Tommy Skipper set a new Oregon HS record at 17-7
1/2. He had a great attempt at a new high school record 18-3.
Since he is just a junior, it may have a good shot at it.

In the wake of recent developments, one would think that Justin Gatlin might come up
with a nickname other than "juice" (no matter how long he has had it or how well it
plays off his real name). It was rather disconcerting in the stands to see a "juice"
to-shirt and hear people chanting "juice-juice."

Sagan out into the next lane as she tried to pass. Again, there was general
unanimity that it was a nasty foul that couldn't go unpunished, but somehow
it seems the flag got swallowed.

It looked to me as if Nilsson moved out slightly as she was beginning her
kick, at the same time Sagan began hers.

For what it's worth, Sagan herself described it as "unintentional" and went
on to say, "Lena would have got me anyway."

Texas, Indiana and Ohio State have put in bids for 2004. I'm hoping for
Ohio State and the new Jesse Owens Stadium. Terrific facility, AND, most
importantly, within driving distance for me.

I just want to see that men's 4x4 finish. The first five runners all
within .67 of each other? Wow. I wish I could have been there this
year. I swear, the next time the NCAAs are in Texas or an adjacent
state (which I assume would be limited to Arkansas or Louisiana), I'm
definitely going. It was pretty exciting just following those team
races online.

And speaking of holding them in Texas, if anybody from UT is reading
this, please make a bid for it! UT has such a nice stadium now, one
that's definitely worthy.

It's going to be very interesting to watch (assuming the events are part of the

t-and-f: NJ Track...

2002-06-02 Thread LOVE91397

Listers,

I think NJ HS Track & Field should consider in the off season the way they
conduct a state championship series.
New Jersey is split into four groups (1,2,3,4) and two parochial groups (a&b)
depending on the population of your school.

The championships for all groups (including the parochial) should be held at
the same site. Right now, the group meets and parochial are held at different
sites.

I'm still trying to rationalize why the Group 1, 2,3,4 schools conduct a two
day meet (which allows athletes to triple and quad for points) while the
parochial schools have a one day affair which allows for no such running.

Yesterday was very windy in NJ, and depending where you ran, a 25.2 female
200m runner miraculously became a 24.44 runner, and a 24.3 200m runner turned
into a 25.49 runner. I was at a youth meet, and in 20 minutes, a 13-14 girl's
prelim ( places 1thru 3) went from 13.76, 14.64, 16.18 (into a blistering
wind) to a final of 12.39, 13.01, 14.64 (wind switched).

This poses a problem for the all-groups meet (which is a ridiculous, 1/2 day
affair held on a Wednesday night). A person who was top 3 in the state the
entire year may very well be relegated to an unseeded heat because of the
wind. The 200m is run final on time at the all-groups (instead of having a
qualifier on one day and the final on the next)

I always felt that an athlete's consistancy in an event should prevail over
the "one shot deal" mentality of track & field. Performance Lists are kept
all year and an athlete should be able to use his/her best performance for
seeding at a state championships (if there is no trial and final).
