I got a 2 pair copper and I am looking for a product to offer Ethernet
connectivity at speed of 4mbps or higher. Distance is about 1km and the copper
is in the same local loop.

Not sure about differences in countries, but here we use Adtran's TA-5000 with
the 838 at the CPE:

Hi,

I confirm. And depending on the line quality you can go at higher speed.

Here I use a pair of Zyxel P793 on a Swisscom MC2 (only one pair) of ~ 1km and
I reach 6,5Mbps.

Cheers,
Jerome

Hi,

You can use gSHDSL.bis modem like Zyxel P-793h or Thomson TG605s. You can
choose CPE/CO mode in the configuration.
On 2 pairs, you can reach 8MB approximately.

look here:
http://www.actelis.com/products/prod-ml620.php
or here:
http://www.flexdsl.ch/SHDSL_Orion2.html

we are using it in our own colocation/unbundling
pops in austria - this is really working fine and
delivers up to carrier class Ethernet

bandwith depends on the copper quality - but
at 1 km there should be more than 10 mbit on
two copper pairs possible.

I can also give you a contact with our dsl specialist
if you need deeper informations.

You could add

http://www.odcnms.org/

to the list, does pretty much what Richard is trying to do, too. That
is not to say that his effort is pointless, these tools all have some
drawbacks and if you have the time to write one that suits you, you
definitely should do it :)

May I suggest though that you provide a scriptable API to your tool,
whether you publish it or not. You won't like adding more than a dozen
devices and 100 IPs over a web interface (no, not even with an
iPhone ;)).

The iphone interface is a cool idea.

What exactly is documentation of installation? A notes filed or some
