Re: Help with Wox Pidgin plugin

2022-12-11 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Jakub,

I've not used wox before, but looking at the source code for that wox
module it looks like you create a hard-coded list of XMPP contacts in a
contact.json file which looks like [{"name":"internal name", "alias":
"friendly name", "email": "xmpp address"}...] and then it calls an xmpp:
URI handler to send the message, assuming that Pidgin is installed as the
system XMPP handler?

Not the greatest workflow to be honest, and won't work with your Telegram
use-case. Something that used the Pidgin Dbus API to lookup current
contacts, and handled more than just XMPP would be cooler :)

Cheers,
Eion

You don't create accounts on Pidgin; you create them on a server, then
configure Pidgin to access them. There are many types of server that
Pidgin can use, and for some of those types, there are many possible
instance of servers.

Without knowing which type of server you are trying to connect to and

You seem to be under the misapprehension that the Pidgin community
operates the venue you are talking about; it doesn't.

Pidgin is a client that can access many different services, and this is
a peer support forum, so is going out to users.

You need to work out which service you are using, and who manages it,

This will be the certificate on the server, not anything that is under
pidgin's control. Pidgin is an, open source, messaging client that can
work with many types of server, including some public services, so there
is no simple answer to your question.

Also certificates have to be signed by a trusted third party (e.g.
Verisign, or LetsEncrypt, or even your own corporate one). Details of
the procedure will also depend on which is being used. (If you are
FurnaceFilterKing, the trusted third party for your public web site is
DigiCert Inc. However, your internal server might be using the old
branding and might have a different certifier.)

We need to add another account for an employee, how do we do that? Please
Reply all when replying back to this email.

Again, this is something that needs to be done on the server, not on
pidgin. Once you have created the account, you can then configure the
new employee's pidgin to access it.

Also note that there is no formal support organisation for Pidgin. This
mailing list is answered by users.

The problem is the archives aren't static and need abandoned software to
"stay as the are". I can dump then in a container to limit risk, but that's
still not ideal.

Re: Email Lists

2022-10-14 Thread Haudy Kazemi
Hello,

A few thoughts:

Is the idea that this will be self-hosted somewhere?

Or that it will be small enough to fit on the free service tiers? That is
50k monthly content requests like page/message/thread views and 5 GB
storage.
https://free.discourse.group

The paid tiers can get pricey:
https://www.discourse.org/pricing

Discourse does appear to offer email to forum bridging for those who prefer
to receive and send messages via an email client of their choice. Here is
one group's info about this topic:
https://gramps.discourse.group/t/discourse-email-settings/116

As long as the list archives are available somewhere, I don't think it is
necessary to actually import those archives into a replacement tool or
forum.

I personally prefer email, at least for lower volume groups like this. It
seems a forum with a full bidirectional bridge to email would be
functionally equivalent.

I am not sure user import is necessary. Also, some people may not want to
be signed up on hosted Discourse or another service with their current
names/user accounts/email addresses.

An alternative approach is a self-signup period, announced regularly on the
current list, where everyone is encouraged to signup in the new space but
not use it for posting except testing.

Then follow up with a cutover date where all posts should go to the new
system, and old system is made read only (except for sending a few more
sign up reminder messages).

Speaking of the Google Chat plugin, is there a way to make it show offline buddies as actually
"offline" rather than "away"?
The older Hangouts plugin used to get it right.

Agreed. There is no need to change the state of the archives (especially

The issue with the current archives is that pipermail is a mailman 2

My comment only concerned the anonymization. I feel that anonymizing them any

As long as I can automatically read all messages and post to the list
entirely and solely by email then I vote yes to the migration.

I am not interested in a web UI other for one-off configuration jobs.

I would hope that users were transparently imported into the new system
with no user interaction required.

As for archives from before the migration, it seems to me that these do
not need to be imported into the new system; they can stay where they are.

I fail to follow. If anything, a web forum is /less/ intrusive than an email
list, as you have better control over notifications.

