RE: [biofuel] washing biodiesel in large processor

2004-07-12 Thread Dermot

Hi Todd,

This mixing method you describe looks much easier than bubble washing or
mist washing.
What I intend to do is to use the pump from my reactor vessel to mix the
biodiesel and water. Presumably this is ok?

You emphasise that it is important that the reaction be fully complete.
From what I have been reading on Journeytoforever it seems that the best way
to ensure that is to use the correct amount of lye, i.e. 3.5 or 4 grams plus
titration plus plenty of excess methanol.

I intend doing my first large batch soon (50 litres). It titrates at 2.4 so
I am going to use say 6.4 grams/litre of lye plus 25% methanol to ensure a
complete reaction.

I have read the journeytoforever advice on the different amounts of methanol
to use for different oils but as I am going to recover the methanol I don't
think it matters if I use too much. I presume most of the excess methanol
will end up in the glycerine and not the biodiesel.

I would appreciate your advice on this. Is there anything radically wrong
with what I have proposed above?

Regards,
Dermot

Ardis,

You will find, after enough experimentation and out of pocket costs, that
mechanical agitation in a wash tank is the least expensive, consumes the
least energy, requires the least amount of time and leaves you with a
finished product as good as or better than mist- or bubble-washing.

Plain, pure and simple, mist- and bubble-washing have become
institutionalized amongst home-brewers primarily due to the frequency of
incomplete reactions that lend to washing problems. In short, they are both
methods of treating incomplete reactions with little kid's gloves in the
hopes that any resulting emulsion won't be too bad or too noticeable.

The fact of the matter is that no wash method should be used on any batch
unless it is known for certain that the reaction has completed.
Unfortunately, many people fail to guarantee this for themselves, opting to
just go ahead and wash it gently.

The method of guarantee is extremely simple. Put one ounce of what is
believed to be finished fuel in a baby food jar (or similar) with an equal
amount of water. Seal the jar and shake violently for 15 seconds. Completed
fuel should begin to separate instantly and there should be two distinct
layers in less than ~30 seconds. If it takes longer than this or if an
emulsion layer forms any thicker than the normal paper thin interface
layer between oil and water, you've got a batch that has not completed.

The degree of incompletion can vary. If the fuel/water separate slowly but
are by-and-large complete in a matter of 1-2 minutes and there is no
emulsion layer other than the interface, there's no great need to retreat
the reaction if the fuel is intended for personal use. If you have an
emulsion beyond the thin interface layer the batch needs to be retreated. No
amount of light mist- or bubble-washing can change this - unless, of course,
you don't care what grade of fuel you run through your engine.

The wash test and mechanical washing (motor, prop and shaft) work well no
matter what method you use - acid/base or straight base, single or double
stage.

Some concern has been expressed in the past over the use of air to dry fuel,
the concern being fuel oxidation. It's beyond me why those who express such
concern (and rightfully so) don't say word one about bubble washing doing
the exact same thing.

Others express concern with pump- or prop-washed fuel not clearing as
quickly as mist- or bubble-washed. There's sound reason for this, all things
being equal. Pumps and propellers have the ability of better mixing the fuel
and water (atomizing it), bringing both in more frequent contact with each
other. This means greater surface to surface contact between water molecules
and all suspended/dissolved impurities. Fifteen minutes with a 1/2 hp motor
and 4 - 6 prop in a 200 gallon wash tank or bigger will achieve the same
thing or more as an all-day-affair with a mist- or bubble-washer. This
allows for hours of washing time to be converted to settling time, in turn
hastening the entire wash process.

Anyway, when all is said and done and no matter what wash method you choose,
you'll best serve your own interests if you make sure that your reaction is
complete before attempting any type of wash. All bubble- and mist-washing
tend to do is offer brewers the opportunity to wash an incompletely reacted
batch with one eye closed and sometimes the other eye squinted.

I agree with L. You will have to start your own activist group most likely.
Most of America does not know about bio fuels yet. I encourage you to take a
short ride to the Boston area the last week of July. You will likely find lots
of people interested in learning about bio fuels. No one realizes how simply
great this can be. Most people still think this is a pie in the sky dream. We
will have to tell them different, and then SHOW them how easy and true this
really is. Maybe some one has a small portable unit that they can take to
Boston and show off.

