting in emails is considered bad. I do not naturally read in a
jumbled fashion and its nicer to reply just after what someone has written. It
helps with keeping things in context.

Also using paragraphs helps people to reply to specific questions or statements
one at a time and in context.

You are able to delete from your personal mailbox, I notice that in the toolbar
of evolution (the email client I assume you are using) that there is a big
delete icon:
http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/images/screenshots/2.4/read-mail.png

Although this is off topic for a support list for Pidgin instant messenger, a
question like this is best directed at either your local support or your
software distribution.

The debug output might be long, there is a filter so that you could limit it to
just MSN or you could disable all other accounts and just try to connect with
the failing MSN account.

Once you have a debug output try creating a ticket and uploading it there:

ORBit is the old Interprocess communication system which I think D-bus is

Sorry for the double reply,

But I just remembered that I forgot to include an error message I
thought would be important. When I start Pidgin from the terminal
without any flags, I randomly (it seems) get this error:

"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that
you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to
session: Failed to execute DBus-launch to auto launch dbus session)"

Running dbus-launch doesn't give me any errors as far as I can tell
though. I have no idea what 'ORBit' is either.. I hope this helps.

Pidgin does not run on windows mobile.

Long answer:
It relies on the GTK toolkit which has not been ported to Windows mobile and I
would be surprised if anybody was trying to.

Pidgin is based on libpurple which in theory could be ported to windows mobile,
however a windows mobile developer would then need to create a user interface
for it.

My brother just emailed me the log from the debug window (under "Help" menu), I

Never post a password to a public email list.

What version of Pidgin are you using?
Which Operating system are you using?
Which protocol are you trying to connect to?
When you say that your nickname is reset, what do you mean? Is your

A password denied access error could be due to the username not being

I assume that you are using windows since you are using Norton Firewall.

Which protocol are you trying to use?
Which port settings did Norton suggest?
Are there any proxies being used?

If you are behind a company firewall and the PC has a firewall this would be
helpful to know. Also does Norton still have the option to permit not just
ports but also applications as a whole?

I remember from years ago that Norton installs a network layer to filter
traffic, this has been the bane of some support in the past. Often turning off
the Firewall would have no effect since the layer was still installed.

Look at the debug window on the help menu, this will give more detailed
information as to why it is failing.

I have only seen such errors myself when there has been poor network
connectivity. Is there something about your internet connection that would
hamper the connection?

1, Do you have proxies?
2, Is your connection to the network stable?
3, Which operating system are you using?
4, Do you have a large number of contacts?
5, Do you have a large number of chats open at once?
6, Do you have any plugins installed which did not come with Pidgin?

It maybe hard to capture but if it happens at a (semi)predictable time you could
open the "Debug window" on the Help menu, which will give a more detailed view
of what Pidgin is doing behind the scenes.

The platform is not your biggest problem. Your understanding of the library you
are trying to use is.

If you understood the libpurple you would know that your request is a large
undertaking. For example meebo is a company that employs a fair number of
developers which are working full time on the task of creating a libpurple web
gateway.

If you only know windows and the .NET platform I would suggest that you try
learning about how to get dll's working in .NET the MSDN and google should be
your best port of call.

The Pidgin support list is really NOT the place to get help with this kind of
development. Also since none of the developers have answered your queries I
would suggest that none of them are interested.

The DLL is not usable in the way you are trying to use it. There have
been several attempts over the years but none have passed code changes
back.

The current best plan would be to create a .NET/mono wrapper for the
DLL, however this would require some work on a new developer as the
existing developers see little need for it right now.

Also I might suggest that you are bitting off more than you can chew by
trying to recreate meebo on Windows Vista.

Perhaps contributing to an open source project will give you some sense
of scale of the task you are attempting ;-)

Re-installing Pidgin will not affect any settings, the settings are held
in a file under your home folder. If you are on windows right click on
the start button and select "Explore", then navigate to the "Application
Data" folder, then open the ".purple" folder. In there you will find a
file called prefs.xml I suggest you rename that (while Pidgin is closed)
and then restart it. You will loose all your preferences so be warned.

As far as I am aware it cannot, it is left up to the Desktop Manager to
implement fast user switching to make this happen.

You might (I haven't tried) be able to launch Pidgin as a different user
using the su command.  Maybe:
su -c 'pidgin'

at a guess.

The download from monotone can and will take an age for the first time.
However the developers recommend you do not use monotone. Perhaps you
should start off with using the source:

The sound issue might be related to PulseAudio there have been a number
of problems with it.

The remote, if I recall, was meant for use with evolution many moons
ago, however Dbus has taken over as an interprocess communication
mechanism. I think you are trying to do something which the remote was
never able to do.

For the buddy icon you just need an image of some kind, file extensions of png,
jpg, gif are all good. Ideally you want the file to be small so you might want
to either edit a photo to be small and use that or find an icon from the
Internet and use that.

Do you have an image in mind?

Pidgin does support smileys, also MSN allows you to send custom smileys and
version 2.5.2 (when it is released) will allow custom smileys over XMPP (Jabber)
and Gtalk.

