Seeing other people's "works for me" pushed me to update SM and now that works for me as well! Maybe should I have tried this earlier, but I'm always reluctant to update when everything (well, almost) works.

These are OK (see my OP).

I agree about making things group writable, although if your Linux makes a per-user group it probably doesn't present much of an issue.

Are there distributions doing that, really? That defeats the concept of user group, don't you think?
