[biofuel] Bio-weapon..?!?

2003-11-18 Thread Paul B.Schmidt

I heard from a small producer that it is actually illegal to mix the
lye and methanol as you technically get a bio-weapon...
Sodium-Meth-hydroxide. They noted it was apparently used in WW1 as a
low end chemical weapon. Anybody heard that or worried about this? THE
MAN gonna come down and shut you down as you don't have an expensive
license to make all this stuff? Also wondering how many people actually
use a resporator or just rely on good ventilation. How much exposer
will lead to bleeding ulcers of the thorax..? Any? Lots? If I set up a
still in my basement, would the vapors be noticable if I had an exhaust
system set up to blow out the basement window while mixing? My garage
is uninsulated and unheated and so making anything out in that would
involve a good deal of weatherizing. Any thoughts on basement vs garage
processors?

Just wondering.

Re: [biofuel] Bio-weapon..?!?

2003-11-18 Thread Keith Addison

Hello Paul

I heard from a small producer that it is actually illegal to mix the
lye and methanol as you technically get a bio-weapon...
Sodium-Meth-hydroxide.

Sodium methoxide. Or potassium methoxide.

They noted it was apparently used in WW1 as a
low end chemical weapon.

Maybe a chemical weapon, not a bio-weapon. Sounds to me like a bit of
an apocryphal tale, maybe it's true. This kind of stuff is
uncontrollable anyway, anyone with a mind to it can wreak immense
damage with stuff you can find in a kitchen, a supermarket, a
hardware store, a farmer's shed. A gasoline station.

Anybody heard that or worried about this? THE
MAN gonna come down and shut you down as you don't have an expensive
license to make all this stuff? Also wondering how many people actually
use a resporator or just rely on good ventilation.

Neither of those are good solutions, the best (only) solution is not
to make fumes in the first place. Use a closed processor. Mix the
methoxide in an HDPE carboy and use a small air-pump (aquarium-type)
to pump it directly into the closed processor. No fumes. See Safety:

How much exposer
will lead to bleeding ulcers of the thorax..? Any? Lots?

Knowing that you're getting no exposure which will lead to no
bleeding ulcers of the thorax is surely best.

If I set up a
still in my basement,

A still? That's for ethanol, you mean a biodiesel processor?

would the vapors be noticable if I had an exhaust
system set up to blow out the basement window while mixing? My garage
is uninsulated and unheated and so making anything out in that would
involve a good deal of weatherizing. Any thoughts on basement vs garage
processors?

It seems you have options. Lucky you - there are those who make it in
the bathroom because they have nowhere else. You could just insulate
the processor instead of weatherising the whole garage. Mark says she
wraps four inches of bubblewrap round her processor.

Best

Keith
