India Orders Arrest of American in Bhopal Gas Leak

by Nirmala George

Survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster beat an effigy of former chief
executive of Union Carbide Corp. Warren Anderson, in Bhopal, India,
Friday, July 31, 2009. News reports say that a court in Bhopal,
capital of Madhya Pradesh state, has issued a warrant for the arrest
of Anderson in connection with the deadly gas leak nearly 25 years
ago which killed around 12,000 people and left thousands of others
injured. The court asked the federal government to press for
Anderson's extradition to face trial in India. (AP Photo/Prakash

NEW DELHI - An Indian court issued a warrant Friday for the arrest of
the former head of the American chemical company responsible for a
gas leak that killed at least 10,000 people in Bhopal 25 years ago.

Warren Anderson was the head of Union Carbide Corp. when its factory
in the central Indian city leaked 40 tons of poisonous gas on Dec. 3,
1984 - the world's worst industrial disaster.

More than 555,000 people who survived the initial disaster are
thought to have suffered aftereffects, though the exact number of
victims has never been determined. Many have died over the years from
gas-related illnesses, like lung cancer, kidney failure and liver
disease.

On Friday, in response to a recent appeal by a victims' group,
Prakash Mohan Tiwari ordered the arrest of Anderson, who is
reportedly living in the U.S. Tiwari, who is the chief judicial
magistrate of Bhopal, also ordered the federal government to press
Washington for the American's extradition.

Anderson was arrested immediately after the disaster, but he left the
country soon after. The Indian government has since said that it did
not know where he was, but CNN-IBN television recently reported he is
in the Hamptons - a wealthy area outside New York.

In Bhopal, victims and civil rights activists who gathered outside
the court cheered at the news of the order. They threw slippers at an
effigy of Anderson and hit it with brooms, as they danced in the
streets.

In 1989, Union Carbide paid $470 million in compensation to the
Indian government and said officials were responsible for the
cleanup. Victims accuse New Delhi of delaying distribution of the
funds.

The government says its efforts were slowed when Nidland,
Michigan-based Dow Chemical Co. took over Union Carbide in 2001,
seven years after Union Carbide sold its interest in the Bhopal
plant. Meanwhile, Dow maintains that the 1989 settlement resolved the
legal case.

hotspots, such as the ones associated with the CaMV 35S
promoter and the left and right borders of the Agrobacterium T-DNA used as
vector to introduce transgenic DNA into the plant genome. These
recombination hotspots enhance horizontal gene transfer and recombination.
Furthermore, as Veljkovic said, the recombination hotspots in transgenic DNA
may interact with the recombination signals flanking the V3 loop of the
gp120 gene in AIDS vaccines to generate yet more exotic viruses.”

[Biofuel] Big price rise for WA users of renewable energy

2009-08-01 Thread Tony

Hi Folks
I usually Lurk and read the posts
but this has got me so worked up I found I had to post

Recently I had a 1kw Solar power System installed on my roof
as the Australian Govt was offering an 8000$ Rebate towards the system
the total cost to me was 2490 $ AU

I have also been using 100% green power for over 3 years
those of us who would like to be environmentally conscious can Request
our Grid power is scoured from sustainable sources
at an extra cost of approx 30$ per 2 months for the Privilege of using
Green power About 1 month ago the state Govt put up the power costs
for Grid Power ( Across the Board) from 14.7 cents per unit to 17.9
cents per unit ( 1000 w)
with more rises to be expected so now we who want to do the right thing
will have to pay an extra 1.7 cents per unit just because the Western
Australian Govt says
it needs to invest more into sustainable infrastructure

all the while those using dirty power ( Coal or Oil or gas ) dont
have to pay any extras
for polluting the planet only the Green power users do

If you are so inclined Please could some of our Boffin's in the
group email our state Govt
and also point out the error of their ways emails from People around
the world might just
prompt them into feeling a little ashamed of just how little they
care about those who try to do the right thing

Big price rise for WA users of renewable energy

Article from: PerthNow

EXCLUSIVE: The cost of renewable energy will rise significantly
tomorrow with WA customers paying nearly twice what they paid six months ago.

Government-run energy retailer Synergy has increased the price of
every green power option they provide, outraging environmental groups
and users of renewable energy.

The move comes just weeks after Murdoch University energy economist
Adam McHugh warned that if the state continued to favour dirty
industry over renewable projects,
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,25786365-5017320,00.htmlconsumers

would pay.

Synergy says the price increase reflect the cost of supplying green
energy to WA.

While the fuel sources of renewable energy are inexpensive, the
other costs associated with it are not, including the initial
infrastructure cost, network costs, back-up generation and the like
which are factors in the full cost of renewable energy, Synergy head
of corporate affairs Andrew Gasper said.

Solar energy producer for Wise Earth - and Order of Australia
recipient - Garry Baverstock said the unsubstantiated and
unpublicised price hike was sending shock waves through the renewable
energy sector and supporters of green energy initiatives.

While Synergy customers are still coming to terms with the recent 25
per cent price rise that took place on 1 April and 1 July
respectively, people buying green energy are soon to be slugged with
up to a further 20 per cent price hike, Mr Baverstock said.

Synergy offered three main green options to residential consumers,
including blocks of green energy called EasyGreen, NaturalPower where
you pay extra for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) and Earth Friendly which
allows you to offset carbon released by consuming coal or gas fired
alternatives.

Blocks of green power valued at $30 on an EasyGreen plan were worth
682kWh, but as of tomorrow customers will receive only 492kWh for the
same money.

If you are on a NaturalPower plan you are currently paying an extra
4.4 cents per kilowatt hour and as tomorrow you will be paying 6.1
cents per kilowatt-hour, Mr Baverstock said.

If anything, there should be no difference in whether a person wants
to buy renewable or non-renewable power.

WA is currently one of the dirtiest states in the nation.
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,25575572-5017320,00.htmlJust
3.8 per cent of WA's energy is generated from renewable sources.