That goes for any one who wants to travel down this way. July and August are

  Hello,

intend to take this trip!, and I'll be going from DC to Maine and then back
to California, taking Interstate 80 back. My partner and I are driving a
couple of vans back here which he and another friend had purchased on eBay
(it's a bit difficult to find a cheap diesel van in California these days),
and I got drafted to help get one of the vehicles running.

ANyway, this July trip is somewhat of an accident, and cuts into my
planning for my 'real' biodiesel class tour at the end of the summer/fall
(details coming up shortly). In my quest to fund the fall class tour, and
since I'll be missing work to do this July thing, I'm once again offering
to build biodiesel processors for people along the route of my trip (same
offer applies to my travels in the fall):

The processors would be the water heater-based Biodiesel Appleseed reactors
from www.veggieavenger.com/media , which in general I encourage you all to
  build yourselves (it's easy).

However if you want a processor built for you, and you are 'along the way'
of the route of my July trip, I'll build you one for the cost of parts and
$200 for labor, which will go into funding my August-November biodiesel
class tour (ie taking my own vehicle, a reactor and a bunch of other gear
on the road from August through November and teaching classes).

The total cost for these units including my labor charge is either $380
or $580 depending on whether you can find a free used electric water heater
or whether you have to buy a brand new one (they're about $200 usually). If
you can find a closed-head barrel somewhere, I'll throw in a wash tank for
  the same cost.

I'll be putting together a list of the fall classes tonight and emailing it
out. Some of those class dates are also for 'equipment building' classes,
which are opportunities for participants to build their own reactor.

Progessives Unite at Democracy Fest!
July 07, 2004

Dear Jennifer,

Progressive Vote is working at the grassroots level to
unite the many progressive groups. Many of us have
come forward as a progressive activist from the Dean
and Kucinich campaigns of 2004 and the Nader 2000
campaign. We are forwarding information on activities
in which these unity events are taking place.
Progressive Vote is proud to be a part of
DemocracyFest.

On July 24-25, 2004, DemocracyFest will be held at
the Butternut Basin Ski resort in Great Barrington,
Massachusetts. Attendees can camp in this
picturesque setting-only an hour and a half from
Bradley International Airport, Connecticut, and two
hours away from Boston, Massachusetts.

~
About the Fest
The festival is designed to unite progressive-minded
people, improve their political knowledge, celebrate
the historic Dean campaign, and plan for our
future. This will all be accomplished through
motivational speakers, informative workshops, and
great entertainment. Our keynote speaker is Gov.
Howard Dean, MD. National and regional acts are also
donating their talents. Acts speakers are being
added often at www.myvoteismyvoice.com

Dear Jennifer,

Progressive Vote and Progressive Democrats of
America are joining with various social justice groups
and organizations to coordinate diverse events
around different themes and issues not currently
reflected in the Democratic Party. There will be
workshops, speakers, and street actions intended to

Re: [biofuel] How's Come Berkely is the Hot Bed of Forward Thinking.

2004-07-12 Thread Jennifer Doty

That sounds great. Sounds like you are a good man for this job! Do you have a
portable unit you could demonstrate on? Make some fuel in front of their eyes,
then pour it straight into a diesel truck, and drive it around in front of
them. Then there can be no question or doubt. That may be to much to try to
do, or take to long but it would be awesome! People would not stop talking
about it, and that's the idea. Get them talking, interested, amazed, and
convinced; bio fuels are an answer to our fuel and energy problems.

Thank you, Jennifer

  Dear Jennifer et al.

  I'll bite.

I've been making biodiesel for three years, I'm well into my second
back porch refinery, and I've addressed a number of large groups--DOE
conferences on down. I'm on my way to NBB next week in D.C., and I
have done some legislative work on biodiesel in North Carolina.

As for Berkley having the corner (can't say I haven't learned a lot
from those folks), at Piedmont Biofuels we have three people who are
overwhelmed by education and outreach activities at this point.

