Re: t-and-f: Guest fails drugs test
Ah to live in the good ol' U S of A. there would be a few different outcomes. 1. The kid would likely be able to compete. 2. He would likely get off. 3. We would probably never hear about it. Instead, the Canadian list gets to throw this stuff around at each other: for you to recklessly call him stupid or a cheat in my opinion is totally classless on your part. But then again I do not know you and this trait may be part of your character in all matters of life. I thought we were too polite to say that sort of thing about each other. Should be an interesting day up here. Regards, Martin Paul V. Tucknott wrote: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/commonwealthgames2002/hi/other_sports/triathlon /newsid_2152000/2152895.stm Canadian triathlete Kelly Guest has been sent home from the Commonwealth Games after testing positive for the banned substance nandrolone. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) said the test was taken at the ITU Triathlon World Cup event on 14 July in Edmonton. Guest said he has been taking at least six food supplements and believes that could be the source of the drug. Most of the things I'm taking are what anyone would take to be healthy - vitamin C and Vitamin E, Guest said. The athlete born in London, Ontario - ranked 91st in the world - must still undergo a B test to confirm that traces of the stimulant are present in his body. The only people who can have some idea of what it feels like are my team-mates, the coaching staff and my family. All these people know what sport means to me and anyone who knows me, knows that I believe there is no place in sport for drugs. Canada triathlon high performance director Paul Regensburg said: Kelly has requested that his B sample be tested and they are going to do that this weekend. Triathlon team president Bill Hallett has pledged to support Kelly, through what he called a difficult time, but stressed the team's anti-drugs stance. Asked how he had learnt the shock news of his positive test, Guest replied: I had just gone for a run and when I got back to the Games Village Paul (Regensburg) took me aside and told me I had tested positive. Baffling How did I feel? I don't think that's a question that needs to be answered. It's a lot to take in, in a very short space of time. Guest's coach Lance Watson said the result of the drugs test was baffling and questioned whether there might have been any cross-contamination in the sample. It's a trace amount (of nandrolone) in his system rather than a gross performance-enhancing amount that some athletes have had in the past, Watson said. It seems like it's the little guys who get caught using a cough syrup, while the professionals (drug cheats) get away with it. It's always someone like Kelly who gets hung out to dry and his national federation is standing by him 100%. The athlete was last tested almost a year ago at the Canadian national championships.

t-and-f: Tourova breaks women's 3000 meter steeplechase record
Agence France-Presse GDANSK (July 27, 2002 2:34 p.m. EDT) - Alesia Tourova of Belarus has established a new 3000m women's steeplechase world record, posting a time of 9 minutes, 16.51 seconds at the Gdansk athletics meet here on Saturday. http://sportserver.com/track_field/story/480371p-3835431c.html
Re: t-and-f: Tourova breaks women's 3000 meter steeplechase record
Has anyone figured a conversion between men's and women's steeplechase? How much slower would a Tourova be over the higher men's barriors? Or a man faster over the lower? 10 seconds? 20? more or is it a function of hurdling ability or the athlete's height? How would that be figured since no one runs both events? I usually think that a man's steeple time would be about 40 seconds slower than his flat 3 km but it must be less for women? Is Tourova 8:36 in a flat 3 km? Tom - Original Message - From: Michael J. Can't help on the conversions, but Turova is 5-10 3/4 and has run 8:32.89 for 3000. She also has the fastest time in the world this year in the 1500 (She beat Jacobs in Monaco-4:01.01 to 4:01.02). t-and-f: USATF Release: Old records thrown out at Junior Olympics
Contact:Joe Hughes USA Track Field (317) 261-0500 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.usatf.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 27, 2002 Old records thrown out at Junior Olympics OMAHA- National record-setting performances in the throwing events were a common theme Saturday at the Junior Olympics. World Youth silver medalist (2001) Michelle Carter broke the young womens national record in the shot put. Carter threw 51 feet, 1.75 inches, breaking the previous record by sixteen inches and beating the competition by over six feet. It was my goal to get the record, Carter said. I always try to enjoy myself and have fun. Jenny Svoboda of Howells, Neb. broke the youth girls Junior Olympic shot put record with a launch of 15.86/52-0.5. Svoboda won the Junior Olympic competition by over six feet and missed the youth girls national record by only 0.75 inches. Christopher Woods of Covington, Ga. broke the intermediate boys 800m national record with a time of 1:52.78. Woods battled Michael Haddan of Irvine, Calif. the entire way, fighting off Haddan on the home stretch and dashing his hopes of a 1500m/800m double win. Haddan, who finished in 1:52.90, will run the 1500m Sunday. Last years intermediate 4x800m champions moved up to the young mens division this year, yet still placed first. The Lynx Elite Athletics team of Michael Grant, Russell Brown, William Seidel and Harry Norton won with a time of 7:49.82. After winning the discus on Friday, Abby Emsick of Council Bluffs, Iowa returned to competition Saturday, winning the young womens javelin throw with a toss of 39.47m/129-6. At first I wasnt throwing well, Emsick said. I thought first place was out of my reach. But my last throw was my PR. Its nice to finish at home, Emsick said about her last competition as a Junior Olympian, across the Missouri River from her hometown. Emsick also placed third in the shot put Saturday. High School 400mH record holder Kenneth Ferguson of Detroit, Mich. ran 13.76 in the young mens 110m hurdles preliminaries. Fergusons time from the fourth heat was the fastest qualifying time, barely topping 2002 Youth Athletics 400m hurdles and 110m hurdles champion Kerron Clements 13.77 in the first heat. Ferguson and Clement will face off in the 110mH and 400mH finals on Sunday. Six teams clocked times under 41 seconds in the young mens 4x100m trials, paving the way for a potentially record-breaking final on Sunday. Track Houston TC led the qualifiers in 40.06. The national record currently stands at 39.73. For full results and live webcast of the Junior Olympics, go to the USA Track Field website at www.usatf.org. ###
