While it is a release candidate version, try giving 2.41 a shot.

I used it for a month+ with no issue.

Have they fixed the bug in File Bookmark that is present in 2.40?  That 
dialog box will not change size in 2.40, and I had to force it to be 
longer with code in userChrome.css so that I could read the folder list 
and access the buttons at the bottom at the same time.

and now you are able to post, too.

This definitely looks like a problem with your newsreader, as it starts 
a connection without authenticating,
tries to post and gets an error and then properly authenticates, all on 
the same connection. Also, please note
that it keeps the connection open for 20 seconds despite the error and 
then makes up its mind to use

authentication. As I said, these Thundermonkeys are really weird.
