They're still there because they're still installed. Look carefully to
see if they're disabled or not.

I'd also like to find out what's causing it to flip into the open
bookmarks page, when I visit some sites.

Known issue with Flash, discussed here many times in the past couple of
months. There's even a workaround, posted many times.

You know what's odd? I restarted it with add ons disabled, then opened the
add ons window and a lot of them are still there.

What prefs could be doing this?

Yes, I also see the Captcha in Step 2 with "Load all images" selected in

come from the originating server" selected I see no Captcha.

The problem is not with SeaMonkey, it is something with your

I see no Captcha at that link, but it is just the first step of four in
the procedure. It also requires you to log into an account which I don't
have, so can't proceed any further.

In general, if the entire world isn't complaining that Seamonkey can
no longer handle Captchas, it is pretty safe to assume that Seamonkey
/qua/ Seamonkey is not at fault and that your own customisation
(intentional or otherwise) may well be to blame.

Try safe mode, try a clean profile, try disabling everything;
almost certainly one or more of these will work and disclose

Hmm, so the pref I told you only controls the extra preview text. AFAICS
there is no pref for disabling the popup altogether. Maybe it can be
hidden using CSS, but I wouldn't bet on it. Probably would need a code
change then.

Greetings,

Jens

The minimal popup (without the preview text) only shows if the folder
pane isn't wide enough to show the full name of the folder currently
hovered over. So to disable that you need to drag the splitter to the
right until the popup stops appearing.

In many cases that's WAY wider than needed. My solution, after killing preview
and just getting the full name, is "don't hover the pointer over the name in the
folder selector!"

Keep checking.

I am, however, using a 32-bit version of 2.12.1. Should that not check for a
newer 32-bit version?

That depends on if it is one you downloaded and installed from Mozilla or if
it's a package with your distribution. Fedora usually gets the package in
testing quickly, then in production about ten days later. Your distribution
almost certainly has a policy, which might not be the same.

Re Linux x86_64:
1 - there wad no 64 bit release
2 - I asked and was told it was due to lack of server power to build it
3 - after i (and others) offered server hours or contributions, we were told
that new server power was coming.
4 - I asked how they could have server power to build for beta and not for
release
5 - the x86_64 is now not in the beta builds or release

Draw what conclusions you will, I don't really want to keep an entire 32 bit
environment for one program, so I use the 64 bit version.

Don't know what the Windows version does, the Linux versions all hemorage
memory, this one is virt 1.2GB, resident 188MB, after 28 hours up.

Hope some part of this broad response hits your problem.

I often have this problem. It is caused by the fact that my preferences
are set to "Only load images that come from the originating server".

I have the PrefBar extension installed, and I can control this
preference from PrefBar's tool bar. I change it to "Load all images".
Sometimes, I can see a link to fetch a new CAPTCHA; otherwise, I merely
reload the Web page.

The only problem is remembering to restore my prior preference for "Only
load images that come from the originating server".

Check your preferences, you could have limited how images are displayed,
blocked "third party images", etc.

The "captcha" is an image created by the server you connect with for the
web page. Some servers you connect to with a captcha are themselves
third party servers, and the captcha image is created by another server
creating random images.

Although SeaMonkey is under the Mozilla Umbrella a different Group of

SeaMonkey still uses FireFox's code base for the Web Browser and

I'm quite sure UbitMenu will work in Windows 8, it just copies 3 files
to the office 2010 startup folders (for Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
(Word)UBitMenu04XX.dotx,(Excel)UBitMenu04XX.xlam,(Powerpoint)

They are just Office add-ins, no executable files. Ubit sometimes copies
them to the 'wrong' location, you can easely relocate them.

Since then I have been using Safari day-to-day, but I still use SM

Safari. Today on just such an accasion, shortly after SM browser told
me it had blocked some pop-up windows, it re-opened my "previous"

However it still couldn't see any bookmarks or history.

At the top of the visible tab on the frontmost window this message was
displayed this message :

"The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of

software can cause this problem."

I don't have any security software that I'm aware of. Can anyone use
this message to diagnose and solve my problem?

Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff, on Windows systems, SeaMonkey/Mozilla Suite did have a problem
where it would not close down properly (due to system crashes,
whatever), so the "prefs.js" file would be marked as still in use, so
when SeaMonkey was re-started, a new, empty, profile would be created.
Don't know if this was/is your problem!!

Have a look at Tools->Switch Profiles. Do you see more profiles than you
thought you had?? If so, check out the others to see if they contain
your missing bookmarks.

If that doesn't fix your problem, your bookmarks and history (and some
other stuff) are now (since ver 2.1, I think) stored in a file called
"places.sqlite". With SeaMonkey closed, do a search for this to see if
you have more than one. If so, in a thread called "Is there a way to
merge two different two local places.sqlite file copies together?" from
earlier today, David E Ross has provided a method of combining two
places.sqlite files.

HTH!

Before doing all the heavy lifting, try running Disk Utility and do a
Repair Permissions. Also try running a utility like Onyx to flush
cashes and temporary files.

Thankyou fellows for your suggestions. It's taken me a little time to
respond as I've been exploring both of them. But with both your
suggestions I've now fixed the problem.

First I found, downloaded and used Onyx. On its own that didn't fix the
problem, although cleaning up one's files is always a good thing to do!

Moving on to Daniel's suggestions, I only have one profile so the issue
of merging places.sqlite files wasn't going to be the solution. But the
mention of places.sqlite made me look more closely, and I noticed that I
had two other places.sqlite files, namely places.sqlite-journal and
places.sqlite.corrupt, both last modified on 24/7/2011, about the time
that SM browser stopped seeing my profile.

Some googling led me to
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite and I was able
to use the suggestion there about deleting both places.sqlite and
places.sqlite-journal, and then renaming places.sqlite.corrupt to
places.sqlite to give me back my SM browser's full functionality.

I'm not sure how the solution I found ties into the message I had
previously received :
"The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of
SeaMonkey's files is in use by another application. Some security
software can cause this problem.",
but I don't care and I'm very happy!

Many thanks,
Geoff

If MS Money from '99 will run on it, I sure wish Word before 2007 would. I
have MS Money for W98 but I want earlier version (non ribbon) of Word to run
but have been told it will not.

Does SM not work on Windows 8 (desktop not Metro)? I need it to work because
a Windows 8 computer is on its way. and ALL 8 of my EMail addresses are POP
only. I'm planning on using SeaMonkey Mail but now I am worried about it
working on Windows 8.

for what its worth, I LOVE Windows 8 on my old laptop... i dunno why
anyone is complaining about it. Metro has interesting features, and
doesn't need touch screen capability to swipe across the screen, both
the right/left arrows & center scroll mouse wheel take over swipe
functionality on non-touch screens...

but one doesn't ever have to use it if one stays in the desktop...

its best not to become sticks in the mud... Win 8 is very very sweet...
