Hmm, such remove/add events really should only appear if the USB devices
got unplugged and then replugged... Smells like a hw problem.

Do you see anything interesting in dmesg when this happens?

After rebooting the whole system, all consoles come up to gdm
properly.  Logging in and then logging out works correctly and returns
to the gdm greeter.  It only seems to fail after the system has been
used for a day or so.

Where can I start debugging why this is happening?
