[Biofuel] Thanks to Lyle

2005-01-04 Thread Eric & Wendy

Just got back from visiting some friends in Hillsboro, NC and decided to
stop by Piedmont Biofuels Coop. I just want to thanks Lyle for giving me a
tour of the facility and enlightening me as I try to figure out how to start
the Susquehanna Biodiesel Coop in Central PA. I understand that all of the
mover and shakers in our biodiesel world will be at Central Carolina
Community College on January 28 and 29th for a conference. I hope to make a
return to NC for the conferenceÑweather permitting and my husband agreeing
to watch our three year old for the weekend. I really value the camaraderie
among us Ògrease users.Ó It reminds me of my Macintosh buddiesÑalways
willing to help. Once I get some experience under my belt, I look forward to
helping the Ònewbies.Ó

[Biofuel] TDI Question

2004-12-19 Thread Eric & Wendy

Hi Everyone!

I am a station wagon kind of mom. I don't want to drop a lot of money on a
"new" car, so purchasing a new Jetta or Passat wagon TDI is out of the
question. Finding a used TDI wagon is very hard. I found some gasoline
Passat wagons on auto trader for under $10,000. Could I purchase one of them
and put a diesel engine in it? Is it physically possible? Does it make
financial sense? Thanks!

[Biofuel] Supply List

2004-12-16 Thread Eric & Wendy

Hi Everyone!

Thanks to those who replied to my last e-mail. I appreciate the
encouragement!

IÕve heard some rumors about the upcoming winter in the NortheastÑa huge
blizzard and black outs. I was wondering if someone could suggest the items
I might need to stock up on just in case we are snowed in for a week. Where
does one get a back up generator? Is that used for electrical appliances? I
know that its really common sense items like toilet paper, food, water,
candles, batteries with flashlights, extra bottle of prescription medicines.
But what happens when you canÕt heat your house or you have no electricity?
How do you protect your pipes from exploding?

Thanks!

believe how ÒniceÓ the exhaust from my TDI smells! Sorry, I just had to
share my excitement with the group! I feel like a kid on Christmas day! IÕve
been part of this group for almost two years. I finally got a TDI at the end
of October and now my goal is to start home brewing beginning the first of
the year! My family thinks I am nuts, but I donÕt care!

[biofuel] Response I got from PA Dept. of Environmental Protection

2004-03-23 Thread Eric & Wendy

I recently wrote a letter of inquiry to the PA Department of Environmental
Protection seeing if the Commonwealth is implementing Bio Diesel. Here is
the response for anyone on the list who cares about Bio Diesel and
Pennsylvania! Can anyone on the list address the concern of air pollution
with B20?

Thanks!

Wendy,
Your e-mail was forwarded to my attention. I am pleased to inform you that
the state has extensive knowledge on the use of biofuels, namely biodiesel
and ethanol. The biofuel in common use is B20 (a blend of 20% soybean oil
with 80% diesel fuel). The soybean meets the ASTM (American Society for
Testing and Materials) standards for quality. I listed below, some of the
activities underway in PA:

1) We have been convening a Biomass Task Force to discuss promoting these
fuels throughout the state.
2) The Turnpike Commission uses B20 in their truck fleet in the Southeast
and will be using B20 in the western end of the turnpike.
3) PennDOT conducted a pilot project with B20, but is not using it because
of the added cost.
4) Departments of Environmental Protection and General Services discussed
specification necessary to place B20 on the state contract.
5) Recent legislation drafted and supported by DEP includes a subsidy for
school districts who use B20 in their buses.

Two primary reasons for the slow introduction of biodiesel are : 1) the
added cost of the fuel and 2) concern of air pollution. Currently,
biodiesel adds close to $.20 to the cost of diesel blends of B20. DEP is
also aware that one of the ozone precursors regulated under the Clean Air
Act, oxides of nitrogen or NOx, is emitted in higher amounts when biodiesel
is combusted in diesel engines. While the increase may only be 2 - 5% in
B20 blends, the emissions of this pollutant increases radically with B100.
The biodiesel industry is aware of this concern and has been developing an
additive.

As for making B20 available to the public, it is not likely that gasoline
and diesel station operators will be willing to dispense biodiesel without
assurances that it will be economically feasible.

The state will continue to promote biofuels and as gasoline and diesel
prices continue to increase, it is possible that the added costs for using
B20 will grow smaller.

Thank you for integers.

[biofuel] How many miles can you put on a diesel engine?

2004-03-10 Thread Eric & Wendy

I came across a 2001 VW Golf tdi on Ebay with approx.
280,000 miles. I was
wondering since the car is only three years old and in relatively good
shape, would it be a bad investment? My husband (oh those husbands) says it
has too many miles on it for his liking. He is afraid he is going to have to
dump more money in to the car than what it“ worth. It“ on e-bay right now
and there is no reserve. The current bid is $3,500. I thought it would be a
good deal if I could get it for $4,000. Any thoughts? When do you get rid of
car to get another one? We currently have a 1991 Honda Civic Station Wagon
with 130,000. It seems like for the last two years we–e put $2000 in order
for it to pass inspection!

[biofuel] News article in NY Times about diesel cars

2003-11-22 Thread Eric & Wendy

Too bad they didnÕt mention that a diesel engineÕs saving grace is that it
needs to run on biofuel, not diesel fuel. We need to educate and encourage
folks to buy a diesel engine and run it on biofuel. Someone needs to make it
available at the pump everywhere to make it a viable alternative for those
folks who are not into home brewing.

Energy Bill Would Welcome Back Diesels
By DANNY HAKIM

Published: November 22, 2003

DETROIT, Nov. 21 - Twenty-five years after diesel cars largely disappeared
from American highways in a black cloud of tailpipe exhaust, the energy bill
whose fate is hanging in the Senate invites a much cleaner incarnation back.
These so-called advanced diesels would be eligible for tax credits equal to
those in the bill for alternative-fuel vehicles and gas-electric hybrids.

Environmental groups say that the new generation of diesels will still be
too dirty to merit tax breaks but they view credits for cleaner technologies
like hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells as one of the few things to like about
the bill. Over all, they say, the energy bill will increase the nation's
automotive oil consumption.

Automakers see the provision, as well as the energy bill at large, as a
victory. Several automakers - particularly those based in Europe, where
millions of diesels are sold each year - view diesels as the most viable way
to cut Americans' swelling oil consumption.

"We definitely support it and are very pleased, from the language we've
seen," said Kathleen Graham, a spokeswoman for DaimlerChrysler. "We think we
should encourage all advanced technologies with tax credits and not just one
because right now there's not a clear winner," she added.

But Dan Becker, an energy expert at the Sierra Club, said many of the
vehicles that would receive diesel credits would not even meet the minimum
standards in California, which sets more stringent air quality standards
than the federal government.

"We don't need diesels," he said. "For them to share a tax credit meant to
benefit clean cars like hybrids is appalling."

The Joint Committee on Taxation forecasts that tax credits for advanced
technology and alternative-fuel vehicles will cost more than $2.2 billion
from 2004 to 2013. The committee did not break down the cost of credits for
diesels versus hybrids and other technologies.

After the oil shocks of the 1970's, diesels had a period of modest
popularity in the United States. But as gas prices receded, consumers grew
tired of the smoke and smells associated with the engines, as well as
quality problems with some diesel offerings from General Motors.

In recent years, automakers have been exploring technologies to clean up
diesels, to try to meet tightening emissions and fuel economy regulations in
Europe and with an eye to reintroducing diesel engine cars in the United
States.

China, the world's fastest-growing market for automobile sales, is also
poised to impose fuel economy standards more stringent than those in the
United States.

Even some regulators said they thought diesels might be useful in meeting
the goals of using less oil while also reducing pollution. "I think it's
part of the solution,'' Alan Lloyd, chairman of the California Air Resources
Board, said in a recent interview. "The more I see these things, I don't
know that there's any magic bullet."

