Re: SM hangs the whole system
I am having the same issues. My anti virus program Webroot is reporting that Seamonkey is trying to change the amount of memory it is accessing. Basically accessing all memory available causing my computer to lock up. Clears up after 30 seconds or so. This just started happening a month ago. I have used Seamonkey since its inception and this is the first time I am seeing this issue. I am only accessing 1 email account so that is not the issue. There must be something in the current code causing this. I remember using Netscape when a problem like this crept up and it was in Netscape itself. It was eventually fixed. Bernie Roger Fink wrote: Ed Mullen wrote: Okay. I'm going to try to be as nice and calm as I can. In previous posts we've exchanged messages about SM hanging ... consuming every last CPU bit, etc. I just did a total re-install of Windows 7 Pro. The first time I fired up SM mail? It took over the CPU and the system. Others have commented with similar issues. I've been using this product and its ancestors since around 1994. I'm a loyal user. And I'm going to have to go find another solution because this one, much as I like it, is broken... as is Thunderbird. It's something in the mail/news component of the products. I have the same issue when trying a Firefox and Tbird combo ... if it worked I would have (grudgingly ) moved to that. No *!@*!@# The system just locked up for 20 seconds while I'm typing this!!! Screw this. Been going on for about a year and a half. I'm done. By the way, it's not just locking up SM, it's locking up my whole system. I cannot abide this. Oh, God!!! I may have to invoke ... oh, please no ... OUTLOOK! Cripes. I'm gonna go have a drink. I dunno what to do. Ed, I realize my comments aren't always appreciated in this part of town, but I ask you, realistically, what are the chances that the most recent edition of SeaMonkey that's worked well for you, when run concurrently with active virus and malware scanners, and isn't looking for trouble, is going to infect your computer. It's not a risk-free proposition, but IMO it is acceptable risk compared to the alternatives. This idea of upgrading to the latest version of anything at all costs is the Holy Grail of software developers, and fails to take into account the inherent need of developers to keep on developing. When a redirect is supposed to be executed, a notification bar is shown instead which allows you to permit the redirect on a case-by-case basis. Philip Taylor Thank you Philip - I still do not understand why or when I might want that warning. Most of sites where I have seen that do not change the URL from before Allow to after. Do rogue websites make a scam from this? Here is a use-case: I very often (several times each day) visit Reuters's U.S. news Web site. After about 5 minutes, the home page -- listing current news articles about the U.S. -- redirects to another page that is a mixture of U.S. and world news from Reuters. This often happens while I am reading a particular news article in another tab. Thus, when I return to the tab with the home page, the home page is no longer there even if I was not through with it. Having been a long-time user of the PrefBar extension, I added a checkbox to PrefBar that enables or disables the warning about redirects. I enable the warning when I go to any Reuters news Web pages. In case I forget to disable the warning, I have set user_pref(accessibility.blockautorefresh, false); in the user.js file in my profile. Nice technique! Now I have to find out how to do my profile':-) Note that the redirect at Reuters might not happen if JavaScript were enabled. However, I find the use of scripts at the Reuters Web pages to be very annoying. Yes, I have several complaints against Reuters. But I find Reuters's news to be accurate, timely, and very objective; so I put up with the annoyances. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey
