Yes, I did reboot a few times. Occasionally, Windows seems to do things 
on its own. I know that XP is old and not supported, and will get rid of 
it as soon as I can transfer all my data to my newer Windows 7 PC.

Hi Mort, It seems doubtful this second problem is related,
seamonkey/firefox do not even maintain their bookmarks/history
etc in regular files like IE, but rather in sqlite databases.

Did you reboot your machine in between ? Windows explorer is
known to "forget" which icons to display for a given file type,
occasionally (though I have not seen this as much on win7,
but definitely on XP)

Note that the shortcut to invoke the "clear private data"

1.  On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Edit > Preferences].

2.  On the left side of the Preferences window, select [Privacy &
Security > Private Data].

4.  If you always want the history cleared when you termminate
SeaMonkey, also check the checkbox for "Always clear my private data
when I close SeaMonkey" on the Private Data pane.

5.  If you want the data cleared immediately, select the Clear Now
button on the Private Data pane.

NOTE WELL:  "Private data" consists only of those items for which you
already checked checkboxes on the Private Data pane below "When I ask
SeaMonkey to clear my private data, it should erase:".
