multipart/mixed just means that it contains multiple parts that can have
mixed content. The attachments are inside that enclosure and have their
own MIME type.

If you only get "save", then as far as I know, the file type SM thinks
it is is application/octet-stream and those are usually executables. As
it's often dangerous to open executables from remote sources, we don't
allow those to be opened directly, we only allow saving them, as then
Anti-Virus software and operating system security rules can kick in to
make you hopefully safe from trouble.
If the attachment would have some file type set that fits better what's
in it (not sure what's the so-called "MIME type" for Visio), then we
would offer you to select an application, but when it's marked as "some
binary application" (application/octet-stream) then we go with a "better
safe than sorry" strategy.

Thanks Robert,

very clear explanation !
In an example I see a MIME type multipart / mixed though...
anyway, thanks for the details...
and keep on the (very) good work for SM2 !!

Actually my problem is : how do I add a *new* helper application to SM2
? (in this case, to open Visio files with the Visio program).
Side note: No, I am not in a position to influence and change whatever I
get into my mail !!! :-), even if I have my own ideas about MS and its
way to use and decide of "standards" !!

Thanks for any useful pointer

A personal preference (with a nod toward non-lock-in standards):
The longer you keep files in proprietary formats,
the less useful the files are. (Think: Export to .DXF.)

With M$'s track record regarding the 'Net
(first ignoring it then trying to cripple it thru incompatibility),
it's a wonder ANYTHING they produce works in an online mode.
Visio was obiously never meant to work with online apps.

The only vector-based formats I know of that work online
are Flash and .SGV.
