Re: Incoming and Outgoing Email While Traveling
BIll Spikowski wrote: Bill Davidsen wrote: BIll Spikowski wrote: This week I used two different wi-fi connections each day while on a business trip. On one connection, I had normal full access to the web and to my incoming and outgoing email using Seamonkey. On the other connection, I had full access to the web, but could not access my regular email account either through Seamonkey or through webmail (all other websites operated normally). I've experienced similar email blockages while traveling other places. I doubt it's a Seamonkey problem, but I'm wondering what a workaround might be? Are you using the insecure ports and services, SMTP and POP3, or the secure versions of them? Some IP providers block access to the unsecured port, while other block access to all mail ports and services in the name of SPAM. I don't really know! Since I don't really understand the nuances, I usually try things until they start working, then leave them that way until they stop working Did you use webmail with an insecure (http:) URL or a secure (https:) URL, same issue, different blockage. http; I didn't know I had a choice! You can try https: if the server supports it. The solution is to run some form of VPN to a host which trusts you and has an unfiltered network access. That becomes a very deep and off-topic subject, so I hesitate to give you a more complete answer here. And people do block VPN ports as well, so even that is no panacea. The fact that other sites worked may also mean that the site where you do mail is just totally blocked, ISPs are not universally subtle, or even _competent_! The VPN suggestion sounds like a great workaround, I had never thought of that... -- Bill Davidsen david...@tmr.com We are not out of the woods yet, but we know the direction and have taken the first step. That did not work either when I attempted to open SeaMonkey...I got another window for setting up SeaMonkey. I then went into Managing Profiles and deleted the new profile. After that, I re-establish my old FrogBarb profile. I simply started the steps like I was creating a new profile with the same name as my old profile (FrogBarb) and pointed it to the place (E drive) where it previously existed...I was then back to my old profile. I shut SeaMonkey down and moved the four SeaMonkey files, the ones I had moved to my E drive repository, back to the C drive where they were originally. Yes, and CTRL-Q closes the entire SeaMonkey program -- all mail/news tabs and windows, all browser tabs and windows, everything. I've made that mistake a few times when I just wanted to close one window, and learned my lesson. Now I only use CTRL-Q when I really mean it. CTRL-W closes the current window, and if you have several tabs in that window, it closes the current tab (no prompts in either case). ALT-F4 closes the current window, and if it has multiple tabs, SM asks whether you mean to save and close all the tabs or just close them all. -- War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left. -- Paul B.
