t-and-f: Webb at Mt. SAC

2002-04-11 Thread Ssd

To answer all of the mail I am getting, let me just say that Alan Webb will
run on Sat night at SAC in a very hot college race.  I will detail it later;
no time right now. His coach asked specifically for this race which, of
course, I was happy to accommodate. It should be quite good. Most of the
Michigan squad is coming, as they normally do. Please, no more e-mailsI
can't answer them all right now. Thanks for your understanding.

t-and-f: Relay bulges

2002-04-11 Thread P N Heidenstrom

To the many members of this list who must
coach 4*100m relay teams: My question is, do
you have a standard bulge, or an initial trial bulge which
you then vary to suit the runners in practice? If so, what
is the distance of the bulge?

"Bulge" is used here to mean the distance (measured
along the lane of your relay team) by which the outgoing
partner in a baton handover starts ahead of the incoming
partner so that both (hopefully) reach the chosen handover
point together.

I would like to know as many different choices of bulge as
possible, or even that you don't direct the runners but let
them work out their own bulges in fear and trembling.

If there are any replies, a summary of them will be posted
later, or individual summaries will be sent to respondents.
Please reply direct to me, not to the list.

P N Heidenstrom

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

USATF announces 2002 Outdoor Golden Spike Tour

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field’s 2002 Outdoor Golden Spike Tour (GST) will
feature three IAAF Grand Prix events, including the most prestigious
invitational meets in the country, as America’s best athletes compete in
Oregon and California.

The Golden Spike Tour, announced Thursday by USA Track & Field (USATF),
begins May 18 with the adidas Oregon Track Classic in Portland, Oregon. It
continues May 26 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, and on June 8
moves to the U.S. Open in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford
University.

The final stop returns the Tour to Stanford for the 2002 USA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships, held June 21-23 at Cobb Track & Angell Field. It was at
the Stanford GST stop in 2001 that fans had to be turned away when the crowd
quickly swelled to standing-room only.

As a prelude to the Golden Spike Tour, the elite USATF outdoor season kicks
off on April 27 with USA vs. The World, Presented by Verizon, a special
event within the Penn Relays that pits Team USA’s top talent against relay
teams from Russia, Germany, Jamaica, Great Britain and Poland. All of the
United States’ top international stars are slated to compete in USATF meets
in 2002.

“It is a testament to the growth of the Golden Spike Tour that for the first
time, all three invitational events on the Tour are IAAF sanctioned,” said
USATF President Bill Roe “Golden Spike Tour meets are recognized by the IAAF
as being among the best in the world.”

“Track and field fans have shown their support for the Tour over the last
three years to help build our success,” added USATF CEO Craig Masback. “With
California and Oregon widely considered to be the hotbeds of outdoor track
and field in the United States, we expect that trend of growth to continue
in 2002.”

The adidas Oregon Track Classic has IAAF Grand Prix II status, while the
Prefontaine Classic - the premiere meet of the U.S. outdoor circuit - and
the U.S. Open both are Grand Prix I meets.

The USA Outdoor Championships also will feature the top U.S. junior athletes
competing virtually alongside their world-class counterparts. The USA Junior
National Championships, part of the Verizon Youth Series, will be held
during the morning sessions on June 21 and 22 at Stanford, with the elite
athletes taking the track in the afternoon.

The USA Multi-Event Championships - heptathlon and decathlon competitions -
will be held June 19 and 20 in Berkeley, Calif, with the junior multi events
being held June 18 and 19 at Berkeley.

Now in its fourth year, the Golden Spike Tour provides America’s best
athletes the opportunity to compete in the United States and earn
substantial prize money in front of a nationally televised audience. In
2001, TV ratings rose as much as 35 percent for individual broadcasts.

The 2002 Golden Spike Tour will be broadcast nationally on ESPN, ESPN2 and
CBS (see below for broadcast schedule).

Sponsors of the 2002 Outdoor Golden Spike Tour are Verizon, Visa and SoBe
Sports System, with additional support from Nike, Xerox and General Motors.

t-and-f: Experience with Astroplay surface as landing area for discus/javelin?

2002-04-11 Thread Steve Vaitones

A high school in Massachusetts is putting in a new track & field
complex. It's in an urban area with little room for fields despite high
demand for fields from all sports.

It was proposed to put in an "Astroplay" synthetic field by Southwest
Industries. This is the material that looks like real grass (vs astroturf
rugs) with a several inch rubber-pellet base surrounding the "blades" of
grass. This is installed over dirt covered with some sort of rubber
membrane material, not over an asphalt or concrete base. Javelin and
discus can be thrown on the surface.

The company will give a warranty of seven (?) years, but says that that's
only if throwing javelins is limited to meets; for practice, they would
accept rubber tipped implements.
A second nearby high school already has such a surface, were told they can
throw 'real' javelins on it but were recommended to throw rubber tipped
implements.

Does anyone have experience with this surface as a landing area, with the
durability, with safety (bouncing discus, sliding javs, officiating).
Also, how about this surface as an approach (vs track material).

t-and-f: A couple of things

2002-04-11 Thread Ed Grant

Netters:

1) The state of 800M running in the U.S. is, as the latest issue of
Track and Field News notes, not exactly a promising one., An event which the
U.S. once dominated with Olympic champions from 1936 through 1956 has become
almost an embarrasment with no on advancing to the finals in Sydney.

Historically, most of our top 800M runners have been athletes who
also starred in the 400. John Woodruff, Mal Whitfield and Tom Courtney, who
put that string together, all fit that description. So did our most talented
(if not most successful) wunner of recent years, Mark Everett.

We have an abundance, some would say a superfluity of 400M runners
today. It puzzles me why some of these runners do not make a real effort at
the 800.

2) A letter to the editor in the same issue of T&F News bemoans the
presence of the 600Y run in a major indoor conference meet (rather than the
500M or 600M) I would say, bully for them---the other two diatances have had
their chance and have totally failed to gain any or the charisma once
associated with the 600Y race. (Maybe that's one reason why there was no
500M/600M at the Millrose Games this year) One of the stupidest moves in the
history of the sport was discarding the two classic indoor disrances of 600Y
and 1000Y in the rush to be metrically correct.

3) I say bully also (I/ve been reading the biographies of Theodore
Roosevelt recently) to Alan Webb for his choice of a target this summer. I
have always gone along with the Biblical notion that there is a proper time
for everything and Webb is so correct when he says that this is his last
chance for a major international junior title---so why not take it.

Past winners of World Junior 1500/5000/10,000. Usual mixed bag of some who
went on to prominence and some who faded out of sight. (2000 omitted since
too early to tell).

So Alan Webb said he will forego US Senior Nationals this year to
concentrate on World Juniors. I was wondering if anyone had a list of lets
say the last 10-15 years of Junior Champs in the 1500 and 5k. I would be
interested in seeing how many WJ winners in these events became World
(Senior) Champs. If I recall, Ngeny, Gebreselassie, El G were all world
junior champions... of course, so was the great Julius Achon...

Kind of ruins the party line on Geb's attempt but I guess this time he REALLY means

see how people like David Monti and Paul Christman will handle it. My personal
position is that I can now proudly say that I have a faster debut than Geb.
