Two other contributing factors that have been mentioned before:

1. Other sports (soccer, triathlon) pulling away more potential distance runners they
did twenty years ago; and

2. The USA birth rate bottomed out in the mid-1970's meaning there are fewer adults in
their mid to late twenties these days. Fortunately, the birth rate has improved since
then which may be a contributing factor to recent improvements in high school
performances in our sport.

Subject: Re: t-and-f: marathon qualifiers

The problem is really quite simple, and it is 3-fold:

1. The US "elite" runners are not running nearly as hard/long as they were
20-30 years ago. This is due in part to high school and college coaches
adopting the high quality/low quantity approach. Three runners, three vast
improvements in mileage, three of the best US marathoners we have had
recently: Joe Lemay drops a 2:13 after upping to 140-150, David Morris drops
a 2:09 after going to Japan and uppping to 150ish, Josh Cox qualifies for
2000 Trials after upping to 100+ then drops to 2:13 after upping even
further to the 130-150 range. 120 a week not working? Try 140. That not
working? Try 160. Fact is there were more US "elite" runners 20-30 years ago
running upwards of 150 or more a week.

2. US "elites" wait too long to try the marathon. Todd Williams best
marathon days were back in '95-'96. We have three runners capable of sub
2:10-2:11, but they are busy running 10ks on the track. The best US runners
are too busy running 5ks and 10ks to worry about the marathons. 20-30 years
ago a lot of the best US marathoners could hold their own on the track and
the not-so-speedy made up the 2nd tier running 2:15s. Today, for the most
part, the not-so-speedy runners make up the 1st tier.

3. Too much other stuff to worry about. Forget about the few examples of
runners running 2:10 while working 50 hours a week. If you want to give
yourself the best chance to excel in running then you can't be worn out from
working 50 hours a week. Working 20-30 hours a week gives you a little cash
plus more than enough time to put in the twice daily 10 mile runs that you
need. A lot of the best college runners quit running seriously after college
so they can pursue a job related to their degree.

All of these problems can be solved. The developmental groups (Hansons,
Brownstone, Fila, ect) have started the ball rolling. Now a young runner has
somewhere to go. Some, like Brownstone, have performance levels with varying
perks. It's all a matter of finding young people willing to do whatever it
takes, run farther and faster, and do the things necessary to succeed. Once
that happens then US distance running will be fine.

t-and-f: A diffferentkind of marathon story

2001-11-09 Thread Ed Grant

Netters:
Just thought this might counter the bad taste left by the latest
version of Rosie Ruiz and also give another angle on what makes a good
marathon runner.

There was once in NJ a runner named Cliff Whitehead. In HS--and he
went to one of the top CC schools in the nation, Christian brothers
Academy---he was last in every race and a decided last. It wasn't much
better in college.

Most runners would have thankfully retired at this point, but Coiff
was made of sterner stuff. Not built at all for a marathon runner, by modern
standards, he neverheless turned to that event and, by sheer persistance,
turned himself into a fine runner of what could be called the "second rank."
never challenging for national honors, but winning and placing regularly in
many racesa and eventually getting his time down to the 2:20 level. It
reallty seemed at times that he was running at full speed for the entire 26
miles plus.

Certainly, if Cliff could accomplishg this with what obviously were
meager natural talents, runners more gifted can accomplish more than we are
seeing on the roads today,.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

USATF welcomes athletes' petition for EPO testing

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field (USATF) on Friday welcomed a petition from
18 of the United States' top women's distance runners calling for more
frequent and stringent Erythropoietin (EPO) testing.

The petition was sent by U.S. athletes on November 7 to the International
Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the World Anti-Doping Agency
(WADA), the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and USATF.

The petition states that it was sent "in hopes of raising the integrity of
our sport and promoting a truly drug-free athletic environment. We recognize
the recent efforts of USATF to support Erythropoietin (EPO) testing both in
and out of competition. … The acknowledgment of athletes using illegal drugs
such as EPO and other performance enhancing drugs must be met with effective
drug testing procedures to combat their use."

On October 25, USATF issued a formal request to USADA, WADA and the IAAF to
have effective EPO testing performed at U.S. domestic championship events at
all distances 800 meters and longer, as well as out of competition. That
request came seven months after USATF made a written request to WADA on March
7 to have EPO testing conducted at all major marathons worldwide. USADA, WADA
and the IAAF conduct all drug testing of U.S. track and field athletes and
adjudication of doping cases, domestically and internationally.

"We are proud to have our very best endurance athletes be at the forefront of
the fight against EPO use," said USATF CEO Craig Masback. "We have always
believed that eradicating EPO from our sport will especially benefit American
athletes."

Signatories of the petition were Amy Rudolph, Deena Drossin, Jennifer Rhines,
Suzy Favor Hamilton, Marla Runyan, Libbie Hickman, Regina Jacobs, Hazel
Clark, Jearl Miles-Clark, Milena Glusac, Leah Daniel, Elva Dryer, Shayne
Culpepper, Sarah Schwald, Rachel Sauder, Colleen De Reuck, Anne Marie Lauck
and Joetta Clark Diggs.

Frankly, living in the Northwest from where this numbnut originates is a shame and embarrasment to all who get it done honestly here inWashington.  I know when I first saw NY results I was quite surprised to someone from Washington who did that well.  Especially he has been nowhere in local results, etc.,
I know my eyes will be open for this fruitcake so I can share with him a little piece of my mind.  Amazing.

2001-11-09 Thread Wayne T. Armbrust

I hope that Franklin is criminally prosecuted for fraud by the NY Marathon
people and others where he collected or attempted to collect prize money, and
also suspended (or expelled) from the sport of Athletics by USA Track & Field
under provisions of Articles 18 & 19 of the Bylaws and Regulation 11 of the
Operating Regulations. The NYRR Club should initiate these actions
immediately to preserve the integrity of the sport.
