This afternoon, I suddenly found shortcuts to launch SeaMonkey and
Thunderbird on both my desktop and the Windows XP "quick launch" area of
my task bar.  Neither program has been updated since 28 October, when I
did partial .mar updates from SeaMonkey 2.0.9 to 2.0.10 and from
Thunderbird 3.1.5 to 3.1.6.

What is going on here?

You can use the bookmarks sidebar instead without exporting the 
bookmarks.html at all.
