Hello Mark,
In the United States vehicles classified by fuel types may be researched
in new sales records and sometimes through registration requirements.
Also, it is possible for research assistants that staff small business
centers run by universities or governments to assist you and guide a
person in their research efforts. These services are usually free. And
now I am hearing about organizations that perform these studies as
"feasibility groups" for a fee and I would imagine that they utilize
similar resources and share their results with their networked
associates. You might consider first your local government records,
then a regional area, and then a national estimate of several reported
areas to find out how many vehicles can use your projected product.
(And please also consider if this report may be "colored" to suit the
needs of the person making the report.")
Questions you may have could be as follows:
1. How many vehicles are registered in my area that could use my
product?
2. Is there a historical record of this product being used?
3. What are the sales projections for a new industry that plans to use
a compatible technology and that can use my product?
4. What inexpensive or "free" sources of motivation and awareness are
available for the introduction of my product? (i.e. newspaper articles,
flyers posted at strategic locations, radio news, community fairs,
tradeshows, etc.)
5. Where can I find resources for producing my product (physical and
feedstock)? Consider alternatives to various feedstock and local
agricultural reciprocity. Rural economic development can be greatly
impacted for your particular area. Ultimately the project should
favorable impact the growers as well and make good sense for
environmental concerns on every level from dropping the seed in the
ground to conserving fuel use.
6. Is it more reasonable to build my own facility from scratch or
should I consider a ready-made system? (Time, skill, and money being
considered)
7. How do I intend to distribute my product? Whole or blended?
Bottled or pumped? Local or transported?
8. Do I have access to resources for each level of involvement? If
not, who does and where are they? Should I encourage others or simply
look for people with a similar interest or available resources to join
me considering awareness and education potential as well as available
time?
9. How and where can I network with local people with a similar
interest? Is it feasible for us to form a cooperative? How far do we
want to carry the process in production, feedstock generation,
distribution? And therefore, how large of a group will we need to make
an impact locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. (Keep it
simple for your local area once you have learned the basic techniques
and feel comfortable with your production abilities, then you can better
evaluate your time and investment commitment as well as your human
resource need.)
10. What are my goals? Once you write out your goals you can write out
the steps needed to fulfill those goals.
Because there are numerous market niches to be addresses and many levels
of cooperation involved, your research will help you write your business
plan outline. Then it becomes a punch list. Perhaps you will decide to
simply take care of yourself and grow slowly as friends and neighbors
join in by observing your example. OR you could start with a larger
picture and shoot for a greater goal. We will post some of this list in
our newsletters. You are welcome to contact me as you please and the
biofuels archives has a great deal of information that can help.
Best wishes,
Peggy

Subject: [Biofuel] Help about biodiesel??
I am researching a project on biodiesel in Ireland. What I am looking at
is
identifing what needs to be done (fiscal incentives, grants, research
support, financial support etc..) to develop the market for biodiesel in
Ireland, with particular reference to rapeseed, using the experience of
other countries to make my case. If anyone could be of any help at all I
would really appreciate it.
