[Sursound] New book -- Communication acoustics: An introduction to Speech, Audio and Psychoacoustics
Dear Colleague, [sorry if you get this message multiple times] this is to inform that the book Communication acoustics: An introduction to Speech, Audio and Psychoacoustics” by Ville Pulkki and Matti Karjalainen is available as a hardcover and as an ebook from Wiley. The book makes an introduction to the fields which concern some kind of communication channel having the human as listener in the end, the fields together are called as “communication acoustics”. The main fields discussed in the book are: Physics of sound / Signal processing / Human voice and speech / Music instruments and synthesis / Psychoacoustic testing / Psychoacoustic quantities / Spatial hearing / Auditory modeling / Sound reproduction / Time-frequency-domain audio processing / Speech technologies / Sound quality / Technical audiology The book has 456 pages and 250 figures. Its table of contents can be viewed here: http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118866541,subjectCd-PH51.html The book is primarily meant for Msc-level teaching in technical universities, but it also serves as a reference book for professionals in the field. In my university, the book is partially read on the first course in the master program on acoustics and audio technology, after which more detailed courses take place. If you are thinking that the book could be used in your teaching, you can request a copy for evaluation from Wiley. I am planning to publish also the slides that I use in my classes. Re: [Sursound] Oculus Rift Visual Demo + Ambisonic Audio Available?
I downloaded it last week and listened to it a few times, but listening on closed-back headphones (MDR7506) it doesn't work that well for me. Although the horizontal localisation is fine, I don't get any vertical clues. I also find the whole recording rather disorientating - not a pleasant experience, I'm afraid. I take it the LF hum is from a domestic appliance rather than from anywhere else? Unless you are making the assumption that very low bitrate MP3 is the same as 24bit flac, there is nothing to discuss. ___ Sursound mailing list Sursound@music.vt.edu https://mail.music.vt.edu/mailman/listinfo/sursound - unsubscribe here, edit account or options, view archives and so on.

The MDR-7506 headphones are effectively the same as the MDR-V6, so that's probably it. You are too kind:-) I improved my Koss KSC75 with a pad of 8 layers of horticultural fleece under the foam. It flattens the bass a little, and attenuates hf reflections. I don't find binaural demos very effective; and guess what - I use MDR-7506 headphones!
