Can you do a "Search" of the Sent files Folder?

2009-05-02 Thread DoctorBill

My set file list is huge 100's of messages

I want to go back and find some messages with some data in them,
but I don't remember when, to whom, or the title of the messages.
It was a while back.

I'm not goofy (well a little bit, maybe) - it is just that I never
thought I'd be wanting that data ever again.

Can I run a search thru the "Sent Files" folder somehow looking for
certain keywords?

Key words need to be in the subject or senders email address.
You must know what the email was about or who sent it to you.

Then it's the same as any other email folder search.
(Subject or Sender contains _)

I don't think there's any way to search the body of an email.

You should be able to search messages in any folder you select,
including the sent folder.

It will take some work on your part to set this up in your mail account.
To guide you along select your account sent folder, then select the
View drop down box and from that menu select "Customize". On the
Customize dialog box click the Help button and read all about creating a
custom view and how to search within that view. You can search the
message body for the phrase you need.

Ummm, why not just use Tools -> Search Messages?

In the 'Search for messages in' dropdown, you can select your Sent
folder. In the Match entry, you can use the drop-down to select what
part of the message you want to search, including the Subject, the

Searching for Specific Messages

You can search mail folders or newsgroups for specific messages. If you
are not already viewing the Search Messages dialog box, begin from the
Mail window:

   1. Open the Tools menu and choose Search Messages. You see the
Search Messages dialog box.

   2. Next to Search for messages in, choose the account, newsgroup,
or folder through which you want to search.

   3. Select Search subfolders to include all subfolders in the
search.

   4. Select Search local system to search only messages from
newsgroups or IMAP accounts that have been saved locally.

Note: The checkbox will be disabled if it's not
possible to search remotely stored messages.

   5. Select which matching option Mail & Newsgroups will use to
search for messages that match all or at least one of the conditions
(criteria) that you choose.

   6. Use the drop-down lists to indicate the search criteria (for
example, Subject and contains) and then type the text or phrase that
you want to match.

Because once he creates the custom search he can then modify the search
terms for additional searching, and save the modified search as a new
option.

Martin, in your SM-2.0a3, Can you mouse-right-click on the selected
newsgroup-folder, and select the Search Messages entry, or optionally
select the Message-window's Top-toolbar menu "Tools/Search Messages",
and when a "Search Messages" window comes-up, click on the "Subject"
drop-down menu, if there is an entry at the bottom marked "Customise",
then clicking on that should bring-up a small panel where you can
type-in "Body" without the inverted-commas,

and then you should be able to search newsgroup message-bodies that

the news-server bodies.

I'm afraid this doesn't work for me that way. I added like you suggested
but SM dosn't find anything.
But your screenshot made me "suspicious" of the checkbox to search
through the local System. That way all headers are already present in
the dropdown-box. So no more need to add new headers for body etc.

Thanks for clarification :-)

Martin, thanks for the heads-up re: the default Newsgroup
message-body-option (I only just-noticed I now-had 2 instances of "body"
search parameters).

Sorry, I forgot to specifically-mention preselecting "search local system".
Just correcting my error: Message-search will search news-server
message-bodies, if the server permits such searches (None of the
newsgroups I use, permit these searches)

Many useful headers are not in the default options. Info from SM Help
enlarges on this:--
"Tip: To search for messages that contain a header not listed in the
first drop-down menu (for example, if you want to search for messages
that include the header Resent-From), choose Customize and type the
header you want to search for. SeaMonkey Mail & Newsgroups adds your
custom header to the drop-down list, so you can then choose it to search
for matching entries. Make sure you enter the custom header correctly,
since Mail will only find entries that exactly match what you type." Barry.