Typically, what I find with support forums, is that the people making one time
appearances, to ask a question, prefer forums, because they are fashionable,
but those who stick around and answer tend to prefer mailing lists.  However
both mailing list and forum camps can have a serious amount of religious
fervour.

I prefer forums because they make it easier for me to find what I am looking
for, even when it is questions to answer.

The risk with forums in high volume cases, is that they fragment, because lots
of people want to own their own forum.

That may be true for purely social ones, but there is little reason for
technical forums to fragment.

Even if mailing lists fragment, you can use mail filters to put them back
together, albeit you still run the risk of the same question getting asked on
all of them, and the complete answer being spread across them.

Pidgin is not that popular so there is little risk of its support forum/list to get
anywhere close to "high volume".
(Compare to, say, Red Flag Deals https://forums.redflagdeals.com - 1.9M
threads, 30M posts, 1.3M registered users. Imagine managing that in a mailing
list)

I would even say that the fact that Pidgin doesn't have a discussion forum more
accessible to new users is more than a contributing factor.

Fragmenting is also not a risk, since the people will go where the developers
are to answer their questions.

If Discourse can provide the mailing list experience to some and a web forum
experience to others, I see it as the best compromise.

I absolutely agree with this.

In fact, this is part of why I like Discourse, I follow as a mailing

has the forum-based features for those needing support.

No. It seems to be a forum, much prefer mailing lists, forums always
treat email as a second-class (or worse) add-on.

Discourse is one of the best if not the best of the web-based forums in
terms of supporting mailing-list mode. I participate in a couple where I
operate primarily or exclusively by email.

But, it needs the email feature to actually be enabled and a lot of
Discouse installations don't bother, in which case you can read via
email but need to pop into the web interface to post.

While I actively prefer mailing lists, the reality is what it is: Forums
work better for new users, and for one-off question askers.

As someone who enjoys supporting and helping others, the forum has
another perk: Users can actually search and find related topics to have
a chance at solving their own issue. Discourse offers up suggestions for
related posts automatically.

tagged messages, and replies to my postings.

The problem I'd have with pidgin as anything but pure email format would

The risk with forums in high volume cases, is that they fragment,
because lots of people want to own their own forum. Historically, at
least, the reason for actually providing forum infrastructure was
targetting, although the Discourse ones I'm on are only used to

No. It seems to be a forum, much prefer mailing lists, forums always

I don't see a problem as long as a forum allows to emulate a mailing
list. If Discourse allows one to subscribe "to everything" and reply
to posts with email, then you get pretty much a mailing list in your
email client.

I don't know if Discourse allows that, but if somebody confirms, then
there should be no problem.

I can confirm. See my other email to this list for details.

Discourse bills itself as a mailing lit alternative, and as such offers a
smooth and gradual transition, allowing people that prefer the mailing list
experience to keep it.

We were asked to vote, I vote against anything that looks like a forum
and has a web interface. YMMV.

I'm also against any type of forum and prefer stay with the list.

I understand your reluctance to use a web interface, but Discourse can be
configured to behave exactly like a mailing list for the people that prefer
that mode of communication.

If you can continue using it that way, communicating via email without having
to deal with a web interface, would it bother you that other people can have

I have always been in favour of forums over mailing lists due to the added
flexibility and control that they offer, so this is a resounding YES from me.

I am not familiar with Discourse in particular, but I checked their web site,
and they say that the platform integrates with email:

| Reply via email
|
| When you aren’t active on the website, your notifications will be
automatically sent to you via email. Reply via email from anywhere, on any
device.

So the people that prefer to use email can continue with their current workflow.

*Edit before sending*

I dug a bit deeper and this is what their FAQ says:

| Discourse can be used as a mailing list
|
| With properly configured incoming mail, Discourse can be used just like a
mailing list. If you’ll be interacting with Discourse exclusively by email,
consider enabling Mailing list mode in your personal preferences, provided it’s
enabled on your forum.

I registered an account on a Discourse board to check, and indeed there is this
setting:

| Mailing list mode
| [_] Enable mailing list mode
| This setting overrides the activity summary.
| Muted topics and categories are not included in these emails.

And most interestingly, if the server is configured to allow it, you don't even
have to set up an account!

| Enable “Accept emails from anonymous users with no accounts” if you want
staged users to be created when an incoming email address does not exists yet.

When it comes to this migration, would you like to have users imported into the
new system? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter)

It does not matter to me. Registering an account with the same email takes 2
minutes.

That said, if makes it transparent and zero-effort for the people that prefer
to continue using email, then I am all for it.

When it comes to the archives, would you prefer to have it imported into the
new system? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter)

It does not matter to me. If it makes the archives searchable and minimizes
the number of times that the same questions need to be answered over and over
again, then I am for it. If it makes the migration more complicated, then it
can be dropped.

Thank you,
Alex.

But forum means there is somewhere else I need to look to participate,

Yes.

As someone who often has to subscribe to various mailing lists, I can say they
are very annoying. And the reason is that, often times you want to track only a
single topic and nothing else. But you can't: you either get everything or
nothing at all. You either subscribed, or you are not, and just hope that you
email will pass spam-filters and that people who reply to you wouldn't forget to
add you to CC. It is an unwieldy system.

As a disclaimer though, I probably won't subscribe to Discourse myslelf, Idk if
that matters. I still only subscribed here just because it's a very low-activity
list, so I didn't even have to create filters for it, etc. But at the moment I
don't develop a Pidgin addon (I did at the past, but not anymore), so my
presence here is not justified. So, here's that, just FTR.

Yes.

If it's possible, then sounds fun, why not. It would mean people won't even
notice that migration happened, sure.

> the new system? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter)

Yes.

It's good for indexing by search engines, as a bunch of useful information would
appear on the new Discorse system.

I don't see a problem as long as a forum allows to emulate a mailing list. If
Discourse allows one to subscribe "to everything" and reply to posts with email,
then you get pretty much a mailing list in your email client.

I don't know if Discourse allows that, but if somebody confirms, then there
should be no problem.

I don't see offhand a deb package anywhere, but I presume you could build this
https://github.com/dequis/purple-facebook and put the .so file to
`~/.purple/plugins/` dir. This shouldn't be too hard: just install the dev
packages, and do a `./autogen.sh && ./configure && make -j$(nproc)`

As a side note, it seems the plugin will be included to the next major Pidgin
version. I wonder when it's going to be released…

Re: How to log out and create new Pidgin account

2022-08-20 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

You can add multiple accounts for pidgin to use at the same time through
the Accounts->Manage Accounts screen. Then click the Add button to add the
new account. This also lets you merge buddies from two different accounts
in your buddy list. Eg you might have a buddy on both Facebook and Discord,
if you merge them together then the conversation history will also be merged

If you're still getting notifications that you aren't expecting to see, it
might be because you're closing pidgin instead of quitting it. The easiest
way to do so is to right click on the Pidgin system tray icon (you might
have to expand the system tray as windows likes to collapse it by default)
and choose Quit. There's also a Quit option from the Buddies menu from the
buddy list, but you'd need the system tray to open the buddy list

Eion

Hi Tomas,

I've had similar struggles with Win11 - probably an updated API for
network availability in there somewhere.  As a workaround, I've edited
my Pidgin shortcut to run  "pidgin.exe -f" which makes Pidgin ignore
the online/offline status that Windows is reporting.

Hope that helps you as much as it's helped me!

working.
Problem seems to show once you upgrade from W10 to W11 on some PC.
What

could
be related to some eco/sleeping feature? What can we try to find

Re: How to cite Pidgin?

Hello,

If you mean the Pidgin website then I would have thought you could cite
it in the same away as any other website. I presume that your
educational establishment has a formal citation standard which should
cover web citations.

