David

I have several - an Intel iMac (my main machine), a G5 iMac, an Intel
Macbook Pro, and a new Mini with an SSD hooked into my living room TV.

Wow! Do you use any anti-virus programmes on any of them?

Yes - I prefer Norton AV (and *not* the full Internet Security Suite).
I've been using it since OS 7 and never had an issue with using it. I
have it on all of my Macs. Most of the people (Mac and PC) that I meet
that have issues with NAV are running the full Suite - I always advise
people to just buy/run the anti-virus only.

OK - Interesting, Rufus!

I suppose my next question is, do you run MS Windows on your Macs?

My Apple store have assured me over the last few years that I didn't
*need* any AV programme! I'm in the UK using BT as my ISP. They have
provided McAfee Internet Security FOC as part of my package and, in
addition, BT scans every email before downloading it to my machine!

...and they hate it in Apple stores when I assure customers that they
*do* need AV software on their Macs. For two reasons, IMO. First -
because Macs *are* vulnerable, and increasingly so.

Second, someone using a PC may pass you a virus or some malware that
won't run on your Mac...but you still run the risk of passing it along
to another PC user - I conjecture that e-mail Attachments are the
biggest risk for this happening. So just out of common courtesy you
should have an AV program running on your Mac to prevent you from
becoming an inadvertent "carrier" of sorts.

Personally, I don't have Windows on my iMac!

Not as yet, but I do intend to put a Windows partition on the spinning
drive in my Mini and experiment with some PC based flight simulators in
the future - that's why the Mini is configured through my 55" flat panel
TV...Falcon Allied Force is life sized!

I suppose then I'll enter a new-old world of vulnerability...I have to
deal with PCs at work and can't stand them.

Are there any specific Mac Usenet groups you are aware of/use?

I monitor alt.macintosh, but it's pretty slow.

I had a quick look. Not terribly exciting, I agree!

I get most of my Mac news
and info from Macintouch -

http://www.macintouch.com/

Very informative site - I read it daily, throughout the day.

Thanks for that. I'd not seen it before. Bookmarked!

D.

Macintouch is a really good info source - been following it for years.

Thanks for all your interesting and helpful comments, Rufus. It's been
good to meet you, so to speak! I'd best conclude now or I'll be rambling
on forever!

I wish you and yours a very Happy Easter - have a great weekend! :-)

Gotta love it... Apple is just now getting around to updating java to
release 31:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5228

Description: Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Java 1.6.0_29, the most
serious of which may allow an untrusted Java applet to execute arbitrary
code outside the Java sandbox. Visiting a web page containing a
maliciously crafted untrusted Java applet may lead to arbitrary code
execution with the privileges of the current user. These issues are
addressed by updating to Java version 1.6.0_31. Further information is
available via the Java website at

Pretty far behind the curve given that: 1) .31 was released in February,
and 2) Mozilla tagged& took action regarding the java issue(s) some

Java plugins - How to delete?

2012-04-06 Thread W3BNR
he Java plugins (Deployment Tool Kit & Platform) for version 60.290.11 have been
disabled due to security issues and version 60.310.5 has has been installed.

Plugins for 60.290.11 still show when viewing Tools/Add-ons Manager and are
shown as 'Disabled'.

What is the process for deleting the old versions of these two plug-ins?
'Help' file is of no help for this situation.

Unless you moved the plug-in DLL file after installing Java, the
following should work:

1. On the Windows task bar, select [Start > Settings > Control Panel].

2. On the Control Panel window, double-click on the Add or Remove
Programs icon.

3. On the Add or Remove Programs window, select the Java element you
wish to remove and then select the Remove button.

Any chance your getting e-mail via MAPI and not POP?
I have seen disappearing attachments (that I can still get via the web
interface) with MAPI e-mail but it all works fine with POP.
This has been happening for quite a while however (since early 2.x
versions). It seems some clients encode the e-mail differently than
others and so I have the issue more with certain sending clients only.

For example I have one customer who is unable to send me attachments
that I can retrieve in SM but they are always there when I use the web
interface. It is something about that particular clients e-mail only.

Yahoo mail seems to be the worst offender.

I think that mapi nor pop is involved, because i did not have the
attachment in the mail present in the "Sent" folder This mail is
just a copy of the outbox - in other word, the mail did not reach my isp

OK, I still cannot reproduce Ray. However, I do see that the "paperclip
is so small as to appear inexistent when the 'Attachments' column is not
selected. I've not noticed in the past as I turn on the 'Attachments'
column; that gives me a large paperclip. Doing that also removes the
paperclip from the 'envelope', but that's OK with me.

"Look and Feel" glitch moving from SM 2.0.8 to SM 2.3.2

2012-04-06 Thread Richard Owlett
Caution - In mindset I've just made a move from 1.?? to
2.3.2. When I made a tardy move from 1.? to 2.0.? , I did
the absolute minimum as I had other "problems" to deal with.

I have a problem with displaying multiple pages saved choosing
Bookmarks -> Bookmark This Group of Tabs

Under SM 2.0.8 , clicking on the group's identifier would
*automatically* display _all_ the associated pages. [MY
preferred response]

Under SM 2.3.2 , the default behavior when clicking on the
group's identifier is to display a sub-menu individually
displaying each site and then a 'display all" option. The
*ONLY* option want is display all. If I will be interested
in displaying only one of a "related set' of pages, I would
have bookmarked it/them using "File Bookmark" option.

Before being told RTFM, I'm so lost as to not know

Unfortunately, the "groupmark" functionality was lost on the transition
from XPFE (the old interface kit used on Seamonkey 1.x) to the Firefox
toolkit (used since 2.0). The transition was necessary because there was
not people to maintain the old XPFE toolkit, and as time went it became
harder and harder to make it work with current versions of the Gecko
engine. And the Firefox guys are not interested in recreating the
"groupmark" feature.

Therefore, there is no longer a "group identifier" -- groupmarks were
converted into subfolders in the bookmarks tree. What you are referring
to as a "group identifier" is just the folder name now.

The old behavior can be approximated, however, by *middle*-clicking (or
Ctrl+clicking) on the folder title. It took me a couple weeks to get
used to the new behavior, but I found it an acceptable substitute. Most
Windows mice nowadays have either a middle button or a clickable scroll
wheel.
