But other than that, have recently repaired what used to be a 150' longwire and

A shame about Global 24: They actually were something worth talking about
on the list, but, alas, they either underestimated the amount of work (and

Hi -

Thanks, Mark, for the response.

Sending this in response to Paul Walker's comment earlier.

When this list was created, perhaps, what, 15 years ago (egad), its focus
was on programming content available via shortwave -- what was interesting
listening, new programs on air, programming reviews. Many "classic"
shortwave-related lists didn't care about content, so this list served a
unique purpose.

Conversely, the list wasn't designed to be a loggings or QSL list, because
there were (and are) many good examples of those already very popular. My
own personal favorite is the ODXA list.

NASWA's list is good as well, but one has to be a NASWA member to belong
there.

There are likely other good lists -- such as Glenn Hauser's DXLD list
-- but I am not as familiar with these other.

Over the years, as we all know, "rocking chair" - quality shortwave
listening, at least in most of North America, has significantly declined --
North America was one of the targets many broadcasters identified as not
being worth the investment in transmitter time, in part because we're online
so much, and because broadcasters felt (rightly or wrongly) we weren't a
priority target for them.

For that reason, posting traffic to this list has been very infrequent for
several years. For a while, we were using this list to post links / reviews
of content available via download / streaming / podcast, and also used this
list for discussing broadcaster strategies regarding delivery platform
choices -- i.e. shortwave vs. Internet vs.
smartphone app vs. local rebroadcast.

I also maintain a list that focuses on Internet-delivered radio, and again
focuses on content and technology (since QSLs really aren't that much of an
issue for Internet-delivered radio).

I've been happy to see Paul's enthusiasm and postings, just because such
enthusiasm hasn't been all that prevalent here recently!
However, I suggest, Paul, that you might get a more lively discussion going
over on the ODXA list or one of these others when it comes to signal ID,
QSLs, etc...

Any other questions? Let me know via e-mail (suggest you don't reply to the
entire list).

[Swprograms] Why does this list exist?

2015-05-20 Thread Richard Cuff
Hi -

Thanks, Mark, for the response.

Sending this in response to Paul Walker's comment earlier.

When this list was created, perhaps, what, 15 years ago (egad), its
focus was on programming content available via shortwave -- what was
interesting listening, new programs on air, programming reviews. Many
"classic" shortwave-related lists didn't care about content, so this
list served a unique purpose.

Conversely, the list wasn't designed to be a loggings or QSL list,
because there were (and are) many good examples of those already very
popular. My own personal favorite is the ODXA list.

NASWA's list is good as well, but one has to be a NASWA member to belong there.

There are likely other good lists -- such as Glenn Hauser's DXLD list
-- but I am not as familiar with these other.

Over the years, as we all know, "rocking chair" - quality shortwave
listening, at least in most of North America, has significantly
declined -- North America was one of the targets many broadcasters
identified as not being worth the investment in transmitter time, in
part because we're online so much, and because broadcasters felt
(rightly or wrongly) we weren't a priority target for them.

For that reason, posting traffic to this list has been very infrequent
for several years. For a while, we were using this list to post links
/ reviews of content available via download / streaming / podcast, and
also used this list for discussing broadcaster strategies regarding
delivery platform choices -- i.e. shortwave vs. Internet vs.
smartphone app vs. local rebroadcast.

I also maintain a list that focuses on Internet-delivered radio, and
again focuses on content and technology (since QSLs really aren't that
much of an issue for Internet-delivered radio).

I've been happy to see Paul's enthusiasm and postings, just because
such enthusiasm hasn't been all that prevalent here recently!
However, I suggest, Paul, that you might get a more lively discussion
going over on the ODXA list or one of these others when it comes to
signal ID, QSLs, etc...

Any other questions? Let me know via e-mail (suggest you don't reply
to the entire list).

Thanks -- Richard Cuff / list owner

[Swprograms] Another QSL card!

2015-05-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I'm up to over a dozen in about a month. I had primarily been an AM DX'er
for years and about 3 months ago, I switched almost entirely to SW Dxing.

I started writing for QSL's in about mid April and have already gotten over
a dozen

Another QSL card arrived in the mail, this one from China Radio
international for their 250,000 Watt broadcast on 9790khz from Cuba.

This broadcast on this frequency from this location is one of the
consistently strongest, steadiest signals I ever get on shortwave.
Sometimes audio is good, sometimes it's not.

Sorry guys, I tend to try to be sensitive to others and when someone

 I use that site, shortwaveschedule.com
but what I heard doesn't match or seemingly match RTM
Sarawak FM, which I've heard before, nothing else seems
 to fit the time schedule.

[Swprograms] NEW LOG...11850khz

2015-05-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, tentatively... but only one thing fits the schedule.

i believe I have Radio Veritas Asia from the Phillipines with 250kw on
11850khz.

Signal was poor to fair, about a 3 1/2 out of 10, audio was only barely
fair. There was a little interference and light to moderate fading. A
female was heard talking.

Here's an audio clip of what I heard:

This is a new logging.. in that I've heard Voice of Vietnam before, but
only on 12005 with 100kw from Wooferton, UK... Yet I logged what i'm pretty
sure is The Voice Of Vietnam on 12000khz with 100kw from Hanoi early Monday
morning.

May 20th, 2015 at 1055UTC/3:55am Pacific with a weak but steady signal,
about a 2 out of 10 with light fading. Heard music being played.

[Swprograms] CKZU 6160 Vancouver, BC, Canada

2015-05-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
This is not a new logging for me, but this is by far the strongest I've
ever heard CKZU 6160 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada here at my
location in Redding, California, USA.

And the signal was even strong before I started this recording!! CKZU is a
relay of CBC Radio One's CBU 690 Vancouver.