For the vast majority MSN is working just fine. Personally I use it 24/7
without issues. That being said, clearly you and others are having some issues
which from the error messages reported indicates a network problem and not a
problem with Pidgin itself.

In both 6136 and 6776 a proxy is being used. Pidgins proxy support has long
been lacking as most if not all developers are not behind proxies and cannot
test against the variety of proxies that are in use.

I would also say that developers are looking at your issue since in 6776 one of
the developers posted something no less than 12 days ago. Certain bugs can be
hard to track down if only a minority are experiencing the issue.

I would suggest you capture the debug window around the time of the
disconnection to help trace the common cause, creating a ticket that might end
up as a duplicate might help diagnose the situation.

Now that Pidgin has support for the relevant version of MSN to be able to show other

There a a couple of tickets in trac regarding this:

Is there a way to do that? Or to write a plugin to do that?

We're going to need a lot more information than what you provided.
Start with

what protocol you're using; if you're behind a NAT device such as a
router or a
computer with "internet connection sharing" enabled; what version of Pidgin
you're using; if you're using Pidgin on Windows, Linux, or some other

you know, what client the other person is using.

The switchboard error is usually a sign that your connection was
interrupted while you were trying to send a message. You might not
notice the other services lack of service because you are not using them
at the time or that they support offline messaging.

Could you upgrade to the latest version of Pidgin (2.5.0) because it
contains an updated version of the MSN service that may help your issue.

If it does not help, it would be useful to know which operating system
you are using, how you are connecting and what is happening in the
"Debug" window which can be found on the "Help" menu of the buddy list
at the time of the issues.

is it possible to import contacts from .xls to Bidgin?
The short answer is no. The long answer is that if you have IM (instant
messaging) contacts with a service such as MSN, Yahoo or XMPP then the service
handles looking after your contacts. If you have used an IM service before your
contacts will appear when you sign on.

If you have not used a service before and you have 2000 IM contacts to add you
are stuck with adding them manually (as far as I am aware).

I also believe that Gmail can import your contacts for email and those contacts
are available on GTalk which you can connect to using Pidgin.

The package you are looking at has not yet been included within ubuntu (as far
as I can see on my ubuntu 8.04). What the live chat support does for you is
what is talked about here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat

What you want to do is:
Start Pidgin (from Applications -> Internet -> Pidgin Instant Messenger),
Add a new IRC account,
Create a Username for yourself,
Set the server to be: irc.freenode.net
Set a password for yourself,
Save and enable the account,

When the account is enabled a message should pop-up letting you know you are
connected. You can then type:
/join #ubuntu

You are effectively done, you can ask away. Just follow the guidelines on the

Also if this is your first time in chat rooms I would say that you should not

Hello,

While I do no have a solution for the use of a pac file, you could untick "Use
default gateway" within the "TCP/IP (Internet protocol)" settings of the VPN

just go via your own gateway/router.

Is that an option?

Hi Luke,

Hope you are doing fine.

I have recently started using Pidgin and it's really a nice application. The
only problem is that most of the times I have to work on a VPN and when on
the VPN I connect to the internet using automatic proxy .pac url.

Pidgin help says that:Can Pidgin use my Windows (IE) Proxy Settings?
<http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#CanPidginusemyWindowsIEProxySettings>

Yes, if you set the proxy preference to "Use Environmental Settings", Pidgin
will parse the HTTP Proxy setting from Windows as long as you have a
specific server set; auto-detection and configuration via .pac URL do not
work, nor do proxy bypass settings.

So the problem is I am unable to connect the pidgin to the outer world while
I am behind the VPN. Just want to know if there is any way I can connect the
Pidgin to outer world using that Pac file? I am a techie.. so modifying
complicated config files won't be a problem for me if there is a workaround
available. Would be glad if you respond. Many thanks.

Bipin.

A memory leak of such magnitude would probably been found already. I know for
a
fact that when I run Pidgin for that length of time it does not even come close
to the size you are seeing.

Could you provide more details:
1, Which version of Pidgin are you using?
2, What plugins are being used? OTR? Skype? Guifications? Music
3, How many buddies do you have roughly?
4, Are you in any chat rooms for that whole time?

There was a bug reported on the windows version that relates to GTK to do with
the wallpaper changing:
http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4722

There is a page on how to report bugs, however it is more targeted at crashes
or
something failing:
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports

As a developer you can run the software within a tool that highlights memory
leaks, however that is probably too complex for a support situation.

Sorry I cannot be more specific but with more information we might be able to
get to the bottom of this.

Phil Hannent

I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy.

Recently, I noticed that pidgin was using around 600MB of memory (according to
the VIRT column in top); I killed it, and about that much disappeared from
swap--I think this means that pidgin had actually used that memory for
something; it wasn't like the way a Java process will list the max allocation
in its VIRT column. As I'm running a relatively low-memory system (0.5G), this
is a significant problem. It had been running for at least a week, probably
several; I use it for plain-vanilla instant messaging over Jabber and AIM.

I'd like to know how I can diagnose the memory leak, to file a more helpful bug
report. Is there a trace tool? Some particular incantation to create a useful
debug log?
