I really really really don't like either having to go into the view message
body as menu, or view messages other than in plain text only mode. Most HTML
email is nothing but web pages distributed by SMTP instead of HTTP, almost
universally in mousetype, often littered with worthless images.

This almost sounds to me like some setting in config editor was messed

What OS?

2.39 on Linux.

If you go to about:config, there ought to be a lot of "user
set" items under mail.* or mailnews.*.

You could always try with a clean profile or try grabbing Portable
Thunderbird from
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable, configure
it and see if messages display properly. If portable TV display
properly, you may have some profile corruption in SM or you've
tinkered with an about:config pref in some way as to gum things up.

First I restarted without any chrome/userContent.css in profile, which helped
not.

Second, I tried safe mode, which also helped not.

Third, I shut it down and restarted only the browser, then went through
about:config filtering on string "mail", and toggled all non-default booleans
that neither were about identities nor servers and on toggle unbolded. Then I
opened mail to find problem solved. Then I shutdown, restored prefs.js,
restarted, and problem remains solved.

Wierd. No way to tell what the problem was.

Maybe because the profile is ancient, some old or obsolete cache element got
cleaned with all those boolean toggles, and stayed clean after restore?

What happens is that people writing multipart email messages will put
content in the HTML part, but nothing in the plain text part. Since
you read mail as plain text, you see nothing. I have tried repeatedly
to get people who insist on sending me multipart email to put
something useful in the plain text part, even if it is just a link to
a web page where I can then get the import of the message. Some have
actually paid attention to that, and taken my advice.

I have to admit I have no idea what that meant, but at least I am now
sending messages bottom posting.

Just found out from the web site owner that they are currently upgrading
