The problem is worse with IE 11. In that case, I do not even get images
on the home page.

I tried viewing "Check Out This Egg" at
 with SeaMonkey.
The image was blank. That page had 40 HTML errors and 29 CSS errors.
It has always been my position that, when any Web page that is so
faulty, failure to render reasonably is the fault of the Web page and
not the fault of the browser.

Would the United States be more prepared to deal with COVID-19
if President Trump had not cut the budgets of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC)? His administration also eliminated the
Directorate for Global Health and Security and Bio-Defense,
the agency within the National Security Council tasked to
provide early warnings about epidemics and pandemics.

I see this issue too. Even its home page sometimes do it. It started a
few months ago for me. Changing user agents, allowing send referers, and
disabling ad blocker doesn't help. I think it hates SeaMonkey. :(

When I go to https://www.theonion.com/, all images and text display
correctly.

When I click on a link within that page, like

the text and links load fine, but I can't see any images.  No images
display on any page when I click on a link from the Onion home page.
Images for onion.com are explicitly allowed in permissions and adblock.

www.theonion.com is the only website this happens on. Doesn't happen
with Chrome.

It just started a week ago.

Any ideas?

Yes. Not quite the same on a day to day basis, but similar problems with a
brand new SM profile. Although, interestingly, youtube seems to know about my
subscriptions with a new empty profile. However, the endless not loading circle
appears for both notifications and my user info. When I'm at gmail, clicking on
my user thing (in the upper right hand corner) does offer me an opportunity to
sign out.

According to https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/what-is-my-user-agent my UA
is, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
