2001-05-13 Thread Barbara & George Grenier

Nobody seems to have mentioned some fine marks from Eagle Rock, Ca on May 12th.
Tyree Washington ran a personal best of 44.28 giving him four of the top
five times in the world.
Jess Strutzel ran a US leading 1:46.61
John Godina had a double win of 20.83 in the shot and 65.86.
Seilala Sua had a double of 17.38 and 61.94

Both discus throws were under basically windless conditions.

Herein lies the problem with this whole issue.
Promoting the sport does not only include running.  We continually deride
those athletes do not do anything else except run.  Here is a chance to
employ these athletes for other causes, other forms of pr.  All the casual
fan gets is performance, here was a chance to give the people the athlete up
front and personal.
Require those with wild cards to do broadcast, clinics, public appearances,
things that define them as people.  Instead of fluff pieces here is the
chance to talk directly to these athletes.
That is what I am talking about.  Requiring them to participate is
thoughtless, and unimaginative.  That does not require a marketing degree,
all that requires is unchecked authority.

I do not believe that this statement is true. I believe in Connecticut that
they will accept a mark as a state record if the mark was set in a sanctioned
High School meet with five or more schools competing. However, it has
been a few years since I coached High School in CT...

Actually, it's not NJ that's enlightened, it's Ed.
His records are considered official by everybody in
the state (coaches, writers, athletes, state
officials), so if he says something is a record and he
lists it in the NJ Track Annual (published since 1966)
as a record, it IS a record.

t-and-f: UW Twilight Meet

2001-05-13 Thread MandSFitz
Here are a few highlights I saw last night
at this meet in Madison,WI.The weather was ideal.
65 and dropping to 55 with no wind.
Kathy Butler ran 15:14 for 5000m and got her
WC qualifier.Sarah Schwald and Suzy Hamilton
paced her through 1600m in about 4:46.Suzy dropped out
then and Sarah paced her through 2000m and stopped.
(Sarah had paced some of the UW women in the 1500
earlier--Jeanelle Deathredge ran well and won the 1500m
in about 4:16).Kathy ran alone for the final 3000m.Her splits
for kilometers were roughly:3:00,3:04,3:04,3:04,and 3:02.
A UW freshman named Dan Murray won the 800 in 1:48.
They are redshirting him this year.
The 1500 was a great race.Josh Spiker is another
freshman UW is redshirting. He ran about 24th in the World
CC Championships Junior race.He won this race last night
in 3:43.Troy Trygstad of Drake was 2nd in 3:44.The Downin
brothers paced it through in 58,1:58 and about 2:57.Neither
Downin was racing seriously,though.

Ok, we're getting to the root of the problem. There's what
we the track and field fan wants, and then there's the reality
of mass audiences. When Michael, Magic, and Larry were playing,
I watched the NBA; without them, I don't. Before Moss, Carter,
Smith, and Cunningham, I didn't watch the NFL; with them, I make
sure to catch the Vikes. I grew up a Big Red Machine fan;after
that and until the Yanks, I quit watching baseball. Millions
tune in to watch some kid knock a ball around a nice park: ok, so
pre-Tiger, the golf audience was big - now it's _huge_.
If he's in the tournament.

Garry and others tell us that the millions of recreational
runners in the US are not the target audience. Many on this
list believe the target audience is that composed of the 3000
members of this list. Still others think it is the subset of this
list that wants to sit on their butts and compute statistics.
NBC thinks the target is soccer moms
who will watch if only the particpants have suffered life
tragedies. The search for the true audience goes on...

t-and-f: Texas UIL State HS Meet/Saturday Highlights

2001-05-13 Thread CHRIS KUYKENDALL

Saturday competition at the Texas UIL state high school meet
continued to exhibit strong performances:

(1) in class 3A; and
(2) by the Class of 2002.

For starters, junior Ychlindria Spears of 3A Luling won two more
events, the 100 (11.88) and 200 (24.16), to bring her total to four.
I failed to get wind readings. Her 21-03 1/4 long jump from Friday
was wind-aided, at +2.7 mps. The 44-02 1/4 national high school
record in the triple jump was +0.something. The sheet on the
posting board was covered up at the edge, and I didn't get the
decimal digit. In yesterday's post I had speculated it to be more
like +1.5.

