SUGGESTION: Exporting contacts

2013-03-25 Thread Amit Sehgal

I think pidgin needs a file menu option to allow the exporting of list for
import to another pidgin client.

So this would include user xmpp accounts, and all associated contacts.

The import on another Pidgin Client would import everything as is.

All the end user might have to do if they are a different end user, is change
the login credentials and then re-authorise to all contacts.

It would make it easier for people in organisations. As an example, I have
built up a nice list with lots of groups for example with various people from
departments categorised within them and it would be great if I was able to
export that for new colleagues who join.

With regards

Amit

I neglected to send this to the list.

This is easily handled by a plugin. Such a plugin may have to make
sure that, e.g., it doesn't add users so fast that it triggers server
rate limiting or the like, but the process would be reasonably
straightforward.

I doubt this is a common enough use case that we want to support it in
Pidgin proper. The most common use for this feature (copying contacts
wholesale from one computer to another for the same user) is already
handled by simply moving blist.xml from place to place.

All the end user might have to do if they are a different end user, is
change the login credentials and then re-authorise to all contacts.

For this specific case, XMPP servers have the capability of serving
partial or complete buddy lists to their clients. You may want to
look into having an organized directory installed on your
organization's XMPP server.
