Today I have found time to dig into the above problem; it turned out
that the './configure' for pidgin on my FreeBSD 8-CURRENT must be run as:

$ CFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' ./configure
--disable-vv --disable-nm --disable-tcl

without the CFLAGS and CPPFLAGS it does not see the installed
/usr/local/include/libintl.h;

and even with this ENABLE_NLS is not set to 1 in ./config.h; after
changing this by hand, pidgin runs fine in Spanish with LANG set to
es_ES.ISO8859-1;

Thanks for the idea; but:

g...@current:~> ps ax | fgrep pidgin
 2546   6  S+ 0:00,01 fgrep pidgin
g...@current:~> LANG=de_DE.ISO8859-1 pidgin

and it comes up in English

Thx

Did you check if pidgin is not already running (in English)
and that command just made it show its window, instead of
starting it (in German).

Just a wild guess ;-)

Thanks. But, you may asume that I have known this and did a lot of
tests, like:

g...@current:~> env | fgrep LC
g...@current:~>

i.e. I have no LC_ in my env

g...@current:~> LANG=es_ES.ISO8859-1 date
martes, 13 de octubre de 2009, 16:54:33 CEST

i.e. brings up date's output in Spanish;

g...@current:~> LANG=de_DE.ISO8859-1 date
Di 13 Okt 2009 16:54:40 CEST

i.e. brings up date's output in German

g...@current:~> LANG=de_DE.ISO8859-1 pidgin

does not bring up Pidgin in German, stays in English; why?

My environment is FreeBSD 8-CURRENT and KDE.

Your situation is slightly different as you're not on Windows.

Pidgin (like the rest of the software on your computer) runs according
to your locale
(http://www.gnu.org/software/hello/manual/gettext/Locale-Environment-Variables.html)

I assume you're on Windows because this has been reported by a few
other users of 2.6.2.

Hi Anna,

I've similar problem: I want to have it in Spanish, and not in English;
I compiled 2.6.2 from the sources and this installs all languages
message objects below /usr/local/share/locale, for example:

find /usr/local/share/locale -name pidgin.mo
...
/usr/local/share/locale/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo
/usr/local/share/locale/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo
/usr/local/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo
/usr/local/share/locale/eo/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo
/usr/local/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/pidgin.mo
...

but Pidgin is not using them; I've watched with truss(1) what it is
doing after launch, and it does not look for these files:

$ truss -f -o /tmp/tr pidgin
$ fgrep pidgin.mo /tmp/tr
(shows nothing)

So I'm a bit clueless how this is supposed to work (and have not enough
time to dog through all the sources :-( )

Maybe some kind soul could sheet a bit light onto this darkness;

Thx

Pidgin in english

2009-10-13 Thread Anna Schnauder
Hello,

I have been using pidgin for a year now. Till yesterday always in english.
Yesterday I downloaded the new client and installed it. Now I have to use it
in German! Is there a possibility to get pidgin in english (I didn't find
any link where I could get it in english, it always downloaded the german
version)? It's not that I don't understand German (it's my mother tongue)
but since I work in the IT I am used to working with english software (and
not with german). Could you please help me??

What you're experiencing is the result of a bug in the 2.6.2 installer
that has been fixed for the next release.

You can set Pidgin to be in English as mentioned in the FAQ:

Downloading and installing Pidgin on a Swedish WinXP, from a Swedish IP sets
the language to Swedish as default without any obvious way to change it.
I would like to have the whole program in English instead, how?
