[svg-developers] Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer

2006-09-05 Thread Paton J. Lewis
Adobe has decided to discontinue support for Adobe SVG Viewer. There
are a number of other third-party SVG viewer implementations in the
marketplace, including native support for SVG in many Web browsers.
The SVG language and its adoption in the marketplace have both matured
to the point where it is no longer necessary for Adobe to provide an
SVG viewer.

SVG is an established vector image format. Adobe currently supports
SVG in several of its authoring and server products, including
Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, Version Cue, Graphics Server,
FrameMaker, and FrameMaker Server.

Adobe customer support for Adobe SVG Viewer will be discontinued on
January 1, 2007.

For more information on this decision and answers to questions about
the discontinuation of Adobe SVG Viewer, please see

Jon,

Thank you for your thoughtful email. Adobe is collecting feedback on
this announcement, and the decision makers are considering the
points that you and others have made.

[svg-developers] Adobe extends ASV download availability indefinitely

2006-12-15 Thread Paton J. Lewis
In response to customer feedback, Adobe has extended download
availability once again for Adobe SVG Viewer.

Adobe does not currently have plans to remove Adobe SVG Viewer from
the Adobe.com download area. Adobe recognizes that customers have
built Web applications that depend on ASV being available for
download, and although Adobe does not plan to develop ASV further, we
plan for the existing versions to be available for download as long
as our customers rely on them.

For the official announcement, please see http://www.adobe.com/svg/

Domenico,

Unfortunately not. The only thing that has changed with this
announcement is that Adobe Customer Support will field support cases
for the existing Adobe SVG Viewer for an additional year, until
January 1, 2009. There will be no further releases of Adobe SVG
Viewer.

Jeff,

Unfortunately that's not quite correct. Adobe SVG Viewer 2.0 shipped
with Acrobat and Acrobat Reader 5.x, but no version of Adobe SVG
Viewer ships with Acrobat or Adobe Reader 6 or higher.

There was a bug in the Adobe SVG Viewer Windows installer which
prevented installation on Windows XP systems even when the user had
administrator privileges. In this case the installer incorrectly
identified the user as not being an administrator. This bug existed in
Adobe SVG Viewer installers 1.0 through 3.01, and 6.0 PR1.

This bug was fixed in the Adobe SVG Viewer 3.02 installer, which is
available here: http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/

We would be happy to receive feedback on how we can make the Adobe
Reader more useful to you. To make sure your request goes to the right
place, please fill out this on-line form: http://www.adobe.com/

Unfortunately the EULA for Adobe SVG Viewer does not permit this. If
the latest installer of Adobe SVG Viewer (version 3.02) does not
address your problem, then please contact customer support and we may
be able to provide further assistance.

None. Adobe SVG Viewer only shipped with Acrobat Reader 5. Adobe SVG

[svg-developers] Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03 for Windows

2005-05-03 Thread Paton J. Lewis
Adobe has just released Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03 for Windows.

Version 3.03 of Adobe SVG Viewer is an update provided by Adobe to
fix a potential secuirty risk on Windows computers. In addition, the
ActiveX control has been signed in order to allow users to avoid the
ActiveX security warning introduced with Windows XP Security Pack 2.

Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03 addresses a potential security risk in the
ActiveX control whereby a malicious web page could determine whether
or not a file with a particular name exists on the user's computer.
However, the contents of the file could not be viewed via this
vulnerability, and directory listings could not be obtained.

Adobe recommends that users of Adobe SVG Viewer 3.02 or earlier
upgrade to Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03. It is available for download here:

http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/

This can happen in certain situations when the user has a dual-boot
system with two flavors of Windows. Please make sure you uninstall
previous versions of Adobe SVG Viewer from both operating systems
before trying to upgrade.

If you already have a delivery system in place which can execute files
on those machines, the Adobe SVG Viewer 3 installer will run without
requiring user intervention if the installation succeeds.
