I noticed that there is no RSS icon in the URI area when I load the
cited Guardian news article.

How long have you subscribed to an RSS feed from the Guardian? I notice
that, when I subscribe to a new feed, I often get a lot of old feed
messages from that source.

What's the RSS feed's URL?

Is it https://www.theguardian.com/uk/rss ? (Apparently not)

Re: Demise of Sync - alternatives?

2017-07-14 Thread Frank-Rainer Grahl
Sync 1.5 has not been ported yet and with all the crap going on with Fx I am
not sure it is a good idea anyway. You need a Firefox account and everything
is tightly coupled to Mozilla. So no for official sync. You could probably
still set up your own Sync 1.1 server in 2.46 to 2.49 as mentioned but the old
1.1 code has been removed by Mozilla from the backend too in the latest
nightly releases.

In the long term we need to provide our own sync servers and make something
work but for now don't hold your breath.

Is updating Seamonkey to use Mozilla's new sync server something that's in the

not at all)?

Thomas Rocek recently posted the instructions for setting up a new Sync 1.1
server, but they're way beyond my tech abilities. Is anyone aware of a publicly
available Sync 1.1 method that Seamonkey users could rely on for the duration?

Is there a way to create a Seamonkey sync account in the latest build?

Did you change your cookie permissions? I'd expect that Facebook, like
other sites, stores a big pile of cookies in your browser, and if you've
changed a browser setting that causes your browser to delete these
cookies when it's closed, or after a very short period of time, Facebook
will make you log in again.

Have a look at what permissions you're using for Facebook (e.g. see
what's indicated when you pick Tools -> Cookie Manager while on
Facebook, or Tools -> Cookie Manager -> facebook.com -> Permissions); or
close Seamonkey, open it, and then (without attempting to log into
Facebook or do anything else) look to see whether you have stored
cookies from Facebook (Tools -> Cookie Manager -> facebook.com ->
Cookies, or chrome://communicator/content/permissions/cookieViewer.xul).

I don't know how you figured that out.
Do you keep old versions lying around?

Yes indeed, I am running 20170528045907.

Why did I not get notified of Adrian's new version?

Manual "Check for Updates" returns
No updates available.

Is it because the version number wasn't bumped?

With 'under "View"' I meant the fact where you can find the language
setting - and not the place where you can find the place to open the
preferences...
As I use the Polish version of SeaMonkey on a daily basis I
misremembered how the section is named in en-US and thought it was
"View" instead of "Appearance"...

Re: Sluggish Data Manager and Stored Passwords Manager since SM 2.46 upgrade

2017-07-14 Thread Frank-Rainer Grahl

From the 2.48b1 release notes. I should have updated the 2.46 ones too:

If you experience a hang and/or get a message box that a script is busy when
opening the Data Manager try deleting the webappsstore.* files from your
profile folder when SeaMonkey is not running. These contain data stored by web
sites and will be recreated during the next start. If you are unsure if the
information is needed please back them up before deleting them. The problem is
tracked in bug 1305624 but so far no coding error has been found.

2.40 to SM 2.46. I don't recall ever having this problem with an earlier version.

I do not see this problem. Launching Data Manager and Password Manager
seem instantaneous for me.

A slowdown might be caused by having a really huge number of some form
of managed data: cookies, preferences, passwords, etc. If this is true,
then a delay in launching Password Manager might have nothing to do with
the number of passwords since requesting Password Manager launches the
Data Manager.
