I know you can "block images" from a certain domain, but can you tell SM
to never make any kind of request to that domain?

e.g. a domain called ads.com, with servers, x.ads.com, y.ads.com

can you block any request to *.ads.com?

I did that kind of thing with an extension called URL n Extension Block.
You have to run it through the converter to get it to install in
SeaMonkey.

As to SeaMonkey and Thunderbird, things aren’t looking well there.
It’s doubtful that these will have noteworthy Web Extensions
support by November. In fact, it’s not even clear whether they plan
to support Web Extensions at all. And unlike with Firefox Mobile,
we cannot publish a different build for them (Addons.Mozilla.Org
only allows different builds per operating system, not per
application). So our users on SeaMonkey and Thunderbird will be
stuck with an outdated Adblock Plus version.

From what I can tell, ABP plans to switch to the new web extensions
model, which is fine, but SM will not be ready by November. The fault is
not at ABP, but here with us.

As for the threatened "outdated Adblock Plus version," what does that
mean? Security issues? Probably not. Functionality issues? Perhaps.
There's a continual "arms race" between web designers who want to bypass
ABP and serve their ads to unwilling eyeballs and ad-block programmers
who want to do us the great favor of blocking ads. It's not clear at all
how long a gap there will be between the November switch to WE and SM's
upgrade to the new WE model. A few weeks? Months? I can live with a
slightly inferior ad blocker. Years? That's a problem.

For now, the OP can have six months of ad-free life if he wants it,
perhaps more.

Use a 'hosts' file.
One can be found at http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ with instructions.

trivially easy to block all requests to *.ads.com

Works with SeaMonkey too, though the page doesn't say so.