If you mean a message you have received via Pidgin then personally I'd
cite this in the same way as one would cite a private letter or personal
phone call.

Re: FYI Using GoogleTalk after the "shutdown"

I just wanted to share what worked for me. I found a couple of weeks

if there was any work-around that worked for me. I enabled 2FA on my
account, and then generated an App Password and used that with Pidgin.
To my somewhat amazement, it worked, and has continued to work now for
2 weeks.

It may work for some time with workarounds, but I don't think the plugin will
be maintained. The dev effort will likely go into the new GoogleChat plugin.

Hi there,

Based on the timing of your email, are you talking about the recent closure
of the Google GTalk servers? If so, you'll want to move over to the
googlechat plugin.

Otherwise, if not, are you able to share what service/server you're trying
to connect to that's failing - or maybe what the error message youre
getting in Pidgin?

Re: Pidgin stuck at "connecting" after while Windows 11

2022-06-14 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Tomas,

I've had similar struggles with Win11 - probably an updated API for network
availability in there somewhere. As a workaround, I've edited my Pidgin
shortcut to run "pidgin.exe -f" which makes Pidgin ignore the
online/offline status that Windows is reporting.

Hope that helps you as much as it's helped me!

Cheers,

What branch are you on? Bitbucket removed mercurial support multiple years
ago.. Or more specifically, where did you clone pidgin from? The canonical
repository is at https://keep.imfreedom.org/pidgin/pidgin/ and the default
branch is up to date and pointing to the proper talkatu repository at
https://keep.imfreedom.org/talkatu/talkatu.

Re: Problem building pidgin (talkatu)

2022-04-03 Thread Konstantin Kharlamov
Regarding the error: it is trying to fetch talkatu repo, but the repo was
deleted, which is why you're getting a 404. This really should be reported to
the developers. It is trivial to fix: just replace (I presume in meson.build,
but am not sure, you might want to grep for the string over the sources) the

https://bitbucket.com/pidgin/talkatu

with

https://keep.imfreedom.org/talkatu/talkatu/

that's the new URL of the repo.

With that said: I am not sure you're really doing the correct thing. You see,
you're trying to build a 3.0 version of Pidgin, that's the development version,
which AFAIK has major changes to plugin API. Latest stable Pidgin release is
2.14.8.

Is there any particular reason you're trying to build Pidgin from sources? It is
usually in repositories of all distros, so there should be no reason in doing
that other than wanting to do the Pidgin development (not even a plugin
development, that one doesn't require building Pidgin from sources).

Glad you're enjoying it. To completely disable sounds you can open the

Please see attached image for more details.

Sorry about that, it's been on our todo list for a while to get it fixed
and noted as much in our release notes.

Can the installer be updated to remove the spell check option or update the
link it is supposed to install the libraries?

Can the Developer Wiki site be updated to reflect the changes?

As I mentioned above it is in our release announcements[1] and we're
planning on fixing it, it's just time consuming and error prone and
honestly you're the first person to mention it in over a year. So it
didn't seem like many people were interested in it.

That said, I will make it a priority for the next release.

I was hoping someone more familiar with this aspect of Pidgin was going
to answer, but really you need help from someone you trust, as this
relates to the mechanisms that are used to ensure you are really talking
to the server, not to an impostor who is then forwarding things to the
server.

It appears that only IRC and XMPP use this. I'm guessing that you are
trying to access an IRC server run by voxi.ru, but if it is actually an
XMPP one, please let us know.

The could mean:

1) someone is pretending to be the server and hoping you won't check
properly or will override security warnings;

2) Pidgin never had the CA certificate needed to verify the server - was
it working before;

3) The server has updated its server certificate which is now signed by
a new CA certificate (you may want to check you have the latest Pidgin
and have current security updates for your OS - this might be the case
if they were using a Lets Encrypt certificate, as there was a recent,
relatively chaotic, retirement of one of their CA certificates;

4) The server has a certificate that is signed by an intermediate
certificate, which they haven't sent to you, and which you didn't
already have.