Environmentalists are not convinced that diesel can ever be as clean as
gasoline.

Current diesel technology presents trade-offs. Diesels still emit
considerably more smog-forming pollutants like nitrogen oxides, volatile
organic chemicals and soot than comparable gasoline cars do. But diesels
also improve fuel economy by 30 to 40 percent and reduce oil consumption by
about 15 percent, reducing emissions that many scientists link to global
warming.

For instance, the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta with a four-cylinder gasoline engine
and an automatic transmission emits 7.9 to 11.8 pounds of smog-forming
pollutants every 15,000 miles, according to data from the Environmental
Protection Agency. But a comparable car with a diesel engine emits at least
43.7 pounds of pollutants.

On the other hand, the gasoline Jetta gets average combined city and highway
mileage of 26 miles a gallon and emits 7.4 tons of greenhouse gases a year,
compared with 5.5 tons and 38 m.p.g. for the diesel.

The types of advanced diesel vehicles that would be eligible for credits
under the energy bill would have new filtration technologies that greatly
narrow the pollutant gap with gasoline cars.

"Obviously, it could help kick-start the return of diesels to the U.S.,"
said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum,
referring to the energy bill. His group is financed by automakers, diesel
engine makers and oil companies. "Gas cars don't offer the 20 to 40 percent
fuel economy gains that y

[biofuel] What Greenercars.com has to say about Bio Fuel

2003-10-29 Thread Eric & Wendy

Hello everyone!

I just went to greenercars.com to see what was on there and I found this
paragraph and was outraged!

http://www.greenercars.com/gctext.html#everyone

Bi- and Flex-Fuel Vehicles

A number of automakers are now offering vehicles with bi-fuel capability,
meaning the ability to run on either an alternative fuel or gasoline. For
example, some pickup trucks can be set to run on compressed natural gas
(CNG) or gasoline, depending on what fuel is available to the driver.
Flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs) can automatically detect the fuel put into the
tank, typically an alcohol-gasoline blend such as E85 or M85 (85 percent
ethanol or methanol, respectively, with 15 percent gasoline).

ACEEE's Green Book¨ does not provide listings for bi- and flex-fuel vehicles
since their environmental performance is not generally different than that
of their gasoline-only counterparts. In terms of tailpipe emissions, a
bi-fuel CNG vehicle may be cleaner when running on CNG than when running on
gasoline. Some FFVs may be cleaner when running on their alternative fuel,
but in practice this rarely happens. Some automakers are making FFVs widely
available to the general market in a number of models. But since alternative
fuels (such as E85) are available in very few locationsÑmany FFV drivers do
not even know of their vehicles' alternative fuel capabilityÑFFVs are
operated almost exclusively with gasoline. Nevertheless, automakers are
getting higher credits toward their fuel economy requirements with every FFV
they sell. Ironically, such sales are causing more pollution overall because
of the corresponding decrease in fleetwide fuel economy. Thus, the
availability of FFVs, while perhaps well intentioned, is resulting in higher
nationwide gasoline consumption, higher oil dependence, and worse global
warming pollution than would otherwise occur.

Is this all true?

Re: [biofuel] New to the list

2003-10-02 Thread Eric & Wendy

Hello!

My name is Wendy Adams. I am 38 years old and a stay-at-home mom. Both my
husband and I own 1991 Honda Civic Hatchbacks. His is two door. Mine is the
four door station wagon. In the near future we will need to purchase another
car and I would like that car to be environmentally friendly.

IÕve enjoyed being part of your list serve and I am very excited to learn
about BioFuel. I am afraid that my husband and I are not knowledgeable about
engines what so ever and that if we go the route of BioFuel we would be
lost. Is there a ÒBio FuelÓ car club in the Harrisburg, PA area that we
could join? I was also thinking of going the route of buying a VW Jetta
station wagon diesel and just using a fuel additive that I saw on the
internet called Ethos Fuel Reformulator http://www.ethosfr-media.com/.

Would appreciate any guidance!
