The possibly mean to use any usual second-level domain name for their implementation of dyn-DNS updates. Not only subdomain like 'www'. Silly ad! Or they do register private TLDs, but propagate them only in their DNS servers. So everyone has to use their name servers to resolv those TLDs. - Dan ___ swinog mailing list swinog@lists.swinog.ch http://lists.swinog.ch/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/swinog

Hi Roger, > hi i read in the actually PC-Professionell an Adv.from Strato.de > privat user could register an own TLD > > original text: > DynDNS: machen sie ihren eigenen PC aus dem internet erreichbar, bei > strato sogar unter ihrer persoenlichen Top-Level-Domain > > an anyoning marketing joke or an inkomepetent writing ? This smells like incompetent writing. I guess what they want to say is: homepc.dyndns.org is not a "Top-Level-Domain" but myhomedomain.de is one. Because if you want to be reachable from the Internet you'd better not start with own TLDs. Which leads to the question whether myhomedomain.co.uk is a "Top-Level-Domain" for Strato or not? Anyway. "Solutions" like this existed for years. AlterNIC and OpenNIC, just to name two of these alternate namespaces. How do you explain to your grand-mother, she has to enter strange numbers in a hidden field somewhere in the depths of her computer, just to surf to http://www.hallo.oma/ ? But maybe we are wrong altogether and Strato bought ICANN..? =:-) CU, Venty -- Damit ich Euch immer in den Ohren liegen kann: http://www.semmel.ch/podcast Höret mein Audioblog! Re: [swinog] Private TLD ????
guys, dyndns was providing names within their own domains, technically speaking third-level names, like myhomepc.dyndns.com. Looks like now they provide the same services for any domain, like myhomepc.ch. Some stupid marketing guy called it TLD, and for many stupid home users (well, that's where most of the money comes from) will think the same: myowndomain.com IS for them a top-level domain :-) ___ swinog mailing list swinog@lists.swinog.ch http://lists.swinog.ch/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/swinog
