(I know it's a big one) results in Seamonkey crashing. This has been
true for 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 in my case. It seems to be true for links
connecting to PDF files. IE8 connects without difficulty. My OS is
Windows 7 with 8 GB memory and ample disk space. I just did a clean
install of 2.0.4 after uninstalling 2.0.3 but the problem remains.

BTW, I can usually right click and save the link target with no
problem
but, clicking to connect crashes Seamonkey.

Any suggestions??

vampire13

That part of your link that is a link (i.e. the bit in blue, up to the
=hpn_1896), works for me!

Linux, SM 2.0.4

Or are you just trying to advertise the film??

Daniel

Not likely, I was looking to download a project for my grandson. I
don't
know where you find a film, since the end file is a PDF. Don't be so
suspicious, I'm 77 and retired with no ambition to advertise anything.
I'm just trying to find out why PDF links crash my Seamonkey.

vampire13

What PDF link?? on that part on the link you provided, I don't see any
mention of PDF!

Daniel

Daniel:

My apologies, I assumed responders would check the "View" and
"Instructions" links next to the images which are the links to PDF files
I should have made that clearer. By now I should know not to "assume"
anything. I certainly can connect to the page but whenever I click on
any of the indicated links Seamonkey crashes and closes. Again, this
only happens in Seamonkey. I can right click and save the target but, I
cannot open the links in my browser.

Ed

Ed, have you got anything set up as a helper to help SM handle PDF's?

Daniel

Good catch Daniel, PDF documents under helpers was set to "always ask" I
reset it to use ADOBE Reader as default and presto, the links now open
in an ADOBE window. The other ADOBE files are set to open the reader in
Seamonkey. I haven't had occasion to test them but, at least I know
where to go if there is a problem.

My thanks to all the good people for their help and suggestions.

It is. I suggest using TinyURL or such to provide one easier to get to
from posts in places like this.

Works for me in SM 2.04 under Windows XP with 4GB RAM, with a caveat
noted below.

Right-click and Save Link As on the View link by each project saves a
PDF locally. Attempting to open it in SeaMonkey invokes Acrobat Reader
to display the PDF.

One thing you might try is a configuration change in Acrobat Reader.
Invoke Acrobat Reader, select Edit/Preferences, and in the Internet page
*uncheck* "Display PDF in browser". Normally, the browser attepts to
call Acrobat Reader as a plugin, and displays the PDF in a tab.
Unchecking that option in Reader makes it open in a new window as a
separate external process.

I formed this habit years back to work around a bug in Acrobat - if it
was called as a plugin from the browser, the Acrobat process remained in
memory, even *after* closing the browser. It's possible Acrobat Reader
no longer has that annoying behavior, but I've felt no need to change
back to the default behavior.

Do that and I think it will fix your crash problem.

Thanks Dennis and Paul for the tips. Dennis, I tried your suggestion in
Reader preferences and while there, I noticed a connect speed dialogue
under Internet which was set at 56K. I don't remember ever seeing that
before. I reset it to LAN.

I shut down and rebooted but find the problem still exists for me.
Neither correction made a difference. The reader never appears, there is
a delay of several seconds and Seamonkey crashes.

You did not say what your pdf viewer is.
I use Foxit and it works great.
Very cool site, btw. Thanks!

You're welcome.

My viewer is ADOBE Reader, latest version. I have no problem opening the
PDF's if I save the link targets to my hard drive.

I went to the exact link shown, and It did not crash. However; I did not
try to go anywhere else in the site.
SM 2.0.4 Mac OSX.4.11 PowerPC 17" 1.67GB Processor 2Gb RAM 80 GB left on
120GB Drive.

I guess it's obvious then that something is not right in my Seamonkey
installation. I have used the Mozilla browsers for years going way back
to the 90's and have not had this kind of trouble. My Seamonkey 1.X's
all performed very well and 2.0 was fine until I upgraded to 2.02. Since
then, I crash on links associated with PDF files and on sites Like Tax
Slayer when trying to access completed tax forms even though entering
the data was not a problem. What annoys me is the need to use the
dreaded IE8 to complete some projects. Hopefully, someone that knows the
inside works of the browser can come up with a suggestion. I have
revisited the links since my first post and the problem remains.