The girls' triple jump generally was a strong event at the UIL. On
Friday, Latoya Phelps of Greenville won the 4A title at 42-8 1/4
(+0.9 mps). On Saturday, Shametra Boykins of Karnack went
40-10 1/2 in 1A (-0.3 mps), and Chaytan Hill of Converse Judson
and Erica McLain of Plano East went 41-1 1/4 and 40-10 3/4,
respectively, in 5A. I didn't get the 5A wind readings.

But back to 3A, and the meet's standout juniors. In the early
afternoon competition, DaBryan Blanton of Forney ran 10.30
(+1.7 mps) to win the 3A 100, and returned about eighty minutes
later for a 20.37 (+1.6 mps) win in the 3A 200. Neither race was
close. Jack Shepard pointed out that the half-lapper was the
second fastest 200 ever run by a non-senior U.S. high schooler,
the standard being a 20.28 by Roy Martin of Dallas Roosevelt
as a junior in 1984. Blanton's sprint marks were both the fastest
from all five classes, although Edorian McCullough of North
Garland came close in the 5A 100 with a winning 10.31 (+1.7
mps).

Heston King of Lubbock Monterey won the 5A high jump at 7-0,
defeating two 7-0 jumpers from the regionals, who couldn't get
that high again, and runnerup Rashad Turner of Marshall who
required three tries each at 6-6, 6-8, and 6-10. Brenham junior
Andre Manson cleared 7-0 likewise to win the 4A title on Friday,
but the meet's best height came early on Friday with a 7-0 1/4
by junior Jason Hill of Quanah in 2A.

Senior Stephen Brown of Houston Nimitz had the best triple jump
on the boys' side, going 51-6 1/4 (+0.5 mps) in 5A. The top long
jumper was senior Howard Jackson of Freeport Brazosport in 4A
on Friday, a 25-6. (+1.9 mps).

Senior Jonathan Reeves of Sugar Land Austin lost in the 5A discus
throw, but came back with a strong shot put series: 63-2 1/4, 67-6,
foul, 65-3, a huge 68-10 1/2 that was the winner, and a closing
66-5 1/4. T&FN ranked him #3 nationally last year in the high
school shot.

The 5A running events got started at 6 p.m. under nice weather,
the wind having reversed direction from Friday, blowing out of the
north. Things opened with Houston Lamar nosing out Galveston
Ball in the girls' 4x100, 45.84 to 45.86. Then, two meet records--
one 20 years old and the other 34 years old--fell in the 800 in the
space of about twelve minutes. In the girls' event, Mindy Sullivan
of Lubbock Coronado, with a regional qualifier of 2:10.42, opened
with a lap of 61.9. "Too fast," I thought out loud. Slowing, she
began giving away the gap she had opened behind her at about
550-650 meters. Kelly Cordell of Houston Spring Branch Memorial
caught and passed her in the homestretch, but just when Cordell
seemed poised to pull away, it didn't happen. Sullivan stuck tough,
yanked back on the invisible string, regained to within about six
inches, then found a little extra nearing the wire to edge back in
front and win in 2:08.38 to 2:08.40 for Cordell. A very gutsy run.
The old UIL meet record was set in 1981 by Margarita Salinas of
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, who was in attendance at today's race.

UIL fans will look forward to a potential Sullivan-Cordell rematch
next year. They're both juniors, according to Texas Track & Field
News. (Referred to at: http://www.texastrack.com/ttfn.htm.)

In the boys' 800, senior Jonathan Johnson had the top T&FN
national high school ranking last year. He went out in 52.3, and
finished in 1:48.21 to shatter the 1:49.2 set by Dave Morton of
Houston Spring Branch Memorial in 1967 and tied by Jeremy
Stallings of Stanton in 1993. Johnson is headed to Texas Tech.
Think of Gebrselassie, but a little taller and with a somewhat
stronger build partway to a football fullback, topped by more
hair than Geb, kind of an initial investment in an Afro but less
than one sees on those 1970s basketball players in old TV
footage.

The 800 was Johnson's second most impressive race of the day.

Twins Diana and Julie Pickler of Garland Rowlett went 1-2 in the
100 hurdles, 13.74 (the best girls' time of the meet) and 13.97.
The announcer during the award ceremony informed the crowd
that Diana also was the first to be born, by a four-minute margin.
They will be seniors in 2002. The wind in their race was +1.9 mps.
It was +1.7 mps for the boys' 5A 110 hurdles, won by senior
LeChance Kimble of Sugar Land Willowridge in 13.74.