There will be differences in how to add a missing CA certificate on your
side, depending on the OS, so you should tell us what that is, and as
you shouldn't take information from lightly used mailing lists at face
value, you really need someone you can trust to make sure that you don't
compromise your machine by adding a certificate that you shouldn't trust
to the extent necessary for your personal security needs.

For background on the concepts referred to above,

may be useful.

Re: Big problem pls help

2021-10-26 Thread pidgin

Unfortunately, no.

Several things could go wrong:

* Something on your computer interferes with the connection (I think somebody
once had an issue with peerguardian installed)
* Your ISP messes with the connection
* The server does not like your IP address
* The server does not like your account
* You've been cursed by the elder gods

I would try installing an XMPP client on your mobile device and trying to
connect from it, both via your wifi (same external IP and ISP) and turning wifi
off via cellular data (different IP and ISP), to narrow it down.

You can also try the web client at https://chat.jabb.im/
and maybe check https://jabb.im/antispam/ (whatever it may be)

See if the Jabbim FAQ helps (Q. 4 in particular), and try their online support at
https://chat.jabb.im/?r=jab...@chat.jabb.im=
or email them at supp...@jabbim.zendesk.com
In fact that should have been your first course of action, given that the
problem manifests with multiple clients.

Also, try creating an account with a different server (jabber.at is the one I
use) and see if you get the same issue with them.

As a last resort, sacrifice a black goat to Cthulhu.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
Maybe one of the other users on this list can offer something.

Good luck!

Pidgin is a client, just like Miranda, PSI and the others you tried.
If the disconnection happens with all of the clients, I doubt there is anything
you can do on the Pidgin side to resolve.

One thing you could do is start Pidgin with debugging and then look at the log
for possibly more detailed errors, though I don't know how helpful it will be.

My batch file (on Windows) looks like this:

Re: Fw: HELP

2021-10-22 Thread David Woolley
Please reply on list. This is a peer support forum and works best when
multiple people can see and check the answers. Also people don't want
to keep answering the same question, so it works best when people with
the same problem can find the answers by searching.

Pidgin supports a number of service types, and in some cases,
particularly XMPP, a number of organisations provide those services, so,
in those cases, it also provides the ability to configure the network
address for the provider.

If Pidgin was provided for work or education use, the service provider
is likely to be your employer or college. More generally, if Pidgin was
provided pre-configured, you should consult whoever configured the
machine. You couldn't configure it yourself without knowing the service
provider.

Many of the mass market services have now been closed down, but in the
past service providers for those included Microsoft, Yahoo and Google.
I've lost track of which companies still provide public services with
open protocols.

You need to contact the provider of the service you are using.  Pidgin
is just a tool that passes the user and password on to the service
provider, and passes the provider's rejection back to you.  It doesn't
decide whether or not they are correct.

There isn't enough information for me to guess your service provider.

Re: Issue with Pidgin text

2021-10-05 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

Pidgin itself doesn't send any text messages, but it can connect to other
companies' systems that do. So we're not able to help. You might want to
get in touch with your service provider, Tali, to discuss.

Cheers,
Eion

You are missing rather important information, which makes me think you
don't really understand what Pidgin is. Most users of Pidgin do not use
services for which a phone number has any meaning at all. You need to
tell us the service you are using.

Chances are that your problem is with that service and not with Pidgin,
but if you need to pursue Pidgin, you will need to provide us with error
messages, and the debugging logs it produces.

The only phone number based service I'm aware of is a South African one,
but I haven't seen that mentioned in a long time.

I've taken the developer list out of the recipients, as cross posting is
a bad idea on mailing lists and this doesn't seem to be on topic there.

Just copy that directory over to the new computer (when Pidgin is not running)

How can I keep the fingerprint of pidgin to my XMPP account the same or does it

it screw up my account or what.