  Can travel.

Hello Phil, Martin, and the rest of bio fuel members.

I am new to the group, and I just recently learned about bio fuels
myself. I know I have already told a dozen or so folks about them
as well. I have not gotten the two headed look, but most people are
skeptical of what they don't know. It's like they don't want to
believe something could be so simple. I am quick to tell them that
Big Business, and our own government, are the main reason's no one
knows about this. That alone gets half the people I know
interested then it is not just a bunch of PhD's dreaming, it is
a reality and a conspiracy. For some reason this makes bio fuels
more creditable to most people I talk to. I am not an authority or
expert, but I would like to learn more. I think the rest of the
U.S. would like to know also. The last weekend of July many
progressive, forward thinking, intelligent people will be converging
in and around Boston. This will be a prime opportunity to tell
others about bio fuels. I mentioned it to a few event leaders, and
they were wanting some people to give a talk or discussion. The
Progressive Summit will be the week before the DNC Convention in
Boston. Kevin Spidel was wanting to know if some one would be
interested in addressing the group, and also the Democracy Fest 2004
will be the same weekend, about two hours from Boston, Jessica
Falker is the main organizer of that event. They are still looking
for forward thinking activist to enlighten the crowds. I am not
qualified to discuss what I am just beginning to learn about, but I
am trying to spark interest in others, and trying to learn more
myself. If you think you could give a presentation at either event
please let me know. Or just go down for the weekend, have some fun,
and talk to as many people as you can. I'll attach a copy of an
email I have been sending out to people I know, in case you are
interested, or in case you can enlighten me more.
P.S. sorry my first post is so long, promise I won't do this often.
   --- Jennifer Doty

   Hello All,

I read a recent article about energy independence. I am very
glad to see some people touching on this subject. I would like to
see more in-depth articles, that really show the citizens of the
U.S. how screwed up our current administration is. For a long time
we have known about the green house effect, the poisons we are
putting into our environment, and the face that we will be running
out of Oil world wide. What I don't understand is why so many of us
think that there is nothing simple we can do about it. Very few
people in America know that we can produce clean fuels, that will
power our cars with almost no change to our current engines and fuel
systems. I did not know until I got into a discussion with my
father. We don't need to buy expensive hybrid cars, and we don't
need fossil fuels. I think that this information is deliberately
not being talked about, because then George W. would loose all
remaining support for his war with Iraq, and would stand to loose a
   few billion himself.
This needs to be brought out and discussed. The Democracy
Festival 2004 (Deanfest), and the Democratic Convention will be a
good place to start discussing this with lots of other like minded,

[biofuel] A Good Example

2004-07-12 Thread Chris McKay

I was cruising around for Canadian biodiesel sites (especially in the
Vancouver area), and I found this one;

http://www.eya.ca/biodiesel/

I found it especially interesting because the company I work for (Methanex)
donates methanol to this project (and I didn't even know it!)

I find it nice that there is project close to home that is working well.

Chris

Re: [biofuel] Integrated processing of lignocellulosic biomass!

2004-07-12 Thread pan ruti

I have done Phd work (1978-1982), pilotplant designed , now
constructed. at IIT Delhi, based on my laboratory work on catalytic low
temperature(120)acidos , alkalineetanol e water delignification process
leading to good seperation of celulose , hemicelluso e lignin and very high
enzymatic hydrolysis of treated fibers.
Biomass ethanol with this process has great role to play in the next few years
together with biodeisel.I will be very glad to s«hare the process details for
decentralised biofuel process developments

Hello Hans

Acid Catalyzed Organosolv Saccharification (ACOS). This unique, high
pressure, high temperature, closed loop, pulping process has been developed
and patented by chemist Dr. Laszlo Paszner (Paszner Technologies, Inc., of
Surrey, B.C.) of the University of British Columbia. Although it is
adaptable to Alaskan species, both hardwoods and softwoods, the process has
yet to be proved commercial for the Alaskan environment.

Or for any environment I believe. Paszner and ACOS have been
discussed here before. See:
