Thanks to Matthias Herzog for pointing me in the right direction.
It seems that 2-3 months ago, AVM has released a new firmware for
the Fritz!Box which does (non configurable) rate limiting on ICMP
packets.

The worst about this is, that they seem to be looking at the
overall number of ICMP packets, not per sender or somethhing like
this.

By raising the ping interval in smokeping to 5 seconds, the problem
went away ...

cheers

Re: [swinog] Email forwarding and backscatter, any idea how to solve?

Forwarding to a sigle address would ideally be done with your mailserver
acting as a proxy, i.e. opening a smtp connection to the
final destination server and forwarding the status codes to the sender.
However you'll most certainly get in trouble if the recipient
mailserver is using SPF.
And as you said, forwarding to multiple addresses is a bit tricky...

Maybe you need to trade backscatter for mailbox storage: forward all
mails with the envelope from of a local mailbox of the user and have
that user check his mailbox at your place from time to time.

I'm afraid I don't see a solution without having either backscatters or
using local storage for the "bounces".

Cheers

Jean-Pierre

[swinog] Email forwarding and backscatter, any idea how to solve?

2013-04-26 Diskussionsfäden Benoit Panizzon
Hello World!

I am working on renewing our ISP email solution.
I'm focusing on minimizing any troubles while filtering spam etc. Eg, an email
either arrives at the recipient or is rejected during SMTP handshake.

Unfortunately some customers do forward their email addresses to other
addresses, this can be internal or external addresses and this can be multiple
addresses.

In some cases it seems nearly impossible to me to prevent backscatter if you
got email forwardings.

How do other ISP solve that problem? Just tell you customers you won't offer
email forwarding any more?

Mit freundlichen Grüssen

Benoit Panizzon
