I have looked at it in the past. As an English speaker, I'm not sure how
interested I personally am in non-English texts (they may be the originals,
but they probably lack wide appeal). Ones like Liddell-Scott might be more
useful, but again I'm not sure.

Another collection I looked at was the MIT Classics collection (
http://classics.mit.edu/), which contains a number of public domain English
translations (and I checked with them a year and a half ago and they said to
the best of their knowledge the translations were completely public domain
and I could use them for whatever I wanted). Some of them relate history
that is referenced sometimes in Bible study, and I would sometimes like to
see the original than just accept the bite sized chunks I am given. Others
would be more used for (possibly reliable) background information.

[sword-devel] Catholic Versification - Prologue of Sirach, Lamentations

2011-06-17 Thread Mike Hart
Re: http://www.sacredbible.org/catholic/index.htm

I'm working on importing the Catholic Public Domain Bible. This version
includes 9 verses at the beginning of Sirach marked verses P:1 - P:9. There
are also 3 prologue verses at the beginning of Lamentations.

To properly set this up for Catholic versification, how should these verses
appear in the import format module key? Are they all part of $$$Sirach 0:0
or $$$Sirach 1:0 or does the AVN allow for $$$Sirach 0:1 - 0:9? or is P:1
correct?

The dictionaries are already available for Sword (beta repo, I believe),
excluding that which isn't public domain. They do need an update to TEI
P5, but the conversion isn't particularly trivial.

Additionally they have some impressive text parsing technology hidden
in their code (which is, according to their About, mainly in Java and
Perl) which either the library or front ends might leverage to
excellent effect.

[sword-devel] Puritan GenBooks?

2011-06-17 Thread Martin Denham
Are there any Sword GenBook modules planned or available by people like John
Owen, Jonathan Edwards, J C Ryle or other Puritans? I can't see any in the
normal repo.

Thanks

There is already a CPDV module, in the Crosswire Experimental repository.

Such books tend to happen when someone stumbles over material and wants to
create a book.

I did Baxter's Reformed Pastor a while back when I wrote an essay where I used
the text. I guess Baxter counts as a Puritan of sorts. It is in Xiphos'
repository.

I will probably come back to the subject when I have other more immediate
concerns resolved.

Hi Martin --

Any suggestions on what you'd like to see? Now that you've mentioned it,
Edwards' Religious Affections would be cool

I just moved it over to the av repo, along with most of the other experimental
modules that were only there because they use non-KJV v11ns.

If you really need to encode the CPDV for some reason, I recommend looking at
the CPDV module and doing the same thing. I expect it had the prologue in
Sirach 0, since non-numeric chapters and multiple verses in chapter 0 are both
illegal.
