Further to my last, I have now received a useful tip from the author of
HTML-Kit which may resolve the problem reported below, viz:

 Unchecking Edit|Preferences|Preview|Refresh preview instead of
reloading may also help.

Regards to all,

CPKS

Hi CPKS,

I like HTMLKit and have used it for HTML development, but have never
gotten SVG to work in it. I tried again today, thinking maybe progress
had been made since last time I tried. It was able to point HTML-Kit at
a file and open it. I was then able to preview. But as soon as I made
the slightest change, HTML-Kit either ignored it and broke the preview
or complained of a syntax error and tried to view the document as HTML.
Is there some configuration I am missing?

Great question! I start off with Inkscape, which I think is excellent.
Once the SVG is largely as I want it, I edit by hand and maybe optimize
using some home-grown tools.

HTML-Kit is really good on Windows; although it uses IE as its rendering
engine, if you have the Adobe plugin installed it will give excellent
feedback. I've been using HTML-Kit for years, the developer is highly
responsive and it's a fine, stable product.

One to watch is Amaya (cross-platform, like Inkscape), which in its
latest (somewhat bleeding-edge) implementation offers SVG editing. The
drawback with Amaya is that its rendering falls well short of Adobe and
the major non-legacy browsers, although its developers are making great
strides.

It's a sadness to me that HTML-Kit is not available under Linux, to
which I am gradually transferring my allegiance. I'd be most interested
to hear from others about the various HTML/XML/SVG editors available on
that platform.

CPKS

[svg-developers] Hey you all. Just

2008-10-05 Thread tim.becker80
Hey you all. I just joined the group today.
I'm getting started with SVG and I've gotta figure manny things out.
I'm working on a project to bind SVG ANIMATION to a database and I'm a
new-be to all of this. My programming/scripting experience is very small.
Presently, I'm going through SVG Unleashed and I'm playing with the
source code that comes with it. So basically editing .svg files.
I'm TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH ENVIRONMENT TO DO SOME EDITING IN TO
GET SOME HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. I'm wondering if Firebug is a suitable
environment for this or not...?
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Tim.

Re: [svg-developers] Hey you all. Just

2008-10-05 Thread ddailey
I wish I had a good answer, so am contemplating having students do comparisons
of several as a class project.
Perhaps some of you have some ideas.

The ones I'm currently thinking of throwing into the mix for evaluation are:
Opera Dragonfly
Firefox/Firebug
Mozilla/SeaMonkey
HTMLKit
oXygen
notepad++
Aptana Studio
Nvu
TextPad
Eclipse
Inkscape (has XML mode)

Others?? What else is anyone using

Among the features that I'm interested evaluating:
Cost (free is best)
ease of learning (smaller environments are better / and moreso for student)
svg preview
html preview
tag completion
syntax highlighting
javascript syntax awareness
javascript debugging
html / svg DOM communication
compound document support (including object, embed and foreignObject)
support for both xhtml and html/quirk-y
inspection of dynamic DOM
multiple browser simulation
wysiwyg drawing pad
web based

Are there other features that author/developers consider to be valuable?

cheers
David
