Hiya SeaMonkies :-)

I have used TBird for many years and in that time for numerous
reasons I had to transfer the user data to the new installation and
it was the ultimate pain.

Now I am looking for something that is far less bloated, and still
secure and simple. Simple enough to be able to transfer all the user
data to a new installation of the program in less than about an
hour.

I'm told it is a combination of a browser and email reader. One
thing
I absolutely require is emails in my computer - not on the ISPs
websites with all of their crap ads.

TIA

If you are the kind of user who gets into irreversible trouble with a
dedicated email application (and you've answered that question in
your posts on the Tbird board), IMO you really don't want to install
a single program that functions as three different applications,
because getting into trouble with a multi-purpose application means
uninstalling everything, at least in the absence of being able to
fix it.

Although I am a big fan of Seamonkey in its present versions, I second
Roger's answer to you.

Being able to fix minor problems - and you will get lots of help here
-
is critical. Believe me, transferring TB from one machine to the other
is very simple, provided you take the time to gather information and
carefully use it.

Transferring Seamonkey data to another machine requires basically the
same steps, so if you think Seamonkey will solve the problems you
encountered, think again.

The strong point of SM is combining a browser and an email program
into
one, as Netscape and Mozilla Suite did. Some prefer this approach,
some don't.

The latest version of SM (1.1.16) is for me ideal: it combines the
ease
of use of TB and the (relative) simplicity of FF2 which I prefer by
fare
to FF3's.

You can actually replicate the integrated feel of the SeaMonkey suite to a
significant degree merely by installing minimize-to-tray for the two
applications TB & FF, and a common theme such as Mostly Crystal. So if you
get into trouble with either one, well then what happens in Las Vegas stays
in Las Vegas. I actually go to the extreme of using a separate newsreader
program to REALLY keep my mistakes compartmentalized, but I believe under
the rules of posting here, I'm not allowed to mention what it is.

How does one install "minimize-to-tray"? Sorry if this is a stupid
question. I did install Mostly Crystal and like it very much!

Charley

Greetings to all!

I have now made the change to Firefox & Thunderbird, and everything is
working beautifully.
I shall miss SeaMonkey a bit, but I do think my choice was wise,
considering how inexpert I am. (This also means I won't be bugging you

However, I will never forget how kind, patient, and helpful the people

Interesting. I'm running Windows/XP Pro with SP3, and that dialog

You don't want to delete your active Profile, you want to create a

Try it out with the new profile and if all goes well you can copy

Hello Charley,

This is beginning to look like you have a corrupted installation of
SeaMonkey.

Use Windows Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and remove SeaMonkey
and any other related SeaMonkey installations.

During the uninstall process you should see 2 dialog boxes, in both
boxes select to remove all of SeaMonkey, this will remove all the
files and folders in the Program Files section for SeaMonkey, but
will leave your Profiles untouched.

Download a fresh copy of SeaMonkey from
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

With Windows Explorer navigate to your Program Files folder and
confirm that all files have been removed. If any are remaining
delete them.

Install the fresh copy of SeaMonkey and allow it to use all the
default settings, if you see a selection to install for all users,
or a single user, select Single User.

Once installed you should have access to Profile Manager just after
the splash screen leaves, or from Program Files/SeaMonkey/Profile
Manager, or from the top menu of SeaMonkey select Tools/Switch
Profile/Manage Profiles. You want to create a new unique profile
for testing.

Michael

Thanks, Michael.. I did just that. Nothing has changed at all. SM

I suppose I can live with that; it's only a minute or so every day.

I am told: AdBlock Plus couldn't be loaded, maybe it didn't install

I have tried to install it many times, and this always happens.

what exactly does the message say?

Sorry to be repetitive, but it says what I wrote above. "AdBlock ...

Edit, Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings, select the account, and under

"automatically download new messages." Now, you will have to manually

put the bookmarks anywhere you want them, then from the browser, click

click on File, Open Bookmarks file, then locate the file. There, done,

close SM. Open the profile manager, and have it point to this

Sorry, Peter, but if I close SM, I surely cannot use the profile

no, you need to close SM to use the profile manager. Once SM is
closed, click on the windows start button, then run and enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

this will start the SM profile manager.

Thank you! It works, but it does *not* mention the enigmatic
"Charley" profile, I just have "default" and "test".

you're not paying attention. I said to use the profile manager, and
locate that profile. What you do is click on Create profile, get to the
area that has Default User. Rename that to Charley, then click on
Choose Folder and locate Charley

Sorry for being inattentive! I think I have now followed your
instructions faithfully. I have three profiles: Charley, default, and test.

This is not a problem, I think.

Nobody seems to have asked Charles if "Charley" is his *Windows*
profile/Account or his *SeaMonkey* profile.

e.g. c:/documents and settings/charley/

or

c:/documents and settings//application
data/mozilla/profiles/charley/

In the latter case the "charley" account should be at the same level as
"default" and "test".

Phil

Charley, when you have SeaMonkey running, have a look at
Edit->Mail&Newsgroup Account Setting, select "Server Settings" on your
Mail account and at the bottom of the screen is the "Local Directory".
Is this the same location as the enigmatic "Charley"?

Then close SeaMonkey, click on the windows start button, then run and
enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

select the profile called "Default". Does it appear to be your "Charley"
profile, i.e. has it got your mail and bookmarks set up as you normally
see them?

Daniel

Yes to both questions, as far as I can tell.

The 'profile' is really only a short cut. The ACTUAL location of your
emails will be identified by checking which directory your email
accounts are using in 'Mail and Newsgroup account setting'. I
normally change that location to the real location of my email and
newsgroup history. Things like your bookmarks will still be in the
'default' profile. I tend to just copy that over the top of a new one
created in the new machine.

I am afraid I don't quite understand. I have found the actual
location, now where should I change it?

Sorry if I am very stupid!

It is something of a mess as far as I am concerned. Especially with
'randomly generated directory names' in the equation. You need a copy of
the 'default' profile directory, and a copy of your 'Mail' and 'News'
directories.

On the new machine install seamonkey. Find where it's created the new
'default' profile and copy your saved profile directory there. That
should also give pointers to where the Mail and News directories were on
the old machine, but it's probably worth tidying things up, so put them
somewhere 'tidy' for you. In the 'Mail and Newsgroup account setting'
preferences, change the server setting -> local directory to point to
this directory.

Thanks a lot! I think I understand everything now.
