Upgrading from GAIM

2009-08-12 Thread Mike Webb
I've been using GAIM 1.5.0 for some time (it came with my copy of Puppy
Linux) and have been quite content with it. Up until now, I've seen no
reason to upgrade to Pidgin. I am presently running Puppy Linux 3.01.

Now there's a reason. I'm getting messages from Yahoo! that support (I
presume protocol support) for the "Yahoo! Messenger" (hee hee hee) I'm using
expires August 15. I'm presuming Pidgin will take me back into the
"supported" realm, and have installed it.

However, I've not seen any notes on how to make moving to Pidgin an actual
upgrade in the sense of my accounts, settings, logs and such from GAIM being
imported into Pidgin. May I simply drag-n-drop my GAIM data directories'
content into the corresponding Pidgin data directories, or is more required?
Are there things that have changed so much (such as the settings files) that
I cannot simply use the GAIM files, but have to set it up from scratch?

Any help along this line will be appreciated. The 15th is only 3 days away!

Thanks,
Mike Webb

Be sure and locate then Back-Up accounts.xml and then store the backup
copy some place SAFE. This file contains all Your Contacts/Buddies, etc.

Upgrading from 1.5.1 or earlier is seamless. Just back up .gaim before running
Pidgin for the first time in case you run into some weird case we weren't able
to test when we wrote the migration code.

Pidgin attempts to migrate all your settings from Gaim. So you
shouldn't need to do anything special--your settings and accounts
should all be imported automatically.

Thanks for your quick responses. Since the settings and all were not
imported from GAIM when I started (all I get on Pidgin startup is a
prompt to set up accounts), I presume that the .pet file (Puppy Linux'
distribution file) simply dumped the program files into the
appropriate places and did not run an install routine. So I'm back to
where I started. The program is in place, but no data has been
copied/converted/moved/whatever from GAIM.

In a regular Pidgin install routine, would the files simply be copied
from .gaim to .pidgin? I note that there is presently a /root/.gaim
directory but not a /root/.pidgin directory. I'm presuming that I will
need to move the data over manually, but don't know if importing is a
simple drag-and-drop or if there is a file format conversion involved.
Where do I go from here? If someone's able and willing to walk me thru
the process off-list, I'd appreciate it. I have AIM, Y!M and MSN
accounts so we could talk thru any of them. Thanks again!

I think it's a bit more complicated than that, but I don't remember
the specifics.

The new directory is ./root/purple Also, it's generally suggested
that you use root only when needed, and to log in as a normal user the
rest of the time. Using root makes it more likely that an accidental
or malicious command could break something on your system.

If you haven't configured anything in Pidgin yet, you can try exiting,
deleting your current /root/.pidgin directory, then starting Pidgin
again and letting it import from the now existent /root/.gaim
